pg03 REFLECTIONS
Serving a Mighty God
When Kin Yew and Elaine Teng stepped into
Hope Church in January 2007, they were
passionate Christians with a hunger to serve
God. Three years on, the dedicated couple are
leading various ministries and helping others
develop a passion for God and His work. Karen
Tong discovers what keeps their fire for God
burning bright.
“We do not believe in being pew warmers,” Kin Yew Teng
says, “we believe in being part of the body of Christ and
serving God in any capacity.”

This is the attitude Kin Yew and Elaine Teng have had since
they became Christians more than 20 years ago. And so it
was when they first arrived at Hope Church – the couple,
with their two young daughters, were ready to serve in any
way they could.

Kin Yew started out in the ushering ministry, greeting

people as they arrived for Sunday church services and
making newcomers feel welcome. Elaine began teaching at
HopeKids, including her own girls, and helping the children
at Hope Church grow in their relationship with God.

While they continued to grow in their Christian faith through

the Church’s discipleship program, Kin Yew and Elaine
also found themselves growing in their capacity and desire
to serve God. “What is most important is keeping a close
relationship with God, reminding ourselves why we are
serving, who we are serving and staying focused,” Kin Yew
says. Elaine adds, “When we taste and know that God is
good, we will want to love and serve Him more.”

Kin Yew became involved in the CARE ministry, ensuring

that new Christians are taken care of and church members
are growing spiritually. Developing her expertise in working
with children, Elaine now organises Upbeat, a school
holiday program for Primary and High School students.
pg04 YOU&ME
“It is also wonderful that the Pastors and leaders have
set great examples in serving God,” Elaine says. “Do you
know that Ps Aileen used to sweep the floor in church? Do
you know that Aunty Grace cleans the toilets?” she asks.

Kin Yew and Elaine also head up the church’s facilities

team – a group of people who ensure Hope Church’s
building is functioning at its best at all times. During the
team’s ‘Working Saturdays’, Elaine has been encouraged
to see the team – she affectionately calls them ‘the boys’
– put in their time and effort to help out at the Church,
when they could have been somewhere else. “The boys
gave up quite a few of their precious Saturdays and public
holidays,” Elaine says.

Kin Yew says that he always encourages the team to give

their best to God, “We constantly remind ourselves that
God has given us His best and that we are serving the
King of Kings, and we also try to install that in those that
we serve with.” And they also always remember to have
fun while they are serving God. “In our meetings we had
lots of fun laughing at each other’s ideas about how to
solve some of the problems in facility,” Elaine says.

Just as the Pastors and leaders have encouraged them

and motivated them to serve God, Kin Yew and Elaine
are also passing on their passion to the people who work
with them. Kin Yew says that sharing a clear vision for
the team was important, “There is so much to do and so
few workers so having a clear vision help us to focus and
encourage others to serve.” Once the team catches the
vision, Elaine adds, the motivation and enthusiasm will
follow.

Valuing team members and encouraging team spirit

is also important in keeping passionate about serving
God. After a busy year, Kin Yew and Elaine organised a
barbecue to thank all the people who have helped in the
facilities ministry and honour their work. “We hope to build
a team spirit and encourage each other,” Elaine says, “and
of course, in Hope Church, eating together always helps
to forge a stronger bond of love.”

Passion
for praise
Learning to play a musical
instrument helps children
express their passion for
praise. Hope Mission Centre’s
School of Music gives people
the opportunity to learn how to
play a musical instrument and
develop their talents.
Dr Allison Tong asks three kids what they’ve been
learning at the School of Music.

What instrument have you been learning to play

and why did you choose it?

“I chose the guitar because I like the sound of it and

because it’s a stringed instrument and I like stringed
instruments.” Jasmine, Year 5

“I chose the drums because its one of my cousin’s

favourite instrument. It’s nice and loud and you get
to move your arms in different hits, beats, and stuff
like that. I even got my own drum set for Christmas.”
Joseph, Year 4

“I chose the keyboard. I wanted to learn drums but my

mum said to learn another instruments, and so I went
with my mum’s idea. I like the keyboard because they
produce nice songs.” Rosh, Year 4

What have you learnt in the HMC Music School?

“I have learnt notes, scales and strumming patterns.

I’ve learnt to play, ‘I Could Sing of Your Love Forever’,
and I’m just starting to learn, ‘God of Wonders,’ and
‘Jesus, Lover of my Soul’.” Jasmine, Year 5

“I’ve been learning about how to do all the straight

beats, single strokes, double strokes. I’ve learnt
songs, how to hold the sticks.” Joseph, Year 4

“I have been learning scales, chords and songs. I can

play ‘God is So Good’ and ‘I Could Sing of Your Love
Forever’, and the intro of ‘Beautiful One’.” Rosh, Year
4

What are your favourite praise and worship

songs?

“My favourite songs are, ‘Lord of Lords’, ‘Salvation

is Here’, ‘Mighty to Save’, and ‘One Way’.” Jasmine,
Year 5

“‘Mighty to Save’, ‘Deeply in Love’, ‘Salvation is Here’,

and ‘Tell the World’.” Joseph, Year 4

“’Break Free’ and ‘Salvation is Here’.” Rosh, Year 4
