Goals
Students will display knowledge of the basics of elements and principles of
design.
Students will be able to evaluate the use of elements and principles of design.
Students will be able to navigate through an online gaming database applying the
elements and principles of interior design.
Objectives
Objective 1: Describe the elements and principles of design and the effects that can be
created with each.
Objective 2: Apply the elements and principles of design are used in the design of a
room.
Objective 3: Create a living space applying elements and principles of design through
an online interactive interior design game.
Learner Characteristics:
The groups of learners are 9th graders at H.E. McCracken Middle School in Bluffton,
South Carolina, and make up six individual FACS and Design 1 classes. The students
range in ages from 14 to 17 with the most common age being age 15. There are 142
students total including 60 girls and 82 boys. These classes are comprised of 31 African
Americans, 5 Asian, 63 Caucasians, and 43 Hispanic. Six of the students have been
identified as having an IEP (Individual Education Plan). There are seven students with a
504 Student Accommodation Plan. There are four students with a BIP (Behavior

Johnson & Howard: Page 3

Intervention Plan). Twenty-nine students are being served by the ESOL (English
Speakers of Other Languages) program and range from levels 1 to 5.
To gather the above mentioned information about the groups of learners, there were
several methods used. To start, the students information that is logged into
PowerSchool was reviewed. This database was used to gather student gender, race
and birthdates. Student files from the guidance office were used to determine IEPs,
504s and BIPs. Information for ESOL students was gathered from the lead ESOL
teacher.
Prerequisite skill & knowledge:

Be able to navigate software databases

Be able to access the internet

Be able to print image

Content and Instructional Strategies:

Lesson 1: Introducing the Elements and Principles of Design
Objective 1: Describe the elements and principles of design and the effects that each
creates.
Motivational Strategy: Ask the students Have you ever thought about redesign your
bedroom? Ask the students to think about how an online game could help them design
a room.
Initial Presentation: Help the class identify the elements and principles of design through
a teacher generated Prezi.
Activity: In a group discussion, instruct the students to start an online discuss wall on
TodaysMeet circulating the topic of the goal and purpose of elements and principles of
design in reference to interior design. Next, while working individually, ask the students
to explain the purpose of elements and principles of design in reference to interior
design. Instruct the students to post one response to the question on the class Padlet
wall and to comment on another students post.
Lesson 2: Applying the Elements and Principles of Interior Design

Johnson & Howard: Page 4

Objective 2: Apply the elements and principles of design are used in the design of a
room.
Motivational Strategy: Ask the students Have you ever thought about being an interior
designer? Explain to the students how and interior designer uses the elements and
principles of design when thinking of ideas for a room.
Initial Presentation: Students will assume the role of interior designer for this lesson.
Students will have printed examples of rooms displaying the elements and principles of
design or the lack of thereof.
Activity: Students will work as a group critiquing each room. Each group will give a mini
presentation to the class to express their thoughts on each room. Individually, students
will research rooms online and find examples of how the elements and principles are
used well and poorly. Each example will be posted on a class Padlet wall.
Lesson 3: Elements and Principles of Interior Design through Online Gaming
Objective 3: Create a living space applying elements and principles of design through
an online interactive interior design game.
Motivational Strategy: Ask the students Who likes to play games? Then ask, Are you
ready to put your skills and knowledge of elements and principles of design to use while
designing a room? Explain to the students that they will be playing an online game of
interior design.
Initial Presentation: To introduce the game Home Sweet Home, the teacher will give a
demonstration using the interactive board. Teacher will display how to play the game
and its options. Also, students will be able to ask questions about playing the game.
Activity: Students will view rubric of the assignment that will be complete while playing
Home Sweet Home. After reviewing rubric and expectations, students will login and
begin designing a room through the game. Students must include the use 3 elements
and 3 principles of design in their room. They must use computer tool Snipping by
creating screen shots of their room. Students will print out pictures and display work
throughout the classroom.

Learner Assessment:

Johnson & Howard: Page 5

Lesson 1 Assessment: Students will be graded based their posts and responses to the
two discussions. They must display descriptions of elements and principles of design
and the effects that each creates on interior design.
Lesson 2 Assessment: Students will be graded based on their participation in group
presentations. They will also receive a grade for individual posts to the Padlet wall. They
must post one example of a well-designed room and one poor example.
Lesson 3 Assessment: Teacher will grade students final designs according to a rubric.
Student must include 3 elements and 3 principles of design in the design of the room.
