2015 Mandatory Competencies

For New Medical Staff (must complete within 4 weeks, details on next page on how to access Welearn and courses)

Bullying and Harassment Found in All Staff (One off for all new staff)
Blood Transfusion Medical Staff Found in Clinical Staff (this is a one off for all JMS but not required for SMS)
Hand hygiene (follow directions on next page) Found in All Staff

Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT) (follow directions on next page) Found in Clinical Staff

Manual Handling Found in All Staff (this is a new requirement for all staff)
Ordering of Appropriate Diagnostic Tests Found in Clinical Staff (all Interns, HMOs & BPTs)

Ongoing Annual Mandatory Competencies


These are the ongoing annual mandatory competencies for all medical staff employed at WH and that have previously
completed their initial new staff competencies in the first 4 weeks of employment.

Basic Life Support (BLS-D) Practical** (need to book into a session)

in All Staff**note this is annual for high risk areas and is decided by the manager (all Interns, HMOs & BPTs do
this yearly due to rotation through high risk areas)
Manual Handling Found in All Staff (this is a new requirement for all staff)

**You must complete both the BLSD practical session and online quiz successfully to be deemed successfully completing this competency.

If you are required to complete ALS as part of your role, then you must complete both the ALS practical and WeLearn quiz to be
deemed competent for ALS (there is no need to do BLSD also).
All junior medical staff (excluding interns) rotating to Williamstown must complete ALS.
Certificates for ALS/BLSD practical from external courses can be submitted to the Resuscitation Coordinator (Judith DeGraaf) or
MEO (Paula Gray) for approval for annual competency. Please ensure you include your employee number in the email.

Go the Western Healths intranet site

Select Welearn from under the Quicklinks section on the left-hand side of the page and then follow the instructions
on the Welearn homepage to log in

Your username is your employee number.


The first time you log in, the password should be your employee number (i.e. 73114) but if that doesnt work, try
password. If your account has never been used and you can not log in, you will need to ask for a password reset.
If you are unsure of your password/login details (or need a reset) for WeLearn, please contact
WH-ElearnHelpdesk@wh.org.au (and give your name and employee number).
Hand hygiene competency
Ensure staff do the medical staff package. This ensures that the person appears in the reporting done by Infection
Prevention.
After completing the quiz, please ensure the following;

Select your organization (Western Health, not the hospital)


Select your department Medical (Doctor)
Do not enter employee ID, simply click on find it will say unable to find
Enter your name (no nicknames, must be name you are employed with) and click submit
Save your certificate
Submit your certificate to your line manager if that is the process used in your area

ANTT course
Is very particular and requires that every item be ticked before it will pass you. Without doing this, the system will not
recognize you have completed the course (and therefore still come up as not competent).
