Presenter

Simone Gianotti Technical Marketing Specialist,

Motion & Safety Solutions

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the participant should be able to:
Describe the basics of motion control applications and the difference between motion
control and VFD applications
Define motion control applications between single- and multi-axis applications and be
able to describe the difference between coordinated, synchronized and interpolated
motion
Define general product categories and common motion architectures and the
advantages and disadvantages related to each

Identify potential customers in target market segments and be able to create and
pursue motion control opportunities, using Schneider Electric sales support resources
Ask the necessary questions to collect the basic information required for initial sizing
and selection to match drive to application

Motion Architecture
A motion architecture is generally made with these product categories:

Controllers

The controller sends the motion commands to the drive and is

able to supervise single- or multi-axis systems.

Drives

The drive converts the power and it regulates the torque,

speed and position of the motor.

Motors

The motor drives the mechanical parts.

Product Selection
Motion Application Identification
Motion applications typically involve one or more of the following:
High precision positioning

Fast settling times

High acceleration and deceleration rates
Precise velocity regulation over broad velocity range
Coordinated or synchronized movement

Schneider Electric - ACE 2012 Selling Motion

30

Product Selection
Motion Application
Once a motion application is identified, it is necessary to talk to
the Electrical and Mechanical engineer on the project to figure out:
Drive train components (mechanical)
Appropriate Drives
Appropriate Motors
Appropriate Logic or Motion controller
Operator control and network interfaces

Schneider Electric - ACE 2012 Selling Motion

31

Product Selection
Important Questions for new Applications
What is the weight of the load?
What is the physical size of the load?
Is it moved horizontally, vertically, at an angle, or rotated?
How fast are you moving the load into position?
How long is it held in position before the next move?
(What is the dwell time?)

Schneider Electric - ACE 2012 Selling Motion

32

Product Selection
Important Questions for new Applications
What is the cycle time of the movements?
Are the position movements always the same or are there multiple
profiles that need to be performed?
Are there multiple axis that are coordinated or synchronized?

Always keep in mind with new motion application

we are considering:

Load
Time
Inertia
Schneider Electric - ACE 2012 Selling Motion

33

Product Selection
Important Questions for Cross-referencing

If the application is an existing motion application ,

then you will need to consider parameters in terms of:

Torque
Speed
Inertia
Check existing motor plate:

Motion Control Market

LXM32 Sales Pitch
I would like to introduce a $25 million investment to you.

Schneider Electric, at our Motion Headquarters in Germany, has spent the last 3
years, developing the Lexium 32 AC Servo drive and motor offer, the latest
generation of AC Servo range.
We aimed to offer what we believe is the highest performance versus smallest
servo drive in the industry today, utilizing the state of the art and latest generation
technologies of IGBTs and chipsets.
As a global leader of the energy management, we know that the way of converting
electricity to a dynamical and accurate movement is important for many of our
customers.

Consequently, we incorporated features, which are now more & more critical to
OEM machine designers, such as: SIL 3 standard and advanced safety, DC bus
sharing on all drives, simplicity in tuning and set-up, utilizing memory card, quick
changeover, and an IPOD inspired intuitive Rotate & Click HMI
Further with side by side mounting, smaller heat sink, and fan less operation, we
simplify the installation as well as saving you money in installation costs.
The Servo drive is supplied with our latest range of controllers as a solution, as a
stand alone device, or as field bus device open to all major 3rd party PLCs
