UNIT-II COMPONENTS OF CIM

Part-A (Questions & Answers)

1.

Define Computer Integrated Manufacturing.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) encompasses the entire range of product
development and manufacturing activities with all the functions being carried out with the help
of dedicated software packages.

2.

What are the basic components of CIM system?

Machine tools & related equipments
Material handling system
Computer system
Human labour

3.

List out the factors that define the processing requirements:

Part size
Part shape and variety
Product life cycle
Definition of future parts
Operations other than machining.

4.

What are the various principal data files in CIMS?

Part program file
Routing file
Part production file
Pallet reference file
Station tool file
Tool life file

5.

What are the benefits of CIMS?

Increased machine utilization
Reduced direct and indirect labour
Reduced manufacturing lead time
Lower in-process inventory
Scheduling flexibility

6.

Is CIM a concept or a technology?

CIM is both a concept and a technology. For top management, CIM is a concept, a blue
print for success. For middle managers and line managers, CIM is a technology, a physical
realization of resources that are more capable and flexible.

7.

Differentiate between CIM I and CIM II.

CIM I refers to computer interfaced Manufacturing, where as CIM-II stands for Computer
Integrated Manufacturing.
CIM I is a result of the fourth generation of computers, whereas CIM II is a result of fifth
generation of computers.

8.

List any two benefits of CIM.

Tangible benefits
Higher profits
Improved quality
Shorter time to market with new products
Shorter flow time
Shorter vendor lead time
Reduced inventory levels
Improved schedule performance

Intangible benefits
Improved customer service
Greater Flexibility
Greater responsiveness
Improved competitiveness
Safer working environment
Higher employee morale
More opportunities for upgrading skills

9.

What is meant by asynchronous data transfer?

In asynchronous data transfer, data is sent one byte (or character) at a time. Each string of
bits making up the byte is bracketed, or marked off, with special control bits.

10.

Differentiate between LAN model and MAN model.

A local area network (LAN) is a privately owned communications network used within a
geographical area.
A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a communication network covering a geographic
area the size of city or suburb.

11.

What is communication network? List its types.

A communication network is a collection of equipment and physical media that
interconnects two or more computers.
Types may be internal or external communication.

12.

Differentiate IGES and GKS graphics standards.

GKS stands for GRAPHICAL KERNEL SYSTEM. GKS is an ANSI and ISO
standard.GKS standardizes two-dimensional graphics functionality at a relatively low level.
IGES stands for INITIAL GRAPHICS EXCHANGE SPECIFICATION. IGES is a popular
data exchange standard.

13.

What is MAP model?

MAP is manufacturing automation protocol and these standards are essentially an
application specific subset of the ISO protocols designed to meet the needs of factory
automation.

14.

What are the various types of communications in CIM?

Point to point communication (PTP), star and multiplexing

15.

What is meant by topology? Also list different basic topologies available.

The topology of a network is the geometric representation of the relationship of all the
links and linking devices to each other.
The five basic topologies are: star, tree, bus, ring and hybrid.

16.

Mention the different types of transmission media used.

1. Guided (or wired) media
a. twisted pair cable
b. Coaxial cable
c. Fiber optic cable
2. Unguided (or wireless) media
a. free space

17.

List out the components of a data communication system.

Message, Sender, Receiver, Medium, and Protocol.
