LA ROCHELLE
The Pinnacle of Single-Vineyard Pinot Noir
The Evolution of a Winery
La Rochelle Wines is tied to the earliest days of
Pinot Noir in California. This producer of classic
small-lot, single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
and sparkling wine, has recently moved their
winemaking operations and tasting room to
Kenwood (Sonoma Valley) when it was acquired by
thirty-year wine industry veteran Chuck Easley and
his wife, Jill Hays. They purchased the winery from
close friends, Steven and June Mirassou. Chuck had
worked with La Rochelles winemaker, Tom Stutz at
the Mirassou winery early in his wine career, back
in the 1980s. Chucks love of Pinot Noir, respect for
Tom and gratitude for all of the contributions made
by the Mirassou family to Californias wine history,
made it a perfect fit.
La Rochelles mission: offer an opportunity to
experience how Pinot Noir and Chardonnay express
themselves when sourced from the most prestigious
growing sites in California. They produce 17 singlevineyard Pinot Noirs, five Chardonnays, a Pinot
Meunier and even a single-vineyard Blanc de Noir
Sparkling Wine.
Membership Experiences
The focus at La Rochelle is to offer visitors an experience, along with the
opportunity to taste the diversity of California Pinot Noir and Chardonnayall
in one place. This small family winery invites you into their world of wine,
making you feel right at home, no matter your level of wine knowledge. The
team includes Chuck and Jill, Tom Stutz (Winemaker), Dave Natali (Asst.
Winemaker), Mamie Breard, Chucks son, Ryan Easley, the winery dogs, Daisy
and Deano, the numerous Koi, catfish and chickens!
Through La Rochelles two membership programs, members have access to
an exclusive selection of wines, hailing from the most prestigious vineyards
and appellations in California such as Mendocino Ridge, Anderson Valley,
Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Petaluma Gap, Bennett Valley, Carneros,
Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Lucia Highlands ... with Santa Rita Hills
coming soon. The Pinot Noir Experience Membership features single-vineyard
Pinot Noirs made exclusively for members. This membership is currently sold
out, but eager Pinotfiles are encouraged to add their names to the wait-list.
The La Rochelle Experience Membership (featuring all wines produced) is
currently accepting new members and is the best way to sample the depth of
the La Rochelle portfolio including award-winning Chardonnays, sparkling
wine and their much-sought-after Pinot Meunier.

Sometimes, the best a destination has to offer cant be found in your Frommers
guide. High above the heavily-trafficked Napa Valley floor and hundreds of
pretentious, monotonous wineries, sits a century-old treasure: Pope Valley Winery.
This scenic road less traveled, draped with vineyards and offering panoramic views
of the picturesque Napa Valley, leads you northeast of the Silverado Trail and back in
time to 40 quaint, country acres. Here, the Burgundy Wine and Olive Oil Factory was
founded in 1897, a three-story gravitational winery that shipped wine by train to Al
Capones Chicago speakeasies during Prohibition. A century later, it was purchased by
the Eakle family, long-time Pope Valley Residents, and given new life.
The winery no longer sells to gangsters, but not too much else has changed. Pope
Valley Winerys mark of authenticity is signed and sealed with the nineteenth century
farming equipment, hand dug cave and original blacksmith shop, farmhouse and
wagon shed, all still on the property.
In 2009, siblings David Eakle as winemaker and Diana Eakle Hawkins as general
manager, took hold of the reins with the goal of bringing Pope Valley Winery to the
next level of quality, distinction and recognition. They hand-craft 5,000 cases of fine
wines a year, among them the Estate Reserve Cab and Merlot Eakle Ranch, which both
won Best in Class for their 2010 vintages at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine
Competition. Theyre known for their Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel Port, and a very
rare Old Vine Chenin Blanc, and produce Sangiovese Ros, Sauvignon Blanc and
Zinfandel as well.
Visitors who are welcomed like old friends can embark on one-of-a-kind tours
of the historic grounds and through the cave, which took nine long years to dig. A
variety of tasting options include custom wine flights, picnics, a private view of the
vineyards from their 1897 Lounge and a Brunch & Bubbles Experience for the early
birds. Wine Club members can even get away for a night with a stay in the original
farmhouse, sipping wine under a bright sky completely blanketed in stars.
No need for frills, extravagance or even paved roads. The only bells and whistles
youll find here is literally on old ringing bell on a big oak tree. Pope Valley Winery
prides itself in staying true to its historic, Old Napa roots, while making fine wines that
can compete with the best of the New Age Valley below.

lovers who have been, a repeat wine and art pairing experience is in order. Visitors will
once again be able to explore fine selections from Donald Hesss personal
contemporary art collection. The Hess Art Museum has fully re-opened following
restoration and repairs from damage sustained in the South Napa earthquake. During
the renovation a new floor was installed in the third-floor West Gallery, walls were
repaired, freshly painted and galleries were reconfigured to best showcase the art.
The works displayed on Mount Veeder are an international representation of the
most important ideas and art positions of the past forty years by now-renowned
modern and contemporary artists such as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Francis Bacon,
Gilbert & George, Franz Gertsch, Anselm Kiefer, Armando, Robert Rauschenberg,
Robert Motherwell, Frank Stella, Rolf Iseli and Per Kirkeby.
Donald Hess began sharing his passion for art with the greater public in 1989 by
exhibiting his collection in museums around the world. You can travel the globe to see
first-hand the art Hess has collected over the years at the Hess Family Estate wineries.
The first exhibit opened in Napa Valley at The Hess Collectiion Winery, the second at
Glen Carlou Vineyards in Paal, South Africa, the third at the James Turrell Museum of
The Hess Art Collection at Bodega & Estancia Colom in Salta, Argentina
You will quickly discern, Donald Hess is not a sporadic collector, only acquiring
pieces that challenge or touch him personally. He is primarily interested in works by
living artists, just starting their careers. In his forty years of collecting, he has formed
many deep friendships.

JESSUP CELLARS
Join the TasteMaker Series and Indulge in a
Surreal Harvest Dinner with Gastronaut Bob Blumer
Dont miss Jessup Cellars Surreal Harvest Dinner with Gastronaut, artist and seventime Guinness World Record holder Bob Blumer and winemaker Rob Lloyd in final 2015
TasteMaker Series on Saturday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. Located just up the street from the
famed The French Laundry in the quaint village of Yountville, Jessup Cellars offers a oneof-a kind dining experience in their spacious gallery amongst curated art, which features
rotating exhibitions by celebrated regional and national artists. Cynthia Carey is curator
and artist, displaying her art during the event.
The private dinner is sure to please and delight your senses, promising a night of
creative, dynamic, surprising, out-of-the-box times including a delicious menu of food and
wine. One of my all-time favorite dinners that I have ever experienced, says Jessup
Cellars winemaker, Rob Lloyd. I love art where I can tell that the artist put a lot of
thought into what they are doing, and the dinner with Bob Blumer is such an artful event.
Its great when the wines pair with the meal served, but it goes another level when the
meal is visually stunning and mentally surprises your taste buds. You have to be there to
fully comprehend what a Blumer Surreal Meal means.
Come and see for yourself why the Jessup Cellars intimate and fun TasteMaker Series is
such a big hit and sells out every time!
JESSUP CELLARS
Jessup Cellars is known for their artful blends. Set in Jessup Cellars Tasting Gallery,
the four course Surreal Harvest Dinner includes four distinct pairings:
- 2014 Viognier: This is a lovely, floral, elegant and captivating vintage. The 2014
Viognier begs sip after sip evoking the essence of fresh white peaches, juicy apricots and
pineapple, honeysuckle and lime. Its bright acidity compliments a deliciously creamy,
lingering finish.
- 2012 Mannys Blend: From densely delicious to seductively scented, the 2012 Mannys

GLORIA FERRER
CAVES & VINEYARDS
Grilled Oysters
with Toasted Prosciutto Quinoa Crumbs
Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards launched their
first ever nationwide Glorious Bites Competition to
find the best appetizer in the country that pairs with
their Sonoma Brut. They looked to Season 10 Top
Chef star Brooke Williamson to help them.
Brooke and winery staff judged the top ten
finalists recipes in cook-off competitions in New York
City and San Francisco last month, narrowing the
field of appetizer-making contestants down to just
four, who will compete in a throw-down appetizer
showdown at the winery on October 10th, where a
winner will be chosen. Join them for the exciting
conclusion! The winner will be crowned and
presented with a $5,000 cash prize.
The event will take place at Gloria Ferrer Caves &
Vineyards in beautiful Sonoma Valley on Saturday
October 10, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m..
The four semi-finalists will battle it out Top Chef
style and present their winning signature appetizer for
a chance at a $5,000 cash prize!
Award-winning author, speaker, wine consultant,
and television star Leslie Sbrocco (@lesliesbrocco) will
host this event.
Tickets are $40 per person ($25 for wine club
members). Appetizers and sparkling wine are
included in the price of the ticket. Doors open at
11:00 am. Guests will have the opportunity to take
photos with Chef Brooke Williamson as long as time
permits.

Quinoa
1. Heat a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
2. When hot, add the olive oil and the butter.
3. Add the prosciutto and saut until crisp.
4. Add the garlic and saut until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
5. Add the lemon juice, zest, chili pepper flakes, quinoa, salt, pepper and parsley.
6. Cook over low heat until quinoa is slightly browned and has crunchy bites throughout.
Oysters
Note: If you can find large, fat oysters, you can place the oysters directly on the grill grates. If the oysters are too
small for the grates of your grill, place them on a bed of rock salt or rice in a small panand then place the entire
pan inside the grill or under a broiler. This steadies the oysters and prevents them from wobbling.
1. Place the oysters, cup side up on a very hot, preheated grill, cover and cook for 1 minute. The oysters
should now be slightly open. Quickly remove the oysters. Hold an oyster with an oven mitt and use a
shucking knife to pry open the oyster. It should easily open. Spoon your quinoa bread crumbs into each oyster
and return oysters to the grill. Cover and grill 4-5 minutes.
2. Serve while still hot so that the quinoa crumbs dont get soggy in your oyster liquid.

Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

Vineyard Hike
Annual Pig Roast October 24
Make reserations now for Fritz Underground Winerys
Annual Pig Roast. This event has sold out each year since
its inaugural dinner five years ago, so book your tickets
early to enjoy an evening filled with a delicious roast whole
hog complete with an abundance of dishes featuring
produce from the winerys organic garden. Winemaker Brad
Longton will be pouring new release wines along with a few
special library selections from their cellar. Festivities
begin at 6:30 p.m., including live music on the patio.
A relaxing fall evening under the stars awaits you.
$45 per person for club members | $75/non-members.
Dust off your hiking boots and pack the sunscreen as youre in for a literal breath of fresh air
when one Fritzs winery team guides you on 2-mile trek of their 112-acre estate. The moderateclimb trail takes you through their vineyard and orchards, an old redwood grove and to a natural
mineral spring. Along the way, youll get an informative look at their vineyard trellising systems
and taste a wine or two grown from a specific trellis block. After the hike, theres a behind the
scenes tour of the winemaking facility and caves, followed by a seated tasting featuring five of
their current release wines. The Vineyard Hike is available year-round (weather permitting) and
is offered daily by appointment at 10:30 a.m. for $45 per person. Allow 90 minutes for hike and
tasting. Hiking shoes and apparel required. Club members receive one complimentary hike per
year with up to six guests.

Tickets are now on sale for B.R. Cohn Charity Events (BRCCE)
2015 Sonoma Music Festival, October 2-4 at the Field of Dreams
near downtown Sonoma. Appearing at the successor to his fabled
28-year winery fall festival are Chicago and America on Friday
evening, October 2; Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band with Pablo
Cruise Saturday evening, October 3; and the Doobie Brothers with
Michael McDonald, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Gregg Allman,
the Edgar Winter Band, Tommy Castro and others Sunday
afternoon, October 4. Tickets and information are available on the
website at www.sonomamusicfestival.com or call 1-888-810-2063.
Tickets range from VIP experiences starting at $1000, $350 to
$219 for Gold Circle (Friday/Saturday) and $119 and $89 for
general admission seated tickets for all days. A limited amount of
$47 local Sonoma tickets for standing room only will be available
in person with locations announced soon. Special ticket packages,
including three-day tickets and limo packages, will also be
available through the website.
The Sonoma Music Festival was born from the desire of BRCCE
to change up its annual fall event formerly at B.R. Cohn Winery
and move it closer to town for a more community event. The new
Field of Dreams location not only puts the concert goer two
blocks from Sonomas Plaza, it allows the festival the opportunity
to grow and generate more proceeds for charity. This years
beneficiaries include national and local veterans organizations
including Fisher House and American Legion Post 489, the
Redwood Food Bank, Bread and Roses and others to be
announced. Over its 28-year history BRCCE has raised more than
6.5 million dollars for charity.
This is a very impressive three-day line-up, exclaimed Bruce
Cohn. Not only do we get to finally present a Beatle, but all of
these great acts are a perfect fit for Sonoma and wine country.
Come up to stay, shop and enjoy this great music-filled fundraising
weekend.
Plans call for the best music, food and wine Sonoma has to
offer. Many of the regions finest purveyors are joining in, including
Lagunitas Brewing, a pop-up HopMonk beer garden, high-end and
popular restaurants and, of course, some of the best wine in
California including B.R. Cohn and many others.
There will be no in and out privileges.

Fort Ross-Seaview Wine Festival Returns with another Spectacular Line Up on October 17th
Food and Wine Festival Showcases Premier Coastal Wines Paired with Centuries Old Russian Heritage along California Coastal Wine Country
As the fog burns off of the hillsides, the magical beauty of the west
Sonoma coastline is uncovered at Fort Ross State Historic Park and
on October 17th, the third annual Fort Ross-Seaview Wine Festival
will showcase the wines and culinary cuisine from one of Sonoma
Countys most scenic and smallest American Viticultural Areas (AVA).
The Fort Ross-Seaview Wine Festival is hosted by the Fort RossSeaview Winegrowers Association (http://fortross-seaview.org), a
consortium of wineries and growers in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA
dedicated to farming coastal cool grapes above the fog on the very
edge of the continent. This year, participating Fort Ross-Seaview AVA
wineries and vineyards include: Piazza Del Dotto (luncheon only),
Flowers Vineyard & Winery, Fort Ross
Vineyard & Winery, Kutch Wines,
Martinelli Winery, RAEN Winery, Tin
Barn Vineyards, Wayfarer Vineyard,
Wild Hog Vineyard and Precious
Mountain Vineyard/Williams Selyem.
Four-Course Luncheon
In addition to the Tasting Tent, the festival is also offering the
Grand Luncheon, which includes a four-course meal of seasonal fare
expertly paired with special reserve wines from the AVA, prepared by

and food pairing, and wine tasting experiences for both the wine
novice and expert.
The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards uses locally grown organic
ingredients and features ingredient-driven California wine
country cuisine. While the menu holds its foundation in
American dishes, it is influenced by French and Italian provincial
cuisine. The seasonal menu changes daily, utilizing produce from
The Restaurants organic garden.
Wente Vineyards is also the only winery in Livermore Valley to
offer a championship 18-hole public golf course.
Family, food, entertainment, and of course, the wines beckon
visitors to experience the legacy that is Wente Vineyards.

Winegrowing Decisions
BY JOSH STEIN
contact with the gross lees or separation into barrels, casks or tanks
before fermentation is even fully done?
Intensity, of course, leads to discussions of alcohol and sugar.
Residual sugar is actually something which is easy to control if the
winemaking is detail-oriented. Fermentation is never the same twice,
but each and every one can and must be tracked for temperature,
yeast health, amounts and kinds of nutrients, Brix and alcohol, and
other leading indicators of how well and how fast the conversion of
sugars to alcohols and malic to lactic acid, if applicable, is happening.
Arresting the fermentation, pulling the emergency break, if you will,
is generally done through shutting down the temperature and adding
enough sulfites to knock out the yeast. Its more of a coast than a
dead stop, however, with attention to the numbers and experience
being the producers of desired results. This is obviously aided or
held back by the starting Brix levels, as noted above.
I like to think of fine winemaking as very much akin to fine
cooking and baking, so its no wonder the two go hand in hand in
wine country. We strive through our winegrowing, like the chef who
grows and raises her own flora and flauna, to produce fantastic
ingredients for which we have recipes developed through
education, time in others cellars and experience. The next time you
sip a red, think about what decisions were or were not made, and
consider, too, what you would have done the same or differently had
the recipe been yours to tweak. Enjoy!
Josh Stein has been in the Napa wine business for more than a dozen years, and, in addition
to being owner/winemaker of the Stein Family Wine Group, which produces a nationally and
internationally distributed portfolio of wine brands and donates a percentage of its sales, he
regularly consults for wineries and organizations throughout the North Bay and Coast via
their subsidiaries, Discrete Wine Support Services and Napa Valley Writing Services.
