Opto-electronic protective devices

Selection of opto-electronic
protective devices
The use of opto-electronic protective devices instead of mechanical
protective devices is recommended
when an operator must intervene
in a process and is thus subjected
to danger. Opto-electronic protective devices reduce access
times, increase productivity and
improve the ergonomics of a
workplace. In addition, operators
and other people are equally
protected.
The basic criteria for the selection
of an opto-electronic protective
device depend on a variety of
requirements, such as:
The standards to be observed
The space available in front of
the hazardous area
Commercial criteria
Ergonomic factors (e.g. periodic
insertion of parts, or no need
for periodic access).

IEC 61508
Compliant

Safet y
camera system

V4000 Press Brake is a camerabased safety system for bending

presses which comprises a sender
and receiver mounted level with the
tool and generates a protective area
below it. This is used to monitor the
fast closing motion of the press. In
addition to the optical components,
V4000 Press Brake also includes
complete signal evaluation and
requires no additional components.
The system can be easily integrated
because it uses the already available
signals of the linear measurement
systems of the press for determining
the position, speed, direction and
stopping distance.
Applications

Safety light curtains are used for

finger and hand protection. They comprise a sender and receiver and operate contact-free. Dependant on the
type, different machine functions are
integrated or can be selected via safe
control solutions: Restart interlock,
external device monitoring, fixed/floating blanking, PSDI function, bypass
function, operating mode selection,
cascading, etc.

Multiple light beam safety devices

and safety light curtains are used for
electro-sensitive access protection
of hazardous areas. They comprise a
sender and receiver or an active side
(sender/receiver in a single housing)
and a deflector mirror.

Single-beam photoelectric safety

switches are used for electro-sensitive access protection of hazardous
areas. They comprise self-testing senders/receivers or a combination of an
evaluation unit and testable senders/
receivers.

Applications
Robots, processing units, palletiser
systems, stone setting machines, stackers, and woodworking machines.

Safety switches
Safety switches and safety control
units for the highest requirements
SICK can offer you the right solution to protect your machine or
plant from numerous different
safety switches: From electromechanical switches in compact
plastic or corrosion-resistant metal
housings up to electro-sensitive
safety switches with integrated
evaluation units. In addition to
safety switches, SICK also supplies
suitable and safe control solutions.

Opening and starting directions

Safet y position and

hinge switches

Safety position switches are used to

detect positions or as hinge switches.
Applications
i10H and i110H hinge switches ensure that rotating protective devices are
closed.
Safety position switches ensure safe
position monitoring even for very fast
movements or where exact positions
must be determined.
In addition, IN4000 safety switches
(see next page) permit electro-sensitive and wear-free position monitoring.
Products
Safety position switches with roller

locking devices

In contrast to safety switches with

separate actuators, SICK safety
locking devices have an additional
lock.
The status locked is indicated via
an LED or detected by the signalling
contact.
Applications
When a door must not be opened
immediately because delayed stopping poses a danger to persons or
constitutes an intervention into a
process.

Electro-sensitive
safet y switches

Since SICK safety switches operate

on an electro-sensitive basis they
have great advantages compared with
electro-mechanical safety switches
and are therefore an optimal addition.
Three sensor technologies and different versions of the evaluation units
(semiconductor or relay) facilitate
solutions for a number of different
applications.
Applications
Ideal for situations where protection
against manipulation is required,
where there are vibrations or where
greater tolerances are required.
For places which are very dirty or
where very high hygienic requirements must be observed.
Ideal for protection or position monitoring of places which are difficult to
reach (maintenance-free).
Low-cost protection of up to 10 doors
or monitoring of up to 10 positions.

O P ERATING DEVICE S

SICK safety operating devices ensure

that hazardous movements are shut
down safely or critical machine functions are activated.
Applications
The E100 enabling switch is used in
setup mode. In this case, the protective devices are usually not activated.
Cable operated emergency stop switches are used for machines which
are not secured by safety covers, e.g.
conveyor belts.
