PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES

FIRST YEAR 2014

An Interview with An Older Individual Assignment Guide for Students

PAC1322Pharmacy,Health&Society2,2014

Introduction
Pharmacists interact with individuals from different age group, social and economic backgrounds.
These individuals have different types of medical and/or medication needs. As an individual gets
older,theirphysiologywillchange.Forexample,theolderindividual(typicallydefinedasthoseaged

multiple medicines and vulnerability to adverse outcomes increases. Thus it is not surprising that
pharmacistroutinelyprovideadviceandsupporttoolderindividualsabouttheirmedical,medication
andotherneeds.
Accordingly,anappreciationofthechallengesfacedbytheolderindividuals(e.g.medicalproblems
commonly encountered) will significantly facilitate the pharmacists ability to support these
individuals. In Semester1 (in PAC1311), you were introduced to topics such as Aged Care and
Medicines in Older People, PatientCentred Care, Communications, Human Behaviours, Roles of
PharmacistsandtheHealthcareSystem.
To further extend your knowledge, in Semester2, you will be required to speak to an older

28th July 2014

To Whom It May Concern,
Dear Sir/Madam,
This is to introduce you to __________________________________________, a first year Pharmacy student at
Monash University. All first year students enrolled in the Monash Universitys unit, Pharmacy, Health & Society-2
are required to spend approximately 30 60 minutes talking to an older individual (someone aged 65 years and
above). The student has a copy of examples of questions which they may ask the older individual. If you need them,
the student can provide the sample questions (i.e. the interview guide) to you.
The intent of this assignment is to enhance the students understanding of the medical, medication and other needs
which an older individual will encounter. It is also to give students the opportunity to identify/consider how the
healthcare system can support the older individuals medical and medication needs, and also the challenges
encountered by the older individual. The desired outcomes of this task are that the student:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Acquire some experience in speaking to an older individual.

Develop some understanding of the social and economic challenges faced by an older individual.
Develop an understanding of the healthcare needs of an older individual.
Develop an understanding of the medical problems (i.e. type of illness) encountered by the older
individual and how are the problems managed.
5. Develop an understanding of the medicine used by older individual.
6. Is able to identify what roles a pharmacist have in supporting the ageing population.

Each student will spend ~30 to 60 minutes talking with an older individual. This duration is only a guide. Note that a
mutually agreed duration is also acceptable. The information gained will be shared with other students in a workshop
setting at the university. Importantly, the names and addresses of individuals, facility and staff involved with the
interview will NOT appear in any reports or presentations. Information which could lead to the identification of any
individual or facility will NOT be recorded or presented.
The student has been informed that at all times, they need to maintain absolute confidentiality and be respectful.
Monash University has an insurance policy which covers students on fieldwork placements.
We are very grateful for the time that is given to our students by you. If you are a staff of the Retirement Village or
Aged Care Facility which is allowing our student to visit your Facility, we will be grateful if you can kindly introduce
the student to one or more of your residents who is willing and able to speak to the student. Please contact me
(details below) if you have any questions. We value your feedback regarding any aspect of this fieldwork experience.
Thank you
Best wishes,
