LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT/RESOURCES

Next Generation Learning – are you on the map?

The Government’s Next Generation Learning campaign is encouraging

parents/carers/governors to take an increased interest in ICT provision in
schools. Becta's Online Self-review Framework (SRF) offers a route for
assessing and improving a school's use of ICT as part of Next Generation
Learning. Check http://www.nextgenerationlearning.org.uk/ to see if your school
is shown on the Next Generation Learning map – right. The framework is free to use and
is linked to the national standards for ICT. It can help:
 Show what "good" use of ICT looks like Register for the Becta SRF at: -
 Benchmark your progress against other schools https://selfreview.becta.org.uk
 Identify your strengths
 Produce action plans for improvement.

LGfL DigitalBrain Email closing July 2010/London Safemail for pupils coming soon
LGfL Digital Brain Mail (@lgfl.net) for adults and pupils will cease to exist from July 2010. The button
that is available on the existing LGfL email will disappear from this time, therefore removing access to existing
emails. LGfL StaffMail has replaced this for staff. New accounts already exist for every member of staff.
Please ask your headteacher who your nominated contact is for StaffMail. Pupil accounts will be available
in the Summer Term 2010. These will include London SafeMail accounts. These accounts will be look
similar to StaffMail accounts – with fully functional Outlook Web Access. This will include the option to only
email only within accounts across the school.

LONDON MANAGED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT - MLE

London Managed Learning Environment in action - New best practice video launched
A new video has been launched by the HIAS ICT team in
association with Towers Junior School to demonstrate the
effective use of the London MLE.
 To examine the process behind planning for implementation
of the London MLE
 To emphasise the importance of continuing professional
development to support the implementation
 To explore the benefits to support school improvement
planning and school self-evaluation processes
 To help support pupils‟ learning and parental engagement
The video will be emailed to all schools and will be available from the Primary ICT Room on the London MLE.
Effective practice with the London Managed Learning Environment – Brookside Infant School
Brookside Infant School‟s ICT Leader
Nicola Maher and MLE Administrator
Wendy Pope have used the Forum
tool within the MLE to develop a
„Construction Site‟ allowing all users to
feed into the development of the MLE.
This is proving very useful.

Watch out Warner Brothers! As Scotts Primary School unveil their new Apple Mac film studio

There‟s a touch of Hollywood over in Hornchurch these days, since Scotts Primary School converted a
cupboard in their Year 6 classroom into a film studio. Headteacher Simon Abeledo is rightfully proud of the
work. Apple Mac computers, funded through Tesco vouchers and double-glazed windows to provide sound-
proofing (for £1500) mean that pupils are now able to engage in film and animation work at a very minimal
cost. Pupils have been developing their skills very quickly, with support from ICT Leader Jan Taylor.

Crownfield Junior School accept the National Story Telling Video-Conferencing Challenge
To celebrate National Storytelling Week, three professional
Storytellers working for „Everyday Magic‟ presented an exciting
videoconference challenge to Primary schools. Here Crownfield
Junior School ICT Leader Suzanne Nott explains...
“Four of our Y5's took part. They received great feedback from the
professional storytellers (all three were listening to the
contributions from the schools). They said our set was fantastic;
the children's gestures and expressions when telling the story
really brought it alive and that the ending sent tingles up their
spines! We were the final school to perform, so spent the
morning enjoying the performances from the eight other schools.”

Music Learning Live: Another innovative use of video-conferencing

Engayne Primary School participated in this

excellent video-conferencing event on Friday 26th
February 2010 – supported by the Havering
Music Service. The event focussed on music education with sessions on Dalcroze,
Kodaly, Thinking Skills in Music and Inventing Music.

WHAT’S ALSO HAPPENING WITH ICT IN HAVERING?
BETT 2010: Elm Park and Hylands pupils wow the crowds/Scargill Infant awarded ICT Mark
Hylands Primary, Elm Park Primary and Scargill Infant Schools were all in action at
BETT 2010. Pupils from Hylands Primary School demonstrated how they are using
visualisers to improve learning and teaching. Similarly, pupils from Elm Park Primary did the
same – as well as this the Elm Park pupils were interviewed live on the radio. Finally,
Scargill Infant School were presented with their ICT Mark certificate. Variously throughout the week, the HIAS
ICT team spotted representatives from many Havering schools eager to find out about the latest products and
services.

Japanese Ministry of Education Links: Elmo UK ICT Research Project/Visit to schools

As part of the embedding of visualisers and other ICT equipment within

Havering schools, we have been approached by the Japanese Ministry of
Education to undertake a research project within Havering schools. This
research will be used to compare practice between the United Kingdom and Japan. The research will be
undertaken by Dr. Jun Takahashi, Associate Professor at the University of Toyama, Japan on behalf of MEXT
– Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology – Japan and shared at Edu Expo 2010 in Tokyo in
June 2010.
On 15th December 2010, a delegation from the Japanese Ministry of Education visited
The Mawney and Parklands Infant Schools to see ICT supporting learning and teaching
across the school. They were very impressed by what they saw. On 14th January 2010
another delegation visited Scargill Junior School and Scotts Primary School to focus on
handheld and mobile learning and the use of ICT to support administration describing the practice as „Most
excellent!‟

Elm Park Primary School: The Journey - Red carpet is rolled-out at the School’s Oscars event
Episode seven: The Website, the Blog and 'Emily'
A year 5 project sets Catherine, Anu and Oliver off on an
investigation of how the school uses their website and how they are
starting to use their new learning platform or managed learning
environment (MLE). Deputy Head Lesley knows about their website but
what exciting plans do the ICT Team have for developing the MLE? With
the introduction of their MLE, The end of the day and year 5 pupils return
to Catherine‟s parent‟s house to report back on their findings. They are
now much more clued up on their website and are looking forward to working with
“Emily”.http://nextgenerationlearning.org.uk/thejourney

On 10th February 2010 Elm Park Primary hosted an Oscars Ceremony to

celebrate the school’s animation and digital storytelling activities. The
Mayor of Havering Councillor Roger Ramsey was in attendance to present the
prizes alongside HIAS School Improvement Partner Sue Allen and members
of the HIAS ICT Team. The event was a great success with pupils from
Reception through to Year Six presented with awards.
