If socio-economy in the Country
was structured like a restaurant menu, what about the first course, the first order, just for a pleasant start for what
is coming next? Salad, no doubt. And what choice greens should always be present in the
dish? Vegetables, of course.
And if the discerning client (in this case, the Brazilian population) was concerned about
the energetic properties of the main course, in line with the daily calorie needs, which foods
could not be left out? Horticultural products, without any doubt.
Thats it. Vegetables and salads are not just side dishes. If a healthy life is at stake,
they should always be viewed as essential components of a main course. They
are responsible for keeping the body in balance and full of vitality.
Hundreds of species and varieties compose this mosaic
in fields and plant-beds across Brazil.
From remote corners, week after week, huge
amounts of vegetables are harvested and sent to distribution centers over the entire national territory. Through
these distribution centers, like vigorously beating hearts,
in an organic metaphor, vegetables circulate through
thousands of routes to their final destinations: small,
medium and large wholesale and retail outlets. This
is where people go for their vegetable purchases, all
day long, as an assurance for healthy meals, with
plenty
of succulent, nutritious and colored dishes.
This same trajectory, consisting of an immense vegetable production
and trading complex, is followed by the income side. That is why only few supply chains
provide for social and economic inclusion in such an efficient manner. Mini, small and big
farms share the same sustainability conditions and can, side by side, serve the best remunerating and most discerning markets, both at home and abroad. This example, this structure
and this potentiality is a kind of school horticulture offers to Brazilian economy.
And, on the subject of schools, taking a look at the statistical numbers that mirror
the performance at field and market level, there is no doubt about how intensively the
lessons are assimilated. The chain grows, consolidates, gets modernized and reaps everincreasing results.
In accordance with what is happening with the fruit segment, it is more than evident that
Brazil will soon become a huge supplier of vegetables around the globe. Domestic supplies are
under control and, therefore, the time has come for a confident look at the global needs. The
dinner tables of the whole world are just a phone call away. It tastes like more...

Over the past years, Brazilian horticulture has signaled its productive potential, showing evolution in different areas and in a position to meet demand. The latter, nonetheless, has not yet lived up to
expectations: at home, consumption is lagging behind the real needs;
and in the foreign scenario, there is still a deficit between imports
and exports. Advances in this picture are one of the challenges of the
sector and, in the meantime, the supply chain is in search of more
knowledge and recognition, in light of the real importance horticulture assumes in national socioeconomic terms.
Olericulture is a segment that assumes great productive expression amid Brazils renowned agribusiness operations. Still seeking
an accurate definition of its profile, it is already known that the
segment is one of the frontrunners in agricultural production, and
this is all the more true if the traditional cassava is included. Apart
from it, and taking into consideration 32 products, Embrapa Vegetables refers to a harvest of 19.2 million tons in 2011. The Institute
of Agricultural Economics (IEA), in So Paulo, ascertained a similar

O Sul igualmente forte
no setor.
no Centro-Oeste.

40%, representando grande avano no setor.

Brazilian olericulture
sector is getting organized to conduct
a comprehensive socioeconomic
diagnosis, whilst highlighting positive
aspects with promotional initiatives
The development of a complex socioeconomic profile of Brazilian olericulture is now a
priority with the Brazilian Horticulture Institute (Ibrahort), set up in 2010 as a national
representative institution of the sector. The initiative occupies a prominent position on
the 2013 strategic agenda, presented in late 2012, by the entity at the Vegetables Sectoral
Chamber, to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA).
We are managing to leverage the project, through a pilot plan in the State of So
Paulo, jointly with the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae), at
national level, which is to serve as basis for all Brazilian states, says Carlos Schmidt,
president of the institute and executive manager of the So Paulo State Horti-Fruti Association of Producers and Distributors (Aphortesp). After several meetings, all actions were
delineated, and they shall begin in 2013.
The diagnosis is considered to be of fundamental importance for a better knowledge
of the importance of the segment and the need to promote it throughout the market chain,
highlighting its economic, social, health and environmental benefits to the entire population. Within this context, at Ibrahort there are debates about the governance of the supply
chain, also with an eye towards activities focused on marketing aspects, capacity building, competitive intelligence and certification. Incentive to higher consumption of what
is produced is a very particular focus, as already reported in another article, on page 47.

URGENT SOLUTION
Among the specific initiatives for the development of the sector, the meeting held
at the Sectoral Chamber, in December
2012, focused on the regularization, by
the National Health Surveillance Agency
(Anvisa), of the use of agrochemicals for
the so-called Minor crops, like red pepper, cucumber and squash. All Brazilian farmers need an urgent solution regarding products that fight diseases and
pests, says Waldir de Lemos, president of
the Association of Commercial Producers
and Users of Ceasa Grande Rio (Acegri)
and new president of the chamber.
The requirement of standard packaging used at the central distribution
centers was another subject debated
on that occasion. According to Lemos,
there are still great deficiencies among
mini and small-scale farmers in the
utilization of hygienized and labeled
packaging for reasons of vegetable
traceability procedures.
The matter gave rise to the Box Seminar, in So Paulo, in February 2013, with
all debates focused on the best manner
to appropriately operate this structure in
all Brazilian Ceasas. Joo Alberto Paixo
Lages, president of the Brazilian Association of Distribution Centers (Abracen),
comments that surveys have shown that
the use of appropriate boxes could reduce losses by up to 40%, representing a
great step forward of the sector. As of April
2013, the president of Abracen is Ceagesp
official Mrio Murici.

Prices going up
The vegetable sector ended up with a
smaller crop in 2012 and, as a result, farm
gate prices soared, considering the information existing up to that time on all major
products, like tomatoes, potatoes, onions and
cassava. Weather and market conditions dictated the results which, in turn, encouraged
the farmers to increase their plantings and
volumes in the following cycle.
Estimates released by Systematic Survey
of Agricultural Production (LSPA, in the Portuguese acronym), of the Brazilian Institute
of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), reveal that
tomatoes, potatoes, onions and garlic, together,
will amount to 8.5 million tons in the year in
question, down 11.75% from the previous year,
figures that have already been consolidated
at the Municipal Agriculture Production Department (PAM). From 2010 to 2011, according to this database, the said products were
up 5.14%. The same holds true for cassava,
which in 2012 suffered a deficit of 1 million
tons from the previous period, with an estimated production of 24.3 million tons.
Not by chance, prices fetched by these
products in the meantime, were much more
substantial. The Brazilian Economy Institute,
a division of the Getulio Vargas Foundation
ATYPICAL CLIMATE The Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics of the University of So Paulo (Cepea/USP), at
its annual evaluation of the performance of such vegetables as tomatoes, potatoes, onions, carrots and leafy salads, in all major producing areas, also (and in general) confirmed smaller cultivations in 2012. There was reference to very atypical climate conditions and
their influence upon supply and farm gate prices, which soared substantially, especially in the second half of the year.
For 2013, on the turn of the year, the horticulture and fruit sector was supposed to repeat the cultivated area, but still depending on the
results of the Summer crop. In February 2013, IBGE sources pointed to bigger areas devoted to all monthly surveyed vegetables; close to 6%
for potatoes and 2% for onions and tomatoes. Cassava was to suffer no changes, while garlic was signaling reductions.
Ups and downs are common when it comes to adjusting supply and demand but, in view of the representativeness of all major products and the existing expectation, 2013 tends to register an uptrend in the numbers of Brazilian horticulture.

O fator renda, que aumentou no Brasil
j desde 1994, em virtude da estabilizao
econmica, melhorando o poder aquisitivo
tomates inteiros pelados e pimentas inteiras
em azeite, hortalias congeladas de elevado
padro, como ervilhas doces, couve-de-bruxelas e floretes de brcolis de cabea nica;

So Carlos, So Paulo.
do miocrdio, estresses oxidativos, hipertenso arterial e diabetes tipo 2.

The development of varieties and hybrids for the tropics, specifically oriented towards nutritional
aspects, preservation purposes and higher consumption, are all challenges of the sector, commented Celso Moretti, head of Embrapa
Vegetables, in the 2nd Post-Harvest Technology Course, in August 2012, at Embrapa Instrumentation, in So Carlos, So Paulo. With the
introduction of technologies, the official insisted, the vegetables market has been conquering new frontiers and working its way into
such distinct areas as medicine and cosmetics.
Within this context, he informed, work has been done on bioactive compounds and studies focused on cholesterol, acute myocardial
conditions, oxidative stresses, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. The high content of vitamins, mineral salts, fibers and antioxidants found in vegetables have been constantly mentioned in all attempts to make people consume more salads and legumes. The low
consumption levels across the Country suggest there is room for much growth on that score.

a US$ 17 milhes.
WINDING
ROAD
Exports of the
sector are still
lagging behind,
while three times
as many products
are brought in
from abroad
The foreign market has not yet been conquered by the Brazilian horticulture segment. Sales have remained at only 260 thousand tons a year, representing just a little more than 1% of the
total production, if we consider the latest survey (19.2 million
tons in 2011), or even much less if cassava is included. In the
meantime, imports are three times bigger, and their figures have
not been changing much. Only the most imported product, Irish
potatoes, upwards of 90% prepared, represents an amount very
similar to the general exports of the sector.
After a slight increase in 2011, total exports of several Brazilian products receded again. Although factoring in cassava flour
and starch (more than 8.9 thousand tons), the amount is still
down 3.35% from the previous year. Shipments abroad amounted to 259.8 thousand tons, whilst revenue from the transactions
amounted to US$ 223.8 million. This total is also lower compared
to the previous year, when revenue reached US$ 226.7 million.
This result was obtained in spite of the shipment of bigger
volumes of melons, the flagship product among all exports, and
leader in foreign sales in the category of fruits. Shipments abroad
of this fruit, mostly produced in the Northeast, were up 7.19% in
volume and 4.49% in revenue, in 2012. Representing almost 70%
of the total destined for foreign markets, the 181.7 million tons of
38
melons sold over the year lag behind the 210 million tons shipped
abroad in 2088, when the economic downturn started in Europe,
a major buyer. This is why exporters are seeking new markets.
WEIGHTY
DIFFERENT ACCENTS
Expressive purchases of horticulture products from other countries have equally shown few changes, starting with the first on the
list, Irish potatoes. Imports of potatoes in 2012 remained on a par
with the previous year, that is to say, 252.7 thousand tons. The total
amount of vegetables purchased abroad reaches 782 thousand tons,
outstripping the previous number (772 thousand tons). The present estimation includes cassava, lentils, not duly taken into consideration
before, so that, if they remained excluded, a small decrease would
have taken place (-4%) in the entrance of vegetables from abroad.
Values spent on foreign purchases went down slightly, too, reaching US$ 793.7 million, but still expressive. Among the relevant items
that were imported, the least purchased ones in 2012 include onions
and garlic, respectively with a reduction of 15 thousand and 6 thousand tons. With regard to lentils, which rank fourth on that score,
there was a reduction of 2 thousand tons in imports. Tomatoes come
next and purchases from abroad were up 5.6 thousand tons from
the previous year, leading to the conclusion that the changes in the
Picture are not much representative. On the other hand, the positive
sign is that imports had already been decreased in the previous year,
which could signal a favorable trend to the sector.

National Supply Plan (PNA) proposes the creation
of a federal organ to articulate the actions of the
wholesale centers that operate in the sector
The construction of a new step, geared
toward strengthening and revitalizing the
distribution centers across the Country, is now
underway. Responsible for all wholesale operations of a huge part of all vegetables consumed
in Brazil, these units are the direct focus of the
National Supply Plan (NSP), presented last
August by the Brazilian Association of Distribution Centers (Abracen) to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA).
Among several specific points, the basic proposition is the creation of an organ capable of
articulating, at national level, all actions of the
so-called Ceasas, and the creation of a microstrategic directive for the sector.

A successful
recovery
Program intended to recover
the physical structure and
modernize the distribution
centers is one of the PNA
targets, recently presented
Among the specific proposals related to the National Supply Program (PNA, in the Portuguese acronym), mentioned in the previous
article, the highlight is the implementation of the Distribution Centers
Recovery Plan (Receasa). The idea is to upgrade the physical structure
that was built in the 1960s, fulfilling the specific demands of that time.
Now financing schemes are sought to transform the supply stations
into efficient product distribution warehouses and into centers focused on information needs, development, capacity building, quality control and support to small-scale farmers, small retailers and to
small food services, with the elimination of all possible distortions.
Joo Alberto Paixo Lages, president of Ceasa Minas, maintains that it is an excellent opportunity for revitalizing all distribution centers. Caio Rocha, secretary of Mapas Agricultural
Policy Division, in turn, highlights the evolving side represented
by the Receasa and by the new functioning model, which is more
efficient, more articulated, projected in compliance with the PNA
demands geared towards regional supply systems.
According to the plan, the adoption of a common language in terms of
quality, based on grading and traceability standards, comes as a solution
to more transparency and reliability in all trading operations. Within this
context, there are ideas about a best practices guide and a quality label,
adjustment of all packaging and box systems for waste reduction, the creation of a national technical assistance service, so as to make the family
farmers more competitive, and a national register of all farmers.
INFORMATION
A broader range of information is clearly stated in the development of the General Price Index of all
Horticulture products in the realm of the wholesale market (IGP-Hort Brasil) and in the introduction of the Information System
of the Brazilian Supply Markets (Simab), of Prohort. What is also highlighted is the projected operation-oriented Corporate University of the Distribution Centers System (Uniceasas), which is supposed to offer courses to sector agents.
Furthermore, the promotion of food and nutritional safety is vitally present in all proposals, particularly through Food
Supplying Stations, without overlooking the environmental question in all food supplying moves. And, although being a plan
deeply based on the wholesale market, it did not fail to point to the necessary value and the strength of important municipal markets and street fairs, aimed at providing for locally produced horticultural products, and graded in manner easily
understood by the local people.

joint efforts
Ibrahort and food distribution centers
advocate the insertion of more natural
products in Brazilian dietary habits
The presence of vegetables and other
natural products on the Brazilian dining
tables is lagging far behind of what is supposed to be a healthy diet. According to the
World Health Organization (WHO), ideally,
every person should eat at least 400 grams
of fruit, salads and legumes a day, but this
amount remains at 150 grams in Brazil. This
ascertainment is the driving force behind
the campaign now being implemented at
the distribution centers (Ceasas) in Brazil,
aimed at encouraging fruit consumption.
We still have a long way to go until we
achieve the target and our initiative intends
to speed up this journey, says Luciano
Vilela, representative of the Brazilian Horticulture Institute (Ibrahort) and member of
the coordinating group, and also president
of the Federal District Ceasa Entrepreneurs
Association, based in Braslia. In the federal capital the campaign was launched in
March 2013, at a meeting of the Brazilian Association of Distribution Centers (Abracen).
In late 2012, the matter was highlighted
at the meeting of the entity held in Porto
Alegre (RS). Within this context, all integrated units (some 50 of the 72 existing ones)
should launch the campaign locally. Besides
Abracen and Ibrahort, the working group
includes the Ministries of Education, Health,
Social Development and Hunger Fighting;
Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food
Supply (MAPA), and the National Supply
Company (Conab).
In 2012, both Ibrahort and Mapa had
published material under the slogan Eat
vegetables every day. Your health will be
thankful. Their intention is to intensify
AGAINST OBESITY Besides boosting businesses, all initiatives seek to fight the problems detected in Brazilian eating hab-
its. According to data released by the campaign, obesity has been making strides among Brazilian people, jumping from 18.5% to 50.1%
among males and from 28.7% to 48% among the women, from 1970 to 2009. In the meantime, and simultaneously, what occurred was a
reduction in the consumption of basic staples, and a higher share of ultra-processed foods.
What justifies the So Paulo project is the fact that, over the past years, by virtue of an array of technological innovations, people have
altered their dietary habits, with a considerable reduction in the consumption of fresh produce and, in turn, more consumption of industrialized products, with high contents of fat and additives. What captures the attention is the availability of huge amounts of high-calorie
items, low nutritional value and little diversity of foods.
To this end, public policies geared towards healthy diets are of vital importance, which is in fact a directive of the Ministry of Health.
Insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables is seen as a risk factor for non-transmissible chronic diseases, like cancer, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. Therefore, the above mentioned initiatives help ward off these diseases by providing the dinner tables
with diversified food staples, of high nutritional quality.

Children are the target of strategies intended to boost
fruit and vegetable consumption, with an almanac
developed by Embrapa, responsible for the area
All efforts towards boosting vegetable consumption in the Country are predominantly
focused on children. It is during childhood
that healthy eating habits are acquired, and
children frequently influence adults when it
comes to buying food items. Lots of initiatives are geared towards infants, like the
project, Communication strategies as tools
for encouraging children to consume vegetables, conducted by Embrapa Vegetables,
based in Braslia (DF).
The unit created the Horta & Lia almanac, now at its third edition, featuring comic
strips and pastimes that highlight the benefits
of healthy eating, in an amusing and attractive manner. The publication is given out to
schools and children who happen to visit
the research corporation. In 2012, 1,300 students visited the research facilities. According to Orbio de Oliveira, responsible for the

ON THE WEB
Embrapa Vegetables has also been stimulating the consumption of vegetables since 2009 through a project associated with waste
reduction. A series of primers gave rise to a book, 50 Vegetables how to purchase, preserve and consume, containing tips now posted
on site Vegetables Web, recently launched by the company.
Besides the 50 Vegetables section, the tool features other five spaces that give details about 150 recipes for all meals, best choice, use
and how to condition products and, of course, about the importance of daily intakes of vegetables. According to agronomic engineer
Milza M. Lana, researcher with Embrapa Vegetables, the objective consists in contributing towards a rise in consumption, with several
nutritional, practical and cheap preparation options.
The publicity material refers to the recommendations by the World Health Organization ( WHO) that a person should eat at least
three portions of vegetables a day (400 grams, including fruit). Currently, only 18.9% of all Brazilians comply with the WHO recommendations. A survey conducted by Esalq shows that the consumption of carotenes, essential for the body, is something like 4,117 micrograms a day, while recommended levels point to 9 to 18 thousand micrograms. Foods laden with this substance include tomatoes and
tomato derivatives, mango, carrot, acerola, caj, guava, papaya, pumpkin, lettuce, watercress, cabbage and corn.

Normative Instruction, published in February

brought a sigh of relief for the sector
Brazil once produced 90% of the garlic
consumed in the Country, but still senses the
ripple effects from imports coming from China. Nevertheless, the segment is seeking solutions and alternatives to recover its market
share. Now, the 10 thousand hectares devoted to garlic split into the regions of Gois,
Minas Gerais, Bahia, Santa Catarina ando
Grande do Sul represent only 33% of our
total domestic consumption. To make up for
the shortfall, garlic is imported from China
(42%) and from Argentina (25%).
According to Rafael Jorge Corsino, president of the National Association of Garlic
Producers (Anapa), consumption in Brazil
amounts to 2.2 million 10-kilogram boxes
a month, totaling 26.4 million boxes a year.
PUZZLE
In 2012, from data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the garlic crop in Brazil
amounted to 108,393 tons. Compared to 2011, the numbers represent a decrease of 24.35%.
During the period, the National Association of Garlic Producers (Anapa) observed a tangible improvement of the national production
volumes, Rafael Corsino, president of the entity, understands that several factors are credited with this scenario.
In the 2010/11 crop year, China, major global exporter and market indicator, registered its largest crop on record. In the following season, the 2011/12 cycle, the area devoted to garlic was down 10% due to erratic weather conditions. As a result, the Asian giant harvested
a 30-percent smaller crop, which brought national supplies into balance in 2012.
In 2013, prices have suffered only negligible fluctuations and the southern farmers, who sell their crop at the start of the year, are very
optimistic. This signals a similar panorama until July, says Corsino. From July onwards, the market should be followed closely and with
caution, as it is the time when the imports from the newly harvested crop in China are working their way into Brazil.

All across Brazil, potato crops comply with the needs and characteristics of every different region. According to a survey conducted in March by the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea), of the Luiz de Queiroz College of
Agriculture (Esalq), the harvest of the 2012/13 water crop in Tringulo Mineiro and Alto Paranaba, in Minas Gerais, was supposed to reach
its peak in March, with all activities starting in January. It is estimated that in March 40% of all fields in the region have been harvested.
In South Minas Gerais, the early December to early March cycle had practically come to a close. The planted area in Minas Gerais was
down 8% from the previous crop. For the 2013/14 cycle, initial estimations show no changes in the planted area.
In Paran, the dry crop, which was to have been completed in February, ended up going on until March in Curitiba, So Mateus do Sul,
Irati and Ponta Grossa. The delay in these regions in Paran is blamed on excessive precipitation levels. According to Cepea sources, there
were no disease outbreaks in the fields. As to the planted area, the four towns together will devote 7,207 thousand hectares to the crop.

Heavyweight
Although the crop is on a rising trend, Brazilian
sweet potato farming needs a push to promote
its development and create public perception
As a tropical plant, the trajectory of the
sweet potato ranges from one corner of the
world to the next. Originated in America,
now the great production environment is
located in Asia, where China is the leading
producer. In the meantime, the crops of this
vegetable have registered good volumes in
Brazil, recovering strength, as the 477.5
thousand tons in 2009 represented a decline from the previous periods.
In 2011, Brazils crop reached 544.8
ON THE RIGHT TRACK Researcher Wilson Roberto Maluf, of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), in Minas Gerais,
understands that the current numbers related to sweet potato crops still reflect the low level of technology at field level. He maintains that
there are several variables that still jeopardize the performance of sweet potatoes in our national territory.
Obsolete cultural practices, subsistence crops, disease-prone and inadequate cultivars; little use of available technologies, are just some
of the factors cited by Maluf as real obstacles in the development of the crop.
Even so, besides its use as human food in Brazil, per capita consumption is 2.7 kilograms, approximately, while the use of the vegetable as livestock food and for ethanol purposes has been rising in several regions. In Sergipe, the fifth biggest producer in the Country, for
example, the crop is a real source of income in some districts.
According to Maluf, recent data have attested that the use of appropriate cultural practices, along with the selection of recommended
high productive varieties make it possible to reap upwards of 50 tons per hectare, with chances to reach 100 tons. This would pave the
way for sweet potatoes to turn into raw material for the production of ethanol (in a real competition with sugar cane), besides generating
byproducts of low cost for livestock feed.

According to Daniel Rogrio Schmitt,
of the Santa Catarina State Rural Extension and Agriculture Research Corporation
(Epagri), Holland boasts the best onion
production, grading and packaging structure all over the world and, over the past
decade, the country has become the leading exporter, if the gross financial value is
considered. With an excellent warehousing and sales structure at the port of Rot-
terdam, the Dutch farmers manage to supply in a very fast manner several markets
in all continents, besides Europe, where the
supplier has its place of business, says the
agronomic engineer and market analyst.
While imports had a significant share
in the European market (Spain also came
forth as a major supplier), purchases from
Argentina decreased y 25%. This has made
imports from other countries decline 10%
in 2012, compared to the previous year,
Schmitt stresses.
STABILITY IN THE FIELD While the international scenario hinted at changes, onion farming in Brazil kept stable
throughout 2012. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), production reached 1.357 million tons, on a cultivated area of 57,346 hectares, with average yield remaining at 23,358 kg/ha, data related to the 2011 crop year.
According to Daniel Rogrio Schmitt, of Epagri, in the 2009 and 2010 cycles, production reached upwards of 1.5 million tons, but average
prices remained on a par with the production costs. This induced the farmers to reduce their plantations in the following two years. In 2012,
average prices were rather favorable, ranging from R$ 0.70 to R$ 1.45 for classes 3 (5 to 7 cm diameter bulbs), and there were no surpluses.
The sector is supposed to continue in a soaring mood in 2013. Relying on positive expectations, both farmers and leaderships
anticipate a good year. Over the first two months, for example, prices fetched by the growers looked promising, over R$ 1.00/kg, twice
as much as the production cost, Schmitt states.
With the good results in 2012, higher investments in production are expected, particularly in the Southeast, with chances for bigger
planted areas. According to a publication by the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea), there will also be more land
devoted to onions in the Cerrado region. Technicians estimate a 5-percent increase in Minas Gerais and Gois.

SAFRA ESTENDIDA
favorvel estendeu a safra at janeiro de 2013.

EXTENDED CROP
The winter cycle of the carrot crop in 2012 lasted from July 2012 to January 2013, with positive
results in the majority of the regions analyzed by the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea). The forecast
had been for the season to come to a close in December in the states of Minas Gerais and Paran, but the favorable climate
conditions extended the crop until January 2013. The total area amounted to 5,718 hectares, down 13.5% from 2011. Smaller
planted areas in the states of Bahia, Paran and Rio Grande do Sul are blamed for the smaller crop.
At the start of the season, prices were high, a result of the smaller supplies, brought about by area reductions and unfavorable
climate conditions at planting time. Nevertheless, as the crop progressed, higher volumes were offered, pressing prices down. On
the other hand, the remaining carrots of the 2012 winter season, still being harvested in early 2013, caused a 30-day delay to
the 2012/2013 summer crop in Minas Gerais and Paran. The growers delayed the harvest of the summer crop to prevent market
surpluses, according to the survey conducted by the Cepea.

A rea colhida teve

National tomato harvest expected to soar 2.88%
in 2013, marking the resumption of the previous
years volume of about 4 million tons
Brazilian consumers had to shell out
more money in 2012 for their tomato
salads and other dishes that contain this
ingredient. From March 2012 to February
2013, tomato prices increased by 74.82%,
according to the Consumer Price Index
(CPI), one of the indicators of the General
Price Index - Market (GPI-M), conducted
by the Getlio Vargas Foundation (FGV).
The higher prices of tomatoes and other
vegetables, especially in the first quarter of
the year, are seen as normal, given the rough
climate conditions, with excessive sunshine
and rainfall, explains economist Andr
Braz, of the Foundation, responsible for
the survey. From March onwards, he clarifies, climate conditions get back to normal,
supply goes up and prices begin to recede.
The trend in 2013 is for higher tomato
supplies. The crop was estimated at 3.769
million tons, up 2.88% from 2012. The forecast is made by the Systematic Agriculture
Production Survey (SAPS) department of
the Brazilian Institute of Geography and
Statistics (IBGE), released in February 2013.
The harvested area (60,872 hectares) and
planted area (60,876 hectares) represent
advances of 5.18% and 5.06%, respectively.
Nonetheless, average productivity rates are
projected at 61,933 kilos per hectare, down
82
of the same areas cultivated in other major producing regions, like the Southeast,
Center-West and South. The farmers did
not expand their cultivations by virtue of
the low prices fetched by the vegetable in
2010, Rodrigues argues.
Nonetheless, tight supplies in the market
pushed up farm gate prices, encouraging
the farmers to make investments in technology in 2013. This will certainly result into
higher yield and tomatoes of better quality,
both in appearance and taste, Rodrigues
comments. In his view, our national tomato
farming operations could improve even further in terms of productivity. With regard
to prices for the 2013 season, they should
remain on a par with 2012, without any tangible changes, benefiting both growers and
consumers, he anticipates. According to
ABCSEM sources, table tomato cultivations
generate about 300 thousand jobs a year.

INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH
The Brazilian industry-oriented tomato crop was estimated at
1.2 million tons in 2012, compared to the 1.6 million tons in the
previous year.Demand for this type of raw material has continued
steady, because sales of extracts and juices soar approximately 17%
a year, says entrepreneur Antonio Carlos Tadiotti, director of Predilecta Alimentos, in Mato (SP). The industry also purchases 60 to 70
tons of tomato paste, especially from Chile and China.
Tadiotti explains that the area devoted to industrial toma-
Slvio vila
In Brazil, tomato farming is split into table tomatoes and tomatoes destined for industrial processing. Both present distinct characteristics, including different management practices. Industrial tomatoes, for example, are rather
bushy plants with the fruits growing close to the ground, a sweetish flavor, elongated shape and with few seeds. In fairs and sales
outlets they are also known as Italian tomatoes. The fruits are the raw material for tomato industries, where they are transformed
into cream sauce, puree, extract and catchup.
In 2012, the industrial tomato sector suffered a reduction of 25% in the volume of the crop, mainly because of bad weather problems. The segment runs businesses that amount to R$ 2.6 billion a year. The situation in 2012 could have been much more serious
if there had not been huge carryover stocks from the previous cycle, says Antonio Carlos Tadiotti, director of Predilecta Alimentos,
in Mato (SP). Tomatoes are planted until May, and harvest takes place from June to September.
According to Tadiotti, in 2013, recently planted tomato fields were seriously affected by incessant rains in the Center-West and
Southeast. The crop to be harvested in July has already suffered 20% losses, because it rained too much in march, at planting time,
he explains. In his view, over the last days in March, weather conditions improved a little, but with hardly any chances for the crop
to make a good recovery in the following months. Chances for making up for the losses are likely to materialize in August and
September, through processing maximization, and when tomato harvest is in full swing, he comments.

farmer desires. Focused on this premise,
Extratus Compostos Orgnicos develops
fertilizers that boost the development of
farms located in South Brazil. Based in
the city of Garibaldi, at the foot of the
Gaucho Sierra, the company provides the
growers with alternative fertilizers that
impart benefits to the crops. One of the
benefits is the improvement of soil health,
once compound organic matter mingles
with soil particles, helping with retaining moisture levels and, at the time, with
drainage and aeration systems.
Extratus has been involved in organic
residue processing operations since 2010,
and its output reaches approximately one
thousand tons of fertilizers a month, says Felipe Hahn da Silva, technician in charge. He
explains that the raw material is shipped to
the company by partner companies, including meat packing industries, paper industries, wineries and tobacco companies.
Besides the advantages derived by the
crops, the destination of organic waste by
the companies results into environment
preservation, pollution minimization,
whilst ensuring sustainable development.
By correctly utilizing this material, a solution is on the way for a huge environmental problem, says Silva.
The organic compound also improves
soils water infiltration capacity, thus
reducing erosion; it favors the survival

PRODUCTION
With a production process that lasts for 10 to 12 months, the formulation of the organic fertilizer carries sawdust and incubator waste, grape bagasse, tobacco dust, egg-laying hen manure, sludge from meat processing and ash. The composting
process takes place inside the pavilions, with a total area of 10,800 square meters under roof and a capacity for 2.5 thousand tons a month..
Before being packed, the compound goes through different stages. After receiving the waste from the companies, ridges are made. Then
the material is kept in the pavilion, under controlled temperature, moisture and aeration levels, along with PH and degree of maturation.
Finally, the ridges are revolved and the material is sifted. This type of fertilizer is sold in sacks or in bulk.
The input produced by Extratus is inspected and approved by Ecocert Brazil, ensuring its certification as an appropriate organic
