What Sites Do Teens Visit For Music and Videos?
Alison Bastianelli
Kim Charney
Allie Cowhy As teens spend more and more time online, listening to music and
Nicole Fields watching online videos consistently rank in their top three online
Allison Fleming activities. More than half of teens (52%) report listening to MP3s in
Mallory Gebauer a given week, with an average listening time of more than four

Kelsey Goeschel While the majority of teens might be visiting sites like iTunes and
Natalie Hoist Rhapsody to legally download and listen to music, many teens are
Alex Jedrzejczak still visiting illegal music-sharing sites that violate intellectual prop-

Hannah Meyers YouTube, a video sharing site where users can upload, view, and share video clips, is one
Michelle Painter of teens’ four favorite and most visited sites (along with Google, MySpace, and Face-
Tessa Palmateer book). Other than recommended guidelines, there are no barriers to what content is por-
Autumn Schade trayed in those videos or who can view them. For example, if a teen were to go to You-
Annie Taylor Tube and search for “drug”-related videos, the top 10 search returns have almost 47 mil-
lion views. The top-10 “marijuana”-related videos on YouTube have almost 30 million
views. The top-10 “weed”-related videos on YouTube have been viewed almost 25 million
times. And the top-10 “cocaine”-related videos on YouTube have been viewed about 25
million times.
Teens can also create, star in, and upload the content on video-sharing and music
download sites. For example, the video networking site with the highest concentration of
12-17-year-olds is Stickam.com, a hub for Webcams of people in their bedrooms.

about what to do if they are bullied.

These sites expose teens to the world. They enable teens to access people living
anywhere in the U.S. or in foreign countries, as well as their peers from
school. It’s a place where they can create and showcase who they are
and also keep tabs on all of their friends. Unless under a hidden view or

setting, profile pages are open for all to see. But most of all, teens love
social networking sites because it’s their space. There is a sense of
empowerment attached to controlling a piece of their own world… and
this is typically a world where parents are not present.

What Are The Warning Signs Of Cell

Phone Misuse?
As a parent, you’ll be able to tell if your teen is misusing his/her cell
phone by the amount of time they are spending text messaging their
friends. Do they run to answer the phone/text, then hide out to respond
to it? Do you catch them talking or texting late at night or at times when they said they
would be doing something else?
What can you do? Check your phone bill. Most companies can provide an itemized list of
incoming and outgoing calls and text messages on your monthly statements. Make sure
you recognize the numbers on your statement, and if you don’t, ask your teen to identify
them.
