BACKGROUND
Innovative technologies in managing marginal salt
affected lands merit immediate attention in view of
climate change and its impact on crop productivity
and environment.
The management of degraded land and water
resources on sustainable basis offers an opportunity
for horizontal expansion of agricultural area in the
country. During the last more than three decades, a
number of packages to ameliorate different kinds of
marginal lands (including salt affected areas) and
poor quality waters have been developed. These
technologies got wide support from the policy-makers
as well as from farming community through the
concerted efforts of all concerned. As such, over 1.3
million ha salt affected lands have been reclaimed
and put to productive use in India. It has been
estimated that reclaimed area is contributing more
than 8 million tons food grains to the national pool.
However, in future there will be many emerging areas
of research needing urgent attention of the scientific
community engaged in management of salt affected
soils and water research. We need to be prepared for
the future challenges right from today. The
challenges will be tackled smoothly if we have trained
and technologically updated manpower available in
the country. Thus, CSSRI at RRS, Lucknow is
organizing a Short Course Training on Advanced
Techniques for Bio-remediation and Management of
Salt Affected Soils. This training programme will
focus on the issues of strategic relevance in marginal
land and water reclamation research. These issues
include reclamation and management of marginal salt
affected lands in future context, with limited
resources and with new tools, and will mainly focus
on challenges and solutions for tackling these
problems.
