Bismillah-ir-Rahmaan-ir-Raheem!
This Hajj booklet is essentially the English translation and adaptation
from the Hajj handout of Mr. Khalil-ur-Rahman Chishti of Al Fawz
Academy, Islamabad, Pakistan. I found the Handout very useful, to the
point and self explanatory, like most of his work. However it was in Urdu
which I have ventured to put in English. My sincerest gratitude to Chishti
Sahib and Minhas Sahib (Muhammad Khan Minhas) for their guidance
and support. I have included some pictures and pages with adaptation of
the book "Tell me about Hajj" by Saniyasnain Khan of Goodword for kids.
Their Hajj at a Glance and the glossary of Hajj are specially helpful. I
would like to thank them for giving me permission to use their work.
Several attempts were made to contact the publishers of Hajj & Umrah
made easy by Taqi Hashmi and Adnan Malik published by Al Hidaayah
publishing and 'Hajj & 'Umrah from A to Z' by Mamdouh N Mohamed Dar
Eshbella publishing. We regret that we did not receive any responses
from either. All reproductions / adaptations from the above booklets have
been made in good faith with the intention of dawah.
I have tried to catch the spirit of Hajj from the book 'How to perform Hajj'
by Amira Ehsan. My thanks to her also for allowing me to do so. Anyone
going for Hajj must read her book. It awakens the soul!
I would also like to thank all the people involved in the making of this
booklet. Special thanks to my husband for his constant support in all my
work. Jazaa-hum-ul-laahu khaira!
I have been asked to include a question and answer section in this book. I
regret that I have not been able to do so as it is beyond the scope of this
booklet. However, I would advise my readers to read "Getting the Best
Out of Al-Hajj" by Abu Muneer Ismail Davids. He has dealt with multiple
questions in his book. I strongly recommend that those who intend to go
for 'Umrah and Hajj must read the relevant chapters from Saheeh Al
Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim. The person should also read the detailed
description of Prophet Muhammad (S)'s Hajjatul Wadaa from Saheeh
Muslim. There will always be questions, inspite of all the reading and
preparation. That is where learn to apply the golden rule (Abu Muneer
Ismail David). "What did the Prophet (S) say, do or did not do".
In addition to the above, ask the religious scholars around you. Seek help
from Allaah and your questions will be answered, Insha-Allaah!
This is a humble effort from a servant of Allaah. May He accept it and
make it a means of my salvation. I beg His forgiveness for my short
comings and for any mistakes that I might have made. My prayers are for
all the above people, my teachers, parents, children, family and the
Muslim Ummah. May Allaah SWT forgive our sins and Bless us with
Jannatul Firdaws and His meeting. Aameen!

Introduction
Pilgrimage comes in two forms, the greater pilgrimage or Hajj and the
lesser pilgrimage or 'Umrah. Hajj is an enjoined duty, a once in a lifetime
obligation upon those sane adult Muslims who can physically and
financially afford it. It is one of the Pillars of Islam.
Soorah 3 Aal-i-'Imraan, V-97, Allaah Swt says Hajj to the House
(Ka'bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allaah, for those who can afford
the journey, and whoever disbelieves (i.e. denies Hajj) then (know that)
Allaah does not stand in need of any of His creatures!
Hajj has been called the sum total of all worship. The benefit that is
obtained from each worship individually are all combined together in
Hajj. The successful Hajj is one that connects an individual to his
Creator and teaches him to appreciate and acquire the spirit behind
the rituals of salah (prayer), zakah (obligatory alms), Sawm (fast) and
sacrifice.
The journey of Hajj is the most important trip of ones life and it must be
treated as such. Yet, we are so engrossed in our worldly affairs that we
barely make any preparations for it. Even when we do, our planning is
usually limited to the physical aspect of Hajj (which is important, no
doubt), totally ignoring its "essence" and spiritual aspect.
Allaah Swt says in Soorah 2, Al Baqarah, V-197: "Take necessary
provisions with you (for the journey), but indeed, the best provision is
Taqwaa." It is this taqwaa or piety that is the ultimate provision needed
at every step of this trip. This Taqwaa of ours needs to be guarded
closely at all times, for our all time enemy shaitaan is waiting in
ambush, to steal away our most precious possession. Beware! Do not
let your defences down, do not let shaitaan creep in and deprive you of
even the T of Taqwaa. Hold on to your 'patience' for dear life. Make
Allaah Swt the focal point of every action, asking for His help constantly.
Inshaa Allaah, He will help!
Prophet Muhammad (S) performed only one Hajj, after his migration to
Madinah, and that was Hajjatul wadaa or the farewell Hajj. He died a
couple of months later. He taught the Muslim Ummah the Hajj rituals by
his sayings and deeds and said, Take (learn) from me your rituals- - - - - - (Muslim 3197). Thus we must follow the Prophet (S)'s example if we
wish to perform Hajj properly. Allaah Swt said in Soorah 59 Al Hashr, V7, - - - - - - -whatever the Messenger (Muhammad (S)) gives you, take it,
and whatever he forbids you, abstain (from it) - - - - - - - - "
And He says in Soorah 4. An-Nisa, V-80
"He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad (S)) has indeed obeyed
Allaah:"
ii
Patience
And in Soorah 33, Al-Ahzaab, V-21
"Indeed, in the Messenger of Allaah (Muhammad (S)) you have the
'Best Model' to follow for him who hopes in (the meeting with) Allaah and
the Last Day, and remembers Allaah abundantly."
Muslims try their best to re-enact the final pilgrimage of Prophet
Muhammad (S) who in turn followed the foot-steps of his ancestors
Ibraaheem A.S and Ismail A.S, commemorating their struggle. The
advent of Hajj unfolds some 4000 years back. The story begins with
Prophet Ibraaheem who was born in B.C 1861 in Ur, Iraq to an idol
worshipper named Azar. Ibraaheem A.S was 'gracious and tender
hearted and not a mushrik,' turning away from idol worship. His quest
for the truth and the One True God is beautifully expressed in Soorah 6
Al An'aam, V: 75-79.
"And when Ibraaheem said to his father Azar, 'are you taking idols for
gods? Surely I see you and your people in manifest error.'
We showed Ibraaheem the kingdom of the heavens and earth, so he
became one of the firm beleivers. When the night drew its shadow over
him, he saw a star and said 'this is my Rabb' but, when it set he said 'I do
not love (to worship) that which fades away."
After the same experience with the moon and sun, Ibraaheem A.S
announced, 'I will turn my face, being upright, to Him Who has created
the heavens and earth, and I am no idolator!'
The Quraan also speaks in S. 21, Al Anbiya V: 58-71 about the incident
when Ibraaheem A.S took an axe and broke all the idols in the public
temple, except the biggest one. "The people asked him, who has done
this?' He calmly replied, ask the biggest idol. Lowering their heads,
they replied you know fully well that they do not speak! "(Ibraaheem)
said, do you then worship besides Allaah things that can neither benefit
nor harm you? Shame on you and on those deities you worship besides
Allaah! Have you no sense at all? They said, burn him and avenge your
gods! (When they threw him in the fire), We commanded O fire! Be cool
and (a means of) safety for Ibraaheem. They sought to harm him, but
We made them the big losers, and delivered him and (his nephew) Lut,
and directed them to the land which We have blessed for all the people
of the world."
Thus started the travels of Ibraaheem A.S. He left his home, parents,
country and travelled to Syria, Palestine and Egypt to serve his One
True God.
Ismail A.S. was born to an aging Ibraaheem A.S (86 years old) and
Hajirah R.A. (His wife Sarah bore him his second son Ishaaaq A.S much
later) Prophet Ibraaheem A.S. was tested once again. He travelled far to
the barren valley of Makkah. Here near 2 small hills, Safaa and
iii
Patience
Marwah, Ibraaheem A.S. was commanded to leave his wife Hajirah R.A.
and child Ismail A.S. So he left them alone, obeying his Lord. Later, as
the child cried with thirst, mother Hajirah ran frantically between the two
hills looking for water. This act of motherly concern was so liked by
Allaah Swt that it was made an integral part of Hajj, called Sa'ee. The
miraculous well of Zam Zam water gushed forth from where the heels of
little Ismail had rubbed / hit the sand. Soon the barren valley became an
oasis and was inhabited. Allaah does not let his obedient servants
perish!
The trials of Ibraaheem A.S continue. Soorah 37 As Saaffaat, V:99-109
speaks of the greatest trial of all when he (Ismail A.S.) reached the age
to work with him, (Ibraaheem A.S.) said, O my son! I have seen a vision
that I should offer you as a sacrifice. Now tell me what is your view.' He
replied, O my father! Do as you are commanded, you will find me, if
Allaah so wills, of the patient!' And when they both submitted to Allaah
and (Ibraaheem) laid down his son prostrate upon his forehead for
sacrifice, We called out to him, 'O Ibraaheem, stop! You have fulfilled
your vision! Thus do We reward the righteous. That was indeed a
manifest test. We ransomed his son for a great sacrifice and We left his
good name among the later generation. Salutations to Ibraaheem!"
It is this act of sacrifice of father and son that is remembered as one of
the rites of Hajj. Allaah Swt does not require the flesh and blood of
animals (S-22, V-37) much less of human being; but He does want us
to give of our entire being to Allaah, especially that which is dear and
near to us, if and when the need arises. That spirit of sacrifice is what we
need to re-live and re-awaken in our soul and bring back from Hajj!
The stoning (ramee) of the three pillars in Mina is to remember the act of
Ibraaheem A.S casting stones at shaitaan. When Ibraaheem A.S was
taking his son Ismail A.S to the place of sacrifice, shaitaan tempted him
at three different places, trying to talk him out of carrying out the
Command. Here again, we must learn the lesson and not simply throw
stones at the cement pillars, but also at the shaitaans within us that try
to stop us from the obedience of Allaah Swt.
Allaah Swt says in S-2, Al-Baqarah V:127-129 And remember
Ibraaheem and Ismail as they raised the foundation of the House
praying, 'Our Rabb, accept (this service) from us, indeed You are the All
Hearing, All Knowing. O our Rabb, make us both Muslims (submissive
to you) and make our descendants a nation that will be Muslim
(submissive to You). Show us our rites of worship and accept our
repentance, surely You are The Acceptor of Repentance, The All
Merciful. O our Rabb, appoint from among them a Rasul who shall
recite to them your Revelations and teach them the Book and the
Wisdom and purify them. Surely, You are The All Mighty, The All Wise!
In verse 125 of the same Soorah, Allaah says, "Take the station of
iv
Patience
Ibraaheem as a place of prayer". Thus Allaah rewarded Ibraaheem A.S.
by making his station, his footprints as a place of prayer for all times.
The verse continues, "We entrusted Ibraaheem and Ismail to cleanse
Our House for those who walk around it, who meditate in it and who
kneel and prostrate in prayers."
In S-22 Al Hajj, V:27 Allaah commands Ibraaheem A.S to proclaim the
Hajj. O Ibraaheem make a proclamation of Hajj to mankind; they will
come to you on foot and on lean camels from every distant quarter, so
that they may witness the benefits which are made available here for
them..." Thus, the invitation to His House was sent out to all of mankind
by Allaah via His friend Ibraaheem A.S. To this day, mankind is
responding to that call with 'Labbaik Allaahumma Labbaik..........'
Here I am, O Allaah here I am!
It is believed that the millions of pilgrims who make Hajj each year, fulfil
the supplication and the call of Prophet Ibraaheem A.S. In reality, Hajj
celebrates this Prophet who is called the 'father of faith' (22:78) and the
'friend of Allaah' (4:125). Prophet Ibraaheem A.S and his son Ismail A.S.
were the first ones to perform the Hajj rites. However some generations
down the line, the descendants of Ismail A.S. went off track and turned
away from the practice of belief and worship of The One True God.
They began worshipping idols and turned the Ka'bah into a place of idol
worship. Prophet Muhammad (S) was commanded by Allaah to reclaim His House for His worship Alone and to cleanse it of all the idols.
Thus, the original rites of Ibraaheem A.S was restored and are in the
practice of Hajj to this day, taught to us by Prophet Muhammad (S).
I hope that this peek into the flash-back or back-ground of Hajj will help
the pilgrims understand the spirit behind the rituals of Hajj. Our
Pilgrimage can be a means of our salvation. Remember, you are the
"Guests of Rahman!" Be deserving of that honor and act like a good
guest. Make a commitment not to complain, come what may! Put on the
cloak of "patience" and when things are not going right, think of the
difficulties of the pilgrims of only a hundred years ago and say,
"Alhamdulillah!"
My prayers are for all the Pilgrims. May Allaah Swt accept all our efforts
and bless us with Jannatul Firdaws. Ameen!

First Day: 8th Dhul Hijjah: Put on Ihraam again, and declare ones intention of
performing Hajj. Perform Tawaaf of the Ka'bah and Sa'ee, if not performed
earlier. Leave for Mina early in the morning, reciting talbiyah. Stay overnight in
Mina. Prayers are shortened (Qasr) in Mina. This day is known as Yawm AlTarwiyah, or the Day of Reflection.
Second Day: 9th Dhul Hijjah: Go to Arafah and say the Zuhr and Asr prayers
together, combined and shortened (Jama' wa Qasr)
Stand here with devotion, noon to sunset, praying and asking Allaah's
forgiveness. This act is known as Wuqoof, or standing. This day is known,
therefore, as Yawm Al-Wuqoof, or the Day of Standing. In the evening move
towards Muzdalifah and say the Magrib and Ishaa prayers together combined
and shortened. Rest there at night, and collect small pebbles for the stoning in
Mina. Make Du'aa at Masharul Haraam, if possible.
Third Day: 10th Dhul Hijjah: Go to Mina and throw small stones there at
Jamratul Aqabah, the largest pillar. Sacrifice an animal. Have the hair of the
head shaved or trimmed and then remove Ihraam.
Go to Makkah and perform Tawaaf al-Hajj. Go back and forth between Safaa
and Marwah (sa'ee), then return to Mina. This day is called Yawm An-Nahr, or
the Day of Sacrifice. (Eid Day).
Fourth Day: 11th Dhul Hijjah: Stay in Mina and throw pebbles at all three
Jamaraat. This day and the next two days are called Ayyam-ut-Tashreeq, which
literally means, "the days of drying meat." Read Quraan, do dhikr, Recite
Takbeer.
Fifth Day: 12th Dhul Hijjah: Stay in Mina and throw pebbles at all three of the
Jamaraat. Spend time in Dhikr, Takbeer etc. Leave Mina before sunset.
Note: Those unable to leave Mina for Makkah on 12th Dhul Hijjah should stay at
Mina for one more night. The next day, on 13th Dhul Hijjah, after pelting the
three stoning pillars with stones, they should leave for Makkah in the afternoon.

TAWAAF : THE SUNNAH WAY
1)
One must be in a state of Wudu for Tawaaf (if Wudu breaks during
Tawaaf, then one must stop and make a fresh Wudu. (Menstruating
women cannot do Tawaaf.)
2)
Sunnah for men to bare the right shoulder and have the Ihraam over
the left shoulder in the first three rounds, in Tawaaf-i-Qudum (arrival)
or Tawaaf of 'Umrah only. This act is called Idtabaa (for men only). Abu

4)
5)
6)
7)
8)
The first three rounds of Tawaaf Qudum (arrival) is done with fast
strides (Ramal), the remaining four are completed in normal strides
(Bukhari 1602) Prophet (S) did not do Ramal in any of the rounds of
Tawaaf-i-Ziyaarah / Hajj.
9)
10)
Seven circles are mandatory around the Ka'bah. Walk around the
Hateem, not through it. If forget count, better to do more rather than
less. (Use counting beads)
11)
Sunnah to recite, "Rabbana aatina fid-duniya Hasanah, wa filaakhirati Hasanah wa qina 'adhaab-an-naar," (2:201) between
Rukn-i-Yamaani and Al Hajr-i- Aswad (Saheeh Abu Dawood 1666).

16)
Perform two rakah of nafl prayer there. In case of rush, the prayer may
be performed behind it, anywhere in the Masjid. (Be patient, keep
cool. Allaah is Watching!)
Sunnah to recite Soorah Al-Kaafirun in the first rakah after S. Al
Fatihah and Soorah Al-Ikhlaas in the second rakah (Tirmidhi).
17)
18)
Sunnah to drink Zam Zam water and sprinkle some on the head after 2

all the Praise, and He has Power over all things. None has the right to be
worshipped but Allaah Alone. He fulfilled His promise, and aided His
servant, and defeated the clans (of disbelievers) by Himself.
Thereafter, the person should make any supplications that he wishes
while still raising his hands and standing facing the Ka'bah. Upon
completing his supplications, he should descend from Mount As-Safaa
and begin walking towards Al-Marwah. At Al-Marwah the person should
ascend the hill, face the Ka'bah and repeat thrice the Takbeer and the
du'aa mentioned previously as he did while on Mount As-Safaa. He
should continue going back and forth between the two hills a total of
seven times. Going from one hill to the other is counted as one trip.

Wudu
(if not wearing Ihraam already).
2) Niyyah (aloud) for Hajj after 2 rakah prayers (Prophet (S) made His
niyyah after fard prayer). Ihraam restriction begin after niyyah. Start
chanting the Talbiyah - Labbaik, Allaahuma-----
3) Leave for Mina (Mustahabb to walk). Sunnah to pray the Zuhr

DAY 2: 9TH DHUL HIJJAH - (MINA TO ARAFAH APPROX 9 KM)
Mina
1) After sunrise and Fajr prayer leave Mina for the plain of Arafah.
Arafah (Climax of Pilgrimage): "The Hajj is Arafat" (Tirmidhi)
2) Try to reach Masjid Nimrah by noon. Imaam gives the Hajj Khutbah
there. If it is crowded, stay anywhere in Arafah. Be sure that you are
within the boundaries of Arafah. Part of Masjid Nimrah is not within
the boundaries of Arafat.
3) Zuhr and Asr prayers with one Adhan and two Iqaamah are
combined and shortened (Jama' & Qasr; Rakah 2+2, Muslim
1218). This can be performed in the group tent in congregation if not
possible to go to Masjid Nimrah. It is preferable to follow the
Sunnah. (Do what the group does, to avoid fitnah. Do not fight).
Imaam Abu Hanifa disagrees on combining the Zuhr + Asr prayers.
4) Wuqoof Arafah is Fard (Standing at Arafah) this is also known as
Yawm-i-Arafah and Rukn-i-Azam or the Greatest Pillar of Hajj.
Du'aa of the day (which Prop. Muhammad (S) and other prophets
before him said) is "Laa ilaaha illal - Laahu wahdahu la shareeka
lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul Hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shai-in
Qadeer." (Muslim).
None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah Alone, with out
partner. To Him belongs all praise and sovereignty and He is over all
things Omnipotent (Bukhari & Muslim).
Praise Allaah, ask for forgiveness and guidance, make repentance
and du'aa for all, family, friends, Ummah and mankind.
5) Wuqoof may be done on the Jabal-i-Rahmat (where Prophet (S)
gave his last sermon) or near it, or anywhere in the plain of Arafah.
Hadeeth (Muslim 1218):
"I stand here, but the whole of Arafat is a standing place."
Hadeeth (Muslim, Kitaabul Hajj): There is no other day on which
more people are liberated from the fire, than the day of Arafah.
Time of Wuqoof: Noon to sunset.
This is the day of forgiveness and the Pilgrims should humbly
repent in front of their Rabb. Let sincere tears wash your sins.
Do not return empty handed!
It is the most important day of ones life. Do not waste even a
second. ShaiTaan tempts with sleep & tiredness - beware!
22
Patience
O My servant who have transgressed against themselves, do not
despair from the Mercy of Allaah. Indeed Allaah forgives all sins. He
is the Most Forgiving, The All Merciful (S. Az-Zumar 39, V-53)
6) After maghrib, without doing the prayer, leave Arafah for
Muzdalifah where Maghrib will be performed (Muslim). (Rules have
been changed. Worship is to obey Allaah SWT and not following the
habit of a ritual. Essence of submission is obedience, not logic! )
7) Enroute to Muzdalifah is the valley of Muhassar or Naar (where the
army of elephant was destroyed. S.105, Al-Feel); cross it hastily.
8) Talbiyah should be chanted on the way as much as possible.
9) On reaching Muzdalifah, the Maghrib & Ishaa prayers are
performed together (Jama & Qasr = 3+2+Witr) even if one reaches
late at night. The night is spent in Muzdalifah, in worship and sleep.
Prophet (S) slept there till Fajr prayer. Do dhikr and du'aa. Stones
for stoning the Jamarah may be picked from here or Mina.
Hadeeth (Muslim 1218): "I am standing here, but the whole of
Muzdalifah is a place of standing."
PILLARS (ARKAAN) OF HAJJ: FARD
The pillars of Hajj are the rites that are compulsory for the validity and
completion of the Hajj. If missed, re-do Hajj.

DAY 3: 10TH DHUL HIJJAH - YawmM AN-NAHR: DAY OF SACRIFICE
(Islamic day begins after maghrib, not midnight)
Muzdalifah
1) Wuqoof of Muzdalifah is Waajib.
2) Time of Wuqoof : Till just before the sun comes out.
3) After Fajr prayer, come to Mashar Al Haram - The sacred monument in
Muzdalifah where Prophet (S) stopped during his Hajj. (S.2 Al Baqarah
V-198). If not possible to go there, any place in Muzdalifah will do. Face
the Qiblah and make Talbiyah (saying Labaik...), Tahleel (Saying: Laa
ilaha illal laahu...), Takbeer (saying Allaahu Akbar), Istighfaar and
Du'aa.
4) The Fajr prayer should be performed in its early time in Muzdalifah.
5) Before leaving Muzdalifah, gather small stones (Pea or Date stone
size) 7 for the 1st day, (+21+21+21 for the next 2-3 days) for each
person. Stones can be picked from Mina too. NEVER pick up the
pebbles from the location of the Jamaraat. (Keep extra pebbles)
6) Leave Muzdalifah for Mina chanting the Talbiyah on the way (try to do
this trip on foot, with a group so that you do not get lost).
(Drinking water or ORS - oral rehydration solution will keep your
energy up. Patients with salt restriction, use it with care).
7) Enroute to Mina recite Talbiyah as often as possible. Praise Allaah and
do Dhikr. A pedestrian path leads from the masjid in Muzdalifah to the
Jamrah in Mina.
Mina
8) Talbiyah should stop on the 10th Dhul Hijjah on starting Ramee
(Bukhari).
9) On entering Mina it is Waajib to do Ramee - Stoning of only one Jamrah
i.e. Aqabah (the largest pillar) with 7 Pebbles (one by one), reciting
'Allaahu Akbar' with each one (Bukhari). Pebbles must fall inside the
Jamrah fence, otherwise throw again.
10) Sunnah to do Ramee before noon. It can be done till sunset, if need be.
Care must be taken not to hurt others in ones zeal of throwing stones at
shaitaan. This act commemorates the stone throwing of Ibraaheem
A.S when shaitaan tried to tempt him against sacrificing his son.
11) Ramee (the symbol of stoning shaitaan) may be done by women, the
sick and the old after sunset too, or before the prescribed time.
(Bukhari). In case of difficulty someone else can do it for them or
Ramee by proxy. Jabir-Ibn Majah. (Note: One must do own Ramee first
and then for others).
12) Qurbaani / Sacrifice is Waajib (not for one doing Hajj Ifraad), (S. 22 AlHajj V:28,36). Sunnah to do Qurbaani on the 10th after Ramee. It may
be done personally or via an authorised agency. ( 'It is not their meat
nor their blood that reaches Allaah, it is your piety that reaches Him'24
Patience
22:37). It may be done on the 11th or 12th if not done earlier.
13) Hair cutting, trimming or shaving is Waajib 'And shave not your heads
until the gifts (Qurbaani) have reached their destination' (2:196).
Shaving is preferable for men (Prophet made Du'aa for them three
times. Muslim). (Shaving head symbolizes a return to a pure , baby like
state devoid of any sin, a new beginning).
Women are not to shave their heads (Abu Dawood) they are to clip
finger tip length of strands of hair (Al Mughni Ibn Quddaamah Hanbali).
14) The Ihraam can be taken off after the above. The Ihraam restrictions
are over and one can clip nails, and wear regular (decent) stitched
clothes. However, sex restrictions remain till Tawaaf Ziyaarah is
completed.
MINA TO MAKKAH (DAY III CONTD)
10TH DHUL HAJJ OR EID UL AZHA.
15) Tawaaf Ziyaarah (visit) (also called T. Hajj or Ifaadah) is fard and
preferable to do it on the 10th Dhul Hijjah, but may be done till the 12th
Dhul Hijjah, prior to sunset.
This is also an important pillar of Hajj like that of Arafah
16) If for any reason, the Qurbaani or Tawaaf Ziyaarah was not possible
on the 10th, then do it on the 11th or 12th preferably before Zuhr prayer.
17) Sa'ee between the Mt Safaa and Marwah is Waajib with Tawaaf
Ziyaarah. (If Sa'ee was done with T.Qudoom of H.Qiraan, then it is not
needed now). After its completion, one should return to Mina from
Makkah, before sunset.
MAKKAH TO MINA
18) The pilgrims are to spend the nights in Mina. They should not waste
time and continue their connection with their Rabb by doing Dhikr,
Takbeer, Du'aa, Istighfaar and reciting the Quraan (S - 2, V - 203)

sunrise, and after that (i.e. on the 11, 12 and 13th of Dhul Hijjah) when the

4)
During the stoning of the first two places it is sunnah to say, 'AllaahuAkbar'
. After stoning, turn towards Qiblah, raise hand and do
Du'aa. (Face Qiblah from the right of the small pillar and left of the
medium pillar). (Bukhari).
5)
During the stoning of the 3rd Jamratul Aqabah one should also say

(DAY 6) - MUSTAHIBB - DESIRABLE
1) Stay at Mina on the 13th is Mustahibb - desirable (extra credit)
it is not obligatory, (S - 2, Al Baqarah V - 203)
2) Ramee (stone casting, vowing to eliminate the influence of
shaitaan from ones life) must be done at all 3 Jamaraat.
3) Rest of the time must be spent in Takbeer - Allaahu Akbar, TahleelLaa ilaaha illal-Laah, Tagdis - SubHaan Allaah; Tamhid-AlHamdu
Lillaah, and other Dhikr and Quraan recitation, and Du'aa and
Astaghfaar.
4) One must leave Mina before sunset.
5) Tawaaf Wadaa should be performed before leaving Makkah unless
unable due to some problem. No sa'ee after Tawaaf Wada or
farewell Tawaaf.
6) The Quraan says about the transformation that should take place
in the nature of the Pilgrim on completing the Pilgrimage. So when
you have accomplished your rites, celebrate the praises of Allaah
as you used to celebrate the praises of your fathers (lineage), yet,
with far more heart and soul ....' (S - 2, V - 200).

GENERAL TIPS
s
Sabr is the first and foremost quality needed. Hajj is not just a set of
rituals. It is about giving rights of fellow pilgrims and sacrificing ones
own 'nafs'. It is a training process to make us into better
indiviDu'aals, learning to live with other people peacefully. If we do
not learn this lesson then our Hajj will remain incomplete.
This is a great opportunity to clean the slate of own's life. Make the
best of it. Change every act of yours into ibadaah - worship, by
doing it the Sunnah way. Your eating, drinking, sleeping can all
became acts of worship if it is done in the way of our beloved
Prophet (S).
Start from home with a clean state, with no bad feelings towards
anyone, specially relatives. It will help in attaining taqwaa.
Get vaccinated well ahead of time. Keep the vaccination card with
your passport, travellers cheques, money etc. Make sure your
passport is valid. Obtain all required visas, keep some extra
photos.
Rest well before doing 'Umrah, both Tawaaf and Sa'ee can be
tiring. Take care of yourself so your 'ibadah can be better.
Sleeping bags may be helpful for Mina or you can buy mats locally
at Makkah. Some tents now provide mattresses / beds.
Drink plenty of water, laban (yogurt drink) and juice. Keep a balance
between drinking enough and not having to go to the bathroom too
much. Do not eat too much.
Patience
s
Keep identification on you at all times. Hang I.D card around your
neck and wear I.D band on wrist. Keep copy of passport.
Know when the bathrooms are cleaned and use them accordingly.
Work out some system while in Mina. Use the bathrooms before
leaving Arafah as the ones in Muzdalifah are quite bad. The entire
crowd gathers there at one time and the toilets end up over-flowing.
Try and clean up after yourself as much as possible.
Local phone cards can be bought for your mobile phones, get it as
soon as you get there.
Control your temper at all times. You are the guest of Rahmaan, so
act like one . Know that all that can so wrong will probably go wrong,
but you need to keep your cool.

AL MADINAH AL MUNAWWARAH
Visiting the city of Madinah is not a devotional rite of 'Umrah or Hajj.
However, it is the city of our beloved Prophet (S) who lies buried there. It
is highly commendable and a great honor to visit the Prophet (S)'s city
and Masjid (and re-live the history of Islam). The importance of
Madinah can be appreciated from the Hadeeth of Prophet (S) where he
said, "Indeed Ibraaheem declared Makkah sacred and supplicated (for
blessings) upon its inhabitants, and I declare Madinah to be sacred as
Ibraaheem declared Makkah to be sacred. I have supplicated (Allaah
for His blessings) in its sa' and its mudd (two standards of
measurement) twice as did Ibraaheem for the inhabitants of Makkah."
(Muslim : 1360)
Allaah's Messenger also said, (reported by Abu Hurairah R.A.) "A
prayer in my masjid is a thousand time more excellent than a prayer in
any other masjid, except Masjid al Haram. (Makkah, where it is
100,000). (Muslim : 1394)
Etiquette of the Prophet (S)'s Masjid:
- As with other masjids, enter with your right foot and recite the du'aa
for entering majids.
Allaahum-maftah lee abwaaba rahmatik"
(O Allaah! open for me the doors of Your Mercy). Muslim 1685.
- Perform two rakat Tahiyyatul Masjid.
"When any of you enters the Masjid, you should pray two rakat
before sitting down. (Hadeeth : Bukhari : 444, Muslim : 714)
- Do not push or walk over fellow muslims. Patience!
- Proceed to the front of the Masjid to visit the graves of Allaah's
Messenger and his two companions, Abu Bakr and Umar R.A.; if
and when possible.
- Walking backwards away from the tomb to leave the Masjid is an
innovation.

PROPHET MUHAMMAD'S (S)
LAST SERMON
In the tenth year of the Hijrah, he went to Makkah as a pilgrim for the last
time - his pilgrimage of farewell, it is called - When from Mount 'Arafat
he addressed to an enormous throng of pilgrims. He reminded them of
all the duties Islam enjoined upon them and that they would one day
have to meet their Lord, Who would judge each one of them according
to his work. An extract of the address is as follows:
I declare this truth that there is no god except Allaah
and I declare this truth that Muhammad is His servant
and His messenger.
O servants of Allaah, I advise you to worship Him and I
persuade you to do so.
O people! Listen to me carefully as I speak clearly, for I
do not think I will have the opportunity to meet you here
after this year.
O people! Your blood and your property have been
sanctified to one another, just as this month, this
year, this day in this city are sanctified.
Beware that I have conveyed the word to you. O
Allaah! Be my Witness!
So whosoever has anything in trust should return it to
its owner.
Amounts of usury of the days of ignorance are remitted
and first of all I remit the claims of usury of my uncle
'Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib.
Beware that I have conveyed the word. O Allaah! Be
my Witness!
O People! Your women have been given some right in
respect of you and you have been given some rights in
respect of them. It is incumbent on them to let no one
enter into their sleeping chambers except you and do
not let any one enter into your house whose entry is not
liked by you. And they should not commit any
adultery
After me, do not go back to the ways of idolatry and do
32
Patience
not slay each other.
I am leaving with you two things, as long as you follow
them, you will never go astray, and those are the Book
of Allaah (the Quraan) and my Sunnah (what I said and
what I did).
Beware that I have conveyed the word. O Allaah! Be
my Witness!
O People! Your God is One, and your ancestor is also
one. You are all the progeny of Adam who was created
from dust. The most respected before Allaah amongst
you is one who is most Godfearing. No Arab has
preference over a non-Arab or a non-Arab over an
Arab. Preference if any is on the basis of 'who fear
Allaah the most '
Those who are present here should convey these
words to those who are absent. Possibly those who
are absent may remember and observe these things
more carefully than those present.
O People! Allaah has assigned a specific share of
inheritance to each heir. To will more than one-third of
ones property is not permitted.
The child belongs to one on whose bed (marriage) it is
born, and the adulterer shall be stoned.
At the end of the discourse, he asked: Have I not conveyed the
message? And from that great multitude of men, who a few months or
years before had all been conscienceless idolaters, the shout went up:
O' Allaah! Yes! The Prophet said: O' Allaah! You are my witness! O
Allaah! You are my witness! O Allaah! You are my witness!
It was during that last pilgrimage when the following verse of the Qur'an
was revealed, declaring Al-Islam to be Allaah's chosen religion:
This day I have perfected your religion for you,
completed My Favors upon you and approved AlIslam as a Deen (The way of Life) for you.

Hajjatul-Wadaa
(The Farewell Pilgrimage).
The Messenger (S) of Allh announced his intention for the Hajj. Enormous
crowds of people came to Madinah, all of whom sought the guidance and
leadership of the Messengers (S) of Allh in the pilgrimage (Al-Hajj). [1] On a
Saturday of the last four days of Dhul-Qadah, the Prophet (S) started the
departure preparations.[2] He combed his hair, applied some perfume, wore
his garment, saddled his camel and set off in the afternoon. He arrived at
Dhul-Hulaifah before the afternoon prayer. He performed two rakah and
spent the night there. When it was morning he said to his Companions:
"A comer, sent by my Lord, has called on me tonight and said: Pray in this
blessed valley and say: I intend 'Umrah combined with pilgrimage. [3]
Before performing the noon prayer, he bathed for Ihraam (sacred state of
pilgrimage), and 'Aishah R.A. perfumed him on both his body and head with
her hand with a Dharira (a plant) and with a perfume containing musk. The
thick sticky layer of perfume could be seen among his parts of hair and
beard. He left it unwashed, wore his Ihraam. He performed the noon prayer
shortened to two rakah. He proclaimed pilgrimage procedure associated
with 'Umrah at his prayer place and proclaimed: "Labbaik Allaahumma
labbaik" 'Here I am at Your service O Allaah, here I am.' He, then mounted
his she-camel 'Al-Qaswa', When he moved into the desert, he said the
talbiyah - Labbaik.... again.
He proceeded with his journey till he approached Makkah. He spent the
night at Dhi Tuwa and entered Makkah after performing the dawn prayer
and bath. It was Sunday morning, 4th Dhul-Hijjah 10. He spent eight days
on the way, which was an average period. As soon as he entered Al-Haram
Masjid he circumambulated Al-Kabah and walked to and fro (Sa'ee)
between As-Safaa and Al-Marwah. He did not finish the Ihraam (ritual
consecration) because he was Qaarin (i.e. intending Umrah and Al-Hajj
associated). He had with him Al-Hady (i.e. the sacrificial animals) in order to
slaughter them. He camped on a high place of Makkah Al-Hajun. As for
circumambulation, after that he performed only that of Al-Hajj (pilgrimage
circumambulation).
Those of his Companions who had no Hady with them to sacrifice, were
ordered to change Ihraam (i.e. the state of ritual consecration) into Umrah
(i.e. lesser pilgrimage), and circumambulate Al-Kabah and stride ritually to
and fro between As-Safaa and Al-Marwah. After that they could relieve
themselves from Ihraam. They, however, showed reluctance to do what
they had been told. Thereupon, the Messenger (S) of Allh said: "Had I
known beforehand what I knew afterward, I would not have brought the
Hady with me, and if I did not have Hadi, I would have releived from it. On
hearing these words, his Companions obeyed the orders.
On the 8th Dhul-Hijjah 10 that is the Day of Tarwiyah, he left for Mina and
34
Patience
stayed there till the morning of the 9th D. Hijjah He performed the noon, the
afternoon, the sunset, the evening and the dawn prayers. i.e. five
prayers in Mina. Then he stayed for a while till the sun rose up, then he
moved along till he reached Arafah, where there was a tent built for him at
Namirah. He sat inside till the sun went down. He ordered that Al-Qaswa,
his she-camel, should be prepared for him. They saddled it and had it ready,
so he went down the valley where a hundred thousand and twenty-four or
forty-four thousand people gathered round him. There he stood and
delivered the following speech:
"O people! Listen to what I say. I do not know whether I will ever meet you at
this place after this year.[4] Your blood, your property and your honor are as
sacred as this day, this month and this city (i.e. Makkah and the surrounding
areas)."
"Behold! all practices of paganism and ignorance are now under my feet.
The blood-revenge of the Days of Ignorance (pre-Islamic time) are
remitted. The first claim on blood I abolish is that of Ibn Rabia bin Harith
who was nursed in the tribe of Sad and whom Hudhail killed. Usury is
forbidden, and I make a beginning by remitting the amount of interest which
Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib has to receive. Verily, it is remitted entirely."
"O people! Fear Allaah concerning women. Verily you have taken them on
the security of Allaah and have made their persons lawful unto you by
Words of Allaah! It is incumbent upon them to honor their conjugal rights
and, not to commit acts of impropriety which, if they do, you have authority
to chastise them, yet not severely. If your wives refrain from impropriety and
are faithful to you, clothe and feed them suitably."
"Verily, I have left amongst you the Book of Allaah, if you hold fast to it, you
shall never go astray." [5]
"O people, I am not succeeded by a Prophet and you are not succeeded by
any nation. So I recommend you to worship your Lord, to pray the five
prayers, to fast Ramadan and to offer the Zakat (poor-due) of your
provision willingly. I recommend you to do the pilgrimage to the Sacred
House of your Lord and to obey those who are in charge of you then you will
be awarded to enter the Paradise of your Lord." [6]
"And if you will be asked about me, what are you going to say?"
They replied:
"We bear witness that you have conveyed the Message and fulfilled your
mission."
He then raised his forefinger skywards and then moved it down towards the
people while saying:
35
Patience
"O Allaah, Bear witness."
He said that phrase thrice. [7]
The one who repeated the Prophets (S) statements loudly at Arafat was
Rabia bin Omaiyah bin Khalaf. [8]
As soon as the Prophet (S) had accomplished delivering the speech, the
following Qurnic verse was revealed to him:
"This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour
upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." [9]
Upon hearing this verse Umar (R.A.) cried. "What makes you cry?" He was
asked. His answer was: "Nothing succeeds perfection but imperfection." [10]
Bilal (R.A.) called for prayer after the speech, and then made the second
call. The Prophet (S) performed both of the noon and the afternoon prayers
separately, with two Iqamah and with no prayers in between. He then
mounted his she-camel Al-Qaswa, approached the location of the vigil,
directed his face towards Al-Qiblah, kept on standing till sunset when the
sky yellow colour vanished a bit and the disc of the sun disappeared.
Osamah added that the Prophet (S) moved onward to Muzdalifah. where
he observed the sunset and the night prayers with one First call and two
second calls. He did not perform any prayer between the two prayers.
Then he lay down till it was dawn prayer time. He performed it with one first
call and one second call at almost daybreak. Mounting on his Al-Qaswa, he
moved towards Al-Mashar Al-Haram. He faced Al-Qiblah and started
supplicating: "Allaah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allaah." He
remained there till it was clear morning and before the sun rose high, he
made his way to Mina. He moved a little faster in the bottom of the Muhassir
valley and then threaded the mid-road leading to the big Jamrah where he
stopped and pelted seven pebbles at it saying "Allaah is the Greatest" each
time. They were like small pebbles hurled from the bottom of the valley.
Then he set off to the sacrificial place, where he sacrificed sixty-three
camels with his hands, and asked Ali to slaughter the other, thirty-seven,
one hundred altogether. He made Ali share him in Al-Hady. A piece of meat
from each slaughtered animal was ordered to be cooked in a pot and from
which both men ate, and drank the broth.
Then the Messenger (S) of Allaah mounted his she-camel and returned to
the House where he performed tawaaf-i-Ifaadah and observed the noon
prayer at Makkah. There he came upon the children of Abdul Muttalib who
were supplying drinking water to people at Zamzam Well. "Draw up water,
children of Abdul Muttalib, I would draw up with you if I were not afraid that
people would appropriate this honour after me." They handed him a
container of water and he drank to his fill. [11]
At the daytime of the 10th Dhul-Hijjah 10 on the Slaughtering Day (Yaum
36
Patience
An-Nahr) The Prophet (S) delivered another speech. That was late in the
morning, while he was mounting a grey mule. Ali conveyed his statements
to the people, who were standing or sitting. [12] He repeated some of the
statements that he had previously said the day before. The two Sheikh
(Bukhri and Muslim) reported a version narrated by Abi Bakrah who said:
The Prophet (S) made a speech on Yaum An-Nahr (day of slaughtering)
and said:
"Time has grown similar in form and state to the time when Allaah created
the heavens and the earth. A year is twelve months. Four of which are
Sacred Months (Hurum). Three of the four months are successive. They
are Dhul-Qadah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Al-Muharram. The fourth Month is Rajab
Mudar, which comes between Jumada and Shaban."
"What month is this month?" He asked. We said: "Allaah and His
Messenger know best of all." He kept silent for a while till we thought he
would attach to it a different appellation. "Is it not Dhul-Hijjah?" He
wondered. "Yes. It is." We said. Then he asked, "What is this town called?"
We said: "Allh and His Messenger know best of all." He was silent for a
while till we thought he would give it a different name. "Is it not Al-Baldah?
(i.e. the town)" asked he. "Yes. It is." We replied. Then he asked again,
"What day is it today?" We replied: "Allh and His Messenger know best of
all." Then he kept silent for a while and said wondering: "Is it not An-Nahr
(i.e. slaughtering) Day?" "Yes. It is." said we. Then he said:
"Your blood, your property and your honor are as sacred as this day, this
month, and this town."
"You will go back to be resurrected (after death) to your Lord. There you will
be accounted for your deeds. So do not turn into people who go astray and
kill one another."
"Have I not delivered the Message (of my Lord)?" "Yes you have." said they.
"O Allaah! Bear witness! Let him that is present convey it to him who is
absent. For haply, many people to whom the Message is conveyed may
have more understanding of it than the audience,." said he. [13]
In another version it is said that the Prophet (S) had said in that very
speech:
"Any wrongdoer does not wrong another except himself. so let none of you
be blamed for the acts of his father or his son. Verily Satan has utterly
despaired a being worshipped in this city of yours; but he will be obeyed by
you in things you will be considering of no value. Satan will be content with
even such things." [14]
The Messenger (S) of Allaah spent At-Tashreeq Days (11th, 12th and 13th
of Dhul-Hijjah) in Mina, teachings about Islam, remembering Allaah
37
Patience
(praying), following the ways of guidance of Ibraaheem (A.S.), wiping out all
traces and features or polytheism. On one of the days of At-Tashreeq he
delivered a speeches as well. In a version reported by Abu Dawood with
good chain narration, Sira, the daughter of Nabhan; she said: "The
Messenger (S) of Allh made us a speech at the Ruus (Heads) Day in
which he said: "Is it not this the middle day of At-Tashreeq." [15]
His speech that day was similar to that of An-Nahr Days. It was made after
the revelation of Surat An-Nasr.
On the second day of An-Nafr (i.e. Departure) on the 13th Dhul-Hijjah 10,
the Prophet (S) proceeded to Mina and stayed at a high place of a mountain
side at Bani Kinanah from Al-Abtah Valley. He spent the rest of that day and
night there where he performed the noon, the afternoon, the sunset and
the night prayers.
Then he slept for a short while and mounted leaving for the Kabah. He
performed the Farewell Circumambulation (Tawaf Al-Wadaa), after
ordering his Companions to do the same thing.
Upon the accomplishment of his religious rituals, he quickened his move to
the purified Madinah.
He went there not to seek rest but to resume the strife and struggle in the
way of Allaah. [16]
