On page 172, Miranda compares the torment her siblings and she suffered at the hands of their
father to that endured by her Native American ancestors from the Spanish padres during the building
of the California Missions.
After many years of reliving the pain caused by her father and the color of her skin, Miranda finds
herself finally capable of liberation both spiritually and mentally - by accepting her sexuality and
reaching out to discover her own Esselen roots.
Due to Mirandas experiences and fierce persona, she was able to fight through her tormented
childhood and ancestry and reach a point of enlightenment, however, would other Native Americans
in different economic and mental situations be capable of finding their liberation, would they seek it?
How many generations after the Mission Indians would find themselves capable of reaching such
liberation?

On page 172, Miranda compares the torment her siblings and she suffered at the hands of their
father to that endured by Native Americans from the Spanish padres during the building of the
California Missions.
Earlier on page 72 she explains his cruelty and temper to his children by linking it to that taught to
the Indigenous people by the Spanish soldiers.

Is Mirandas claim that her life has been affected directly from the discrimination of her people in the
past plausible or is her life simply a common one with much sorrow.

Would her people - and all Indigenous People in general- find their own liberation? Would Vincenta,
the young girl raped by padre Real - page 23- have any form of liberation?
