PREFACE
This report is intended to describe UNPAD Student Chapter of SEG activities in
order to inform all people that having concern with Student Chapter activities. Besides, we
also want to share our activity report for the future. As we are recognized as an organization
below SEG, so we have to be responsible in holding and keeping up the good name of
SEG by doing good and contributive activities especially for the student itself. Its certain
that all of the activities that we have held are to support educational activities of the
member of the student chapter. We also realize that our activity still far from perfect, but
we are doing our best to run the chapter well by making good and accurate plan, doing the
budget management, being responsible for every activity that we have held, and the
most important is developing the leadership skill among the chapter member.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
By being the part of SEG Student Chapter, UNPAD Student Chapter have learned
a great deal of so much things. We have learned many topics related to petroleum,
natural gas and other energy mineral resources. We also could meet and keep contact
with the geoscientist outside of academia. Encouragement and assistance from every
single individu who helped us are gratefully appreciated. We wish to thank and great
achievement for all lecturer who taught us, opened my mind about petroleum and gave a
motivation to us to learn more.
INTRODUCTION
SEG is the world's leading geosciences society dedicated to "advancing geophysics today
for inspiring geoscientists for tomorrow." SEG provides students with the resources and tools
they need for a successful academic and professional career. As part of this society and after a
year of a very challenging and full experienced journey that University of Padjadjaran Student
Chapter has passed. We are proudly hand in our activity report which is expressed our
determination of conducting all of the activities and meetings. Our activities consist of
academic activities which are short courses, guest lecture talks, and field trip. Of course, all
of mentioned academic activities were really help us as a student to improve and gain our
knowledge about geosciences, in fact that Indonesian geosciences students still lack of good
curriculum and textbooks.
Besides,
we
also
followed
and
conducted
activities
that
could
be
considered not really intended to achieve academic goal, respectively. But once
again those activities mean so much for Indonesian Student Chapter, especially
for Padjadjaran University Student Chapter to
working

by
following
and
conducting
either
international
or
and
national
scale event. Some UNPAD Student Chapter members was chosen and passed the qualification of
being student volunteer, student delegation, oral and poster presenter at some of
National/International Convention and Exhibition that held in the last past of year. We do
believe this experience would give a significant contribution for the improvement
of UNPAD Student Chapter.
This report provides an integrated view of UNPAD Student Chapter of SEG , list of
executive committee and organization chart, constitution, list of activities in September

SEG SC UNPAD FIELD TRIP
GEOLOGICAL FIELD TRIP in CINAMBO
10
Background Activity
Geology is a science that studies the Earth and its utilization for the benefit for human. In
its application, a geophysicist will interpret the data obtained in the field. This data can be
obtained by controlling the field of knowledge so that knowledge becomes an important matter
for geophysical student. To improve the knowledge, necessary to hold various activities in the
field.
Knowledge gained from field to field excursion in accordance with the course lecturer
who has set the course of study. In addition, SEG Padjadjaran University Student Chapter also
have the opportunity to get knowledge of the field while on a field study in Cinambo,
Majalengka Area. However, students have the opportunity to increase knowledge of the field by
following other activities outside of school, one of them by following the field trip. Field trip is
purposed to be more flexible because it is not binding and may be followed by anyone without
having to take a particular course. For this reason, SEG Padjadjaran University Student Chapter
in cooperation with Geophysical Student Association of Padjadjaran University held a field trip
activities are useful to increase student knowledge of the field.
Objective
This field trip provides basic geological knowledge that useful for geophysical
interpretation and geophysical analysis and also to perform good working in geological and
structural analysis

Summary
Cinambo, Majalengka area- West Java, is part of Bogor Basin Back Arc Basin (Back-Arc
Basin) geological formation. These basins are characterized by gravity flow deposits (turbidit)
formed from the Early Miocene time. This pattern shows progradation and the younger to the
north, and relate well with the pattern of growth-fault Fold-Thrust Belt in the direction of NNE.
Anjakan perlipatan-lane section is a series of lines that develop from the west, about Purwakarta
to the east around Bumiayu.
Cinambo river, a branch of S. Cimanuk, is one of the best shows outcrops of a folding
sequence and faulting almost constantly. The litology comprises sandstone and mudstone nearly
uniform with the general direction of WNW-ESE bedding.

Stephen M. Scott
17
Background Activity
Subsurface Mapping are one of basic knowledge for geosciences especially geophysicists
to view objects buried under the surface of the Earth. Subsurface maps are the most important
and widely used documents in petroleum exploration and development. Geoscientists and
engineers are expected to understand and be able to efficiently and accurately generate many
types of subsurface maps. Nevertheless, many geoscientists have not had sufficient formal
training in the fundamental principles and methods that underlie accurately constructed
subsurface maps, whether the data source is a seismic interpretation, well log correlation or both.
Based on that, University of Padjadjaran Student Chapter of SEG invited an experts
Lecturer and was held a continually course with title Subsurface Mapping.
Objective
This course covers both fundamental methods of subsurface mapping that have been used
by the most proficient exploration and development geoscientists in the industry, as well as an
introduction to some of the more recent advances in interpretation.

Field Trip to Chevron Geothermal Darajat, Garut
31
Background Activity
Indonesia has a big potential of geothermal energy, as the country lies along the Ring of
Fire where most of the volcanoes are located. There are 256 geothermal areas that have been
identified in Indonesia, of which 84 geothermal areas have been identified in Sumatera, 76 areas
in Java, 51 areas in Sulawesi, 21 areas in Nusa Tenggara, 3 areas in Irian, 15 areas in Maluku
and 5 areas in Kalimantan. Most geothermal systems in Indonesia have high temperature, mostly
above 225oC, very suitable for electricity generation. The potential of geothermal energy is
estimated at 27,510 MW, including 14,172 MW reserves, with proven of 2,287 MW, probable of
1,050 MW and possible of 10,835 MW (Setiawan, 2009). One of the geothermal field with
production well are in Chevron Geothermal Field in Darajat, Garut.
As geologist and geophysicists are closes with geothermal exploration have been or will
in the position and placed in the field. Being a geologist and geophysicists must be understands
the conditions of the field especially in this case the students who interested in geothermal
exploration.
Based on the, University of Padjadjaran Student Chapter of American Association of
Petroleum Geologist (UNPAD SC of AAPG) join with University of Padjadjaran Student
Chapter of Society of Exploration Geophysicists (UNPAD SC of SEG), is was held the Field
Trip program to compete all student who interested in Geothermal Explorations.
Objective
This Filed Trip covers the real knowledge about field geothermal exploration. As well as
an introduction to some of the more information to the students about the geothermal area and
the production activity of geothermal well.

Then, Mr. Glenn explained the steps and the processes within the geothermal industry,
specifically about what the company is doing in Mount Darajat area. He elaborated the way of
gathering the geothermal energy from below the earth until the distribution of it, and also how
clean and useful this energy is. There are so many steps and processes to be passed by the energy
so that the people will be able to consume it. So, in order to have the better understanding for
this, Mr. Glenn elaborated more about the tools and facilities that are used in this industry such
as the separator, scrubber, turbines, and else. He also explained the specific use and processes
happen within the tools.
After a while, the participants were taken by buses to go to Darajat geothermal field. There,
all the students were permitted to see closely and safely the tools and the facilities elaborated
before. Students could also ask few questions here to satisfy their curiosity about everything they
see in the field. The next hour, all participants were driven back to the hall to have a discussion
with the lecturer.
When there was no more question, Mr. Arias Sugandhi as one of the lecturers then closed
the activity with short speeches. The participants thanked Mr. Glenn and PT. CGI by giving a
memento and vice versa. And at the end, the participants, the lecturers and people from PT. CGI
took pictures together in the middle of the hall. And then departed back to Jatinangor at 6

c. Vaporchoc
Vaporchoc is almost same with air gun. But small different that is Vaporchoc use the
warm and high pressure of stem that injected into sea water. The bubble of air will be eliminated
together along with steam condensated.
We agreed together and said that our earth is old. The long journey of the earth existence for
by the millions even billions year have influenced shape and composition of the earth significantly.
These things are field of study that learned by geoscientist in all around of the world. So many
scientist compete seriously to reveal a mysterious things about the earth still unresolved.
Modern Scientist explain that the earth is divided by complex layered earth. We begin from
the inner part of the earth, that is inner core, outside core, lower mantle, outer mantle (transition zone
and asthenosphere) ,lithosphere, and outsider part of the earth is crust where we are live, life, and die.
Crust is the part where we can find the oil and gas trapped. The deep of crust is about 20-35
Km . Theoretically the crust are divide as two, that is continental crust and oceanic crust. on the crust,
for about 3-10 Km from the surface mostly are sediment that happened because of naturally or
geologically process. Sediment accumulation on the crust is the mostly possible as target of
exploration research for oil, mining, civil, geothermal, etc.
Acoustic Impedance
Rock have many different measureable properties. For example : temperature, spontaneous
potential, radioactivity, porosity, permeability, Resistivity, density, velocity(P&S). In reflection
seismology we are primarily interested in density and velocity P wave (Vp compressional) .
43
Seismic waves propagate in solids as patterns of particle deformation travelling through the
materials with velocities that depend upon their elastic properties and densities. Normal incidence
plane compressional wave synthetic seismogram produced by a stratifeid system consisting of
perfectly elastic horizontal layers.Wave propagation across a boundary horizontal plane interface
&compressional P wave propagation along the vertical axis.

One Day Course: Petrophysics Study Case
By
Titte Nurul Fatima (RWE DEA,Germany)
49
Background Activity
Petrophysics is the study of the physical and chemical properties that describe the occurrence and
behavior
of rocks,
soils
and
fluids .
Petrophysics
mainly
studies reservoirs of
resources,
including ore deposits and oil or natural gas reservoirs. Petrophysicists in the oil and gas industry
typically are employed in helping the engineers and other geoscientists understand the rock properties of
the reservoir. Petrophysicists evaluate the reservoir rock properties by employing well log measurements,
in which a string of measurement tools are inserted in the borehole, core measurements, in which rock
samples are retrieved from subsurface, and sometimes seismic measurements, and combining them with
geology and geophysics. The qualitative identification of rock types, detect the presence of
hydrocarbons, and define the boundaries of the reservoir, while petrophysics analysis is analysis
based on the quantitative calculation of the value of porosity, fluid saturation and resistivity.
These data are obtained by inserting a detector into a well bore hole. Subsurface data obtained
from the well bore is a diagram which is a vertical picture of the relationship between the depth
to the character or nature of the rock. The end result is a lithologic sequence is used for
manufacturing a vertical cross section of the stratigraphic column.
As the importance of petrophysical knowledfe, Society of Exploration Geophysicists
Padjadjaran University Student Chapter presented one day course about Petrophysics Study
Case by Titte Nurul Fatima (Petrophysicist of RWE DEA,Germany).
Objective
1. Students can understand logging methods
2. Students can understand principle of logging tools
3. Student can understand implementation of petrophysics analysis in interpretation of
lithology

Summary
Most petrophysicists are employed to compute what are commonly called conventional (or
reservoir) petrophysical properties. These are:
Lithology: What type of rock is it. When combined with local geology and core study,
geoscientists
can
use
log
measurements
such
as natural
gamma, neutron, density, Photoelectric, resistivity or their combination to determine the
lithology downhole.
Porosity: The amount of pore (or fluid occupied) space in the rock. This is typically measured
using an instrument that measures the reaction of the rock to bombardment by neutrons or
by gamma rays. Sonic wave speed and NMR logs are also measured to derive rock porosity.
51
Water saturation:
The fraction of the pore space occupied by water. This is typically
measured using an instrument that measures the resistivity of the rock.
Permeability: The quantity of fluid (usually hydrocarbon) that can flow from the rock as a
function of time and pressure

An Introduction: Seismic Method Exploration & Basic Petroleum Geology
By
Mr.Ginanjar (Chevron Indonesia Company)
55
Background Activity
Natural resource especially hydrocarbon is the energy resources which is the most human needs to
assist human activities. Oil industries need the right technology to explore hydrocarbon in the subsurface
consider on cost, technological sophistication, and accuracy of the results. In this case, the seismic
method is the most popular method in hydrocarbon exploration.
Reflection seismic method is one of the geophysical methods used by oil and gas company to
explore hydrocarbon reservoir. This method, over time, growing rapidly along with the application of
advanced technologies in the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of seismic data.

Summary
Seismic waves are mechanical waves that arise because of the earthquake. Wave, generally, is
interference propagation phenomena with the surrounding medium. This interference initially occurs
56
locally leading to a shift in the position of the particle medium, both the pressure and density, means that
energy are transported.
Seismic research is conducted by creating vibrations from vibrating source. The vibrations will
propagate in all directions beneath the surface of a vibrating wave. Wave in the rock layers will be
reflected, refracted and absorbed. Response of the wave varies physical properties of rocks that include
density, porosity, age, rock, density, and depth of rock. The reflected wave will be recieved by geophones
on the surface and transmitted to the instrument to be recorded. The results will get a cross section of
seismic recordings.
Basic Principle of seismic methods is ; Snells law, Fermats law, and Huygens principle. Petroleum
exploration activities include the acquisition of seismic data, seismic data processing, and interpretation
of seismic data. The acquisition phase will greatly affect the quality of the data. Therefore it is necessary
to observe several parameters of the field so that its implementation will be obtained in the target
information as detailed as possible with the lowest possible noise (S / N ratio is high). For data acquisition
includes all activities starting preparation, measurement to obtain field data are usually stored in the
magnetic tape or hard-disk.
Interpretation of seismic data is the final process of seismic exploration work phase. Interpretation of
seismic data ams to estimate the geological significance of seismic data. From the results of seismic data
interpretation will be tested with other data such as well data, velocity data or other supporting data. And
the end result of interpretation is the areas of hydrocarbon prospects for both exploration drilling and
development wells.
