ABCs of the

Roman Gods

Apollo
Apollo was the god of the sun, music, and
prophesy. Apollo was the son of Jupiter, the king of
the gods, and Leto, a mortal. He pulled the sun with
his flying chariot through the sky every day.
Apollos most well-known symbol was his lyre.

Bacchus
Bacchus is the god of madness, grapes, wine,
and wine-making. He was the son of Jupiter and
Semele, a mortal women. Semele died before
Bacchus was born so Jupiter sewed him into his
thigh so he could grow.
Bachhuss was most well-known for his wine goblet

Circe
Circe was the goddess of magic. She was the
daughter of Helios, the sun incarnate, and Perse, an
ocean nymph. She turned her enemies into animals
with her magic. She was exiled to an island for the
abuse of her powers.

Diana

Diana is the goddess of the hunt, moon, and


childbirth. Diana is the twin of the god Apollo.
Diana was born first and helped her mother deliver
her twin brother Apollo. She punishes those who
harm the forests.
Diana was well-known with a bow.

Egeria
Egeria was a minor goddess known for her water
curing people. We dont know who Egerias parents
are. She was an advisor to the second king of Rome.
She helped make the majority of laws and many
rituals for the Roman Empire.

Fides
Fides was the Goddess of trust. We dont know
who Fidess parents were. Her temple was where
Rome signed treaties with foreign nations and kept
their treaties. People would to tightly wrap their
right hand together to show their devotion to her.
She was swore to when one wanted to covey
absolute honesty.

Genius
Genius in a way wasnt a god. Genius was the
embodiment of someones divinity, what we would
call a soul. Genius was in all creatures, and
sometimes powerful objects. Volcanoes, religious
sites, and some relics were said to hold genius.
Genius was the holder of anything divine a person or
object had.

Hercules
Hercules was the god of strength. Hercules was
the son of Jupiter, the king of the Gods, and
Alcmene, a mortal women. Hercules was a mortal
first and was given godhood. Hercules was famous
for completing thirteen impossible tasks called the
Labours. Hercules was so strong that even as a baby
he could stop anyone from hurting him.

Ianus
Ianus is the two-headed god of beginnings and
decisions. It is unknown who Ianuss parents are.
Ianus was one of the most important gods of the
Roman gods. Every ceremony or ritual, regardless
of who was being worshipped, invoked Ianus first.

Jupiter
Jupiter was the king of the gods, he was the god
of the sky, thunder, lightning, and storms. Jupiter
was the son of Kronos, the Titan of Time, and Opis,
a Titan. Jupiter is one of the three sons of Kronos.
Jupiter was the most important god in the Roman
world. Jupiter wielded the first lightning bolt.

Kronos
Kronos was the Titan of time. Titans were the
dieties before the gods came to be. Kronos was the
son of Gaia, the earth, and Uranus, the heavens.
Kronos defeated his father and took control of the
world for a short time, during which there was no
immorality.

Libertas
Libertas is the goddess of liberty. Her parents
are unknown. Libertas was the inspiration for the
Statue of Liberty. She is on the back of the 20 franc
coin. She was also associated with the hat freed
slaves wore in Rome. She was invoked during the
ritual of freeing slaves.

Mars
Mars is the God of War. Mars is the son of
Jupiter, King of the Gods, and Juno, Goddess of the
hearth. Mars was one of the most important gods of
Rome, he was the main war god. He was the father
of Remus and Romulus, the brothers who founded
Rome.

Neptune
Neptune is the God of the Sea. Neptune was the
son of Kronos, the king of the Titans, and Opis, the
queen of the Titans. Neptune was one of the most
important gods to the romans, he controlled the seas
and was the creator of storms. Neptune also created
the first horses out of sea foam.

Opis
Opis is the queen of the Titans. Opis is the
Goddess of Fertility. Opis saved her son Jupiter by
hiding him from Kronos. Opis gave birth to many of
the main gods and goddesses of Rome, including
Jupiter himself. Opis fed her husband a rock to save
Jupiter from Kronos.

Pluto
Pluto was the God of the underworld and wealth.
Pluto was the son of Kronos and Opis. Pluto
controlled the entire of the afterlife. Pluto became
considered a more positive deity as Rome changed.
Pluto was one of the few gods who was
monogamous, meaning he only loved his wife.

Quirinus
Quirinus was a God of War. Quirinus was not
born, he was risen to divinity at death, his mortal
name was Romulus, and he was the First King of
Rome. Quirinus was at first a very important god in
Rome, but as time passed and Rome evolved
Quirinus started to disappear.

Roma
Roma is the Goddess of the Roman Empire. She
has no parents, she just came into being when Rome
did. Roma was considered the genius of Rome. She
is interesting because while she is the goddess of
Rome she was a greek goddess first. The greeks
made the goddess when they made an alliance with
Rome.

surplus, renewal, liberation and welfare. Saluss


parentage is not known. Saturn was worshipped
with greek rituals often. She was often represented
with a bowl while sitting. She was also known as the
personification of health.

Trivia
Trivia was the Goddess of Witchcraft and
Crossroads. We do not know who Trivias parents
are. Trivia only traveled at night and in grave yards.
Trivia created the first nymphs, women who
personify a tree or river. Trivia had normal women
help her with her powers and it caused their
transformation.

Uranus
Uranus was the personification of the sky.
Uranus was the daughter of Opis, she didnt have a
father. Uranus was attacked by her son Kronos and
through the blood shed by the attack came many of
the monsters of Roman mythology. Uranus came to
be with Opis every night until the attack on her by
Kronos.

Vulcan
Vulcan was the God of the Forge and Fire. He
was the son of Juno and Jupiter. A childhood
accident saw him being raised by a nymph in an
ocean grotto. Vulcan started crafting items when he
was very young. Vulcan used both the good and
destructive aspects of fire.

The romans didnt have gods with these as the
first letter of their names.

Zephyr
Zephyr is the God of the West Wind. He was the
son of Aestraus and the goddess of dawn. Zephyr
was the gentlest of the four winds. Zephyr was
impulsive and rather quick to have strong emotioins.
