A. Read the following text carefully.

Does pollution affect animals more than humans?
Yes, humans have more conscious control over their own environment and can make choices about where they
live, adjust the temperature of their houses, or choose what to eat.
What are the main effects of pollution on animals?
Oil spills: The effects of an oil spill are extremely serious. The birds can be covered in oil and die. The
ecosystem and foodchain are likely to be affected in the area for up to ten years. The fish can be poisoned,
which means that all animals that used to feed on those fish will either be poisoned or will starve. It could
take 10 years to get rid of the oil spills effect.
Acid rain: Burning certain fuels produces sulphur dioxide. This mixes with rainwater and causes acid rain. This
gets into rivers and causes fish to have genetic defects or die. This also affects the food chain.
Rubbish: Animals often become entangled with rubbish such as six pack rings. Unless they can get rid of it,
they cant function properly and they can die.
Global warming: Carbon dioxide traps heat in the Earths atmosphere, not allowing it to escape, just like glass
in a greenhouse, so it is called The Greenhouse Effect. This causes the Earth to heat up and in some cases
rainfall decreases and in other cases it increases, causing floods. This means some plants cannot grow.
Therefore, many people in the developing world die, and so do animals.
Pesticides and fertilizers: Rain washes pesticides and fertilizers into rivers. Pesticides harm the animals and
can cause genetic defects. Fertilizers allow bacteria and plants to grow too fast. This steals oxygen in the
water and can kill the animals.
Deforestation: When trees are pulled down for housing, they cannot absorb carbon dioxide or provide oxygen.
This adds to global warming and means some plants have less shade and cannot grow. This means some animals
have less to eat and become endangered. This is a particular problem in the Amazonian rainforest.
What can be done?
One of the main problems facing the planet is that the population has increased so much. In 1930 the world
population was 2000 million, it is now 6000 million. If there were fewer people we would use less of the
worlds resources (such as trees for housing). Because of this, some people say we must control the population
more. However, another solution is to act more responsibly when disposing of rubbish or using fuel.
