questionsrelatedtoDXsystemsincludingwhat
theyareandanyassociatedassumptionsmade
withintheprogram.Wewilltakealookat
specificinputsforthistypeofequipment
bothinCreateSystemsandCreatePlants.Iwill
thenwalkthroughsomeexamples.FinallyIll
discussthebestreportstoreferencetosize
yourDXequipment.
SowhatareDXsystems?DXsystemsprovide
coolingtotheairstreamwithouttheuseof
chilledwater.Theairpassesdirectlythrough
theevaporatoroftherefrigerantloopwhichis
wherethedirectportionofthenameis
derived.Theexpansionportionofthename
comesfromthefactthattherefrigerantpasses
throughanexpansiondevicepriortoentering
thecoilthenexpandsfromaliquidtoavapor
astherefrigerantpassesthroughthecoiland
absorbsheatfromtheair.
Therearetwodifferentphysicalconfigurations
forDXpiecesofequipment,thepackaged
systemandthesplitsystem.Packagedsystems
housethecoolingcoil,compressor,and
condenserallinthesameunit.Splitsystems
ontheotherhandlocatesomecomponents
outsideandothersinsidethebuilding.A
typicalsplitDXsystemlocatesthecoolingcoil
insidethebuildinginanairhandlingunitwhile
thecompressorandcondenserarelocated
outsidewithrefrigerantlinesconnectingthe
outsideandinsidecomponents.
Anadvantageofpackagedsystemsisthatthe
refrigerantlinescanbeshorterandtheentire
systemcanbefactorytested.Theadvantageof
splitsystemsisthattheductworkcanbe
shorterbecausethecoolingcoilislocated
closertotheconditionedspace.
TypicallyDXsystemsarelessexpensiveand
generallyeasiertoinstallthanchilledwater
systems.Theyarealsousefulfortenant
buildingsbecausesmall,separateDXsystems
canbeinstalledineachtenantspacewhere
eachtenantwillpayseparatelyfortheirown
energyconsumption.

Nowthatyouhaveabasicunderstandingof
whatDXsystemsare,letstakealookathow
theyaresetupinTRACE.Afterthetemplates
androomshavebeencreatedfortheproject,
theairsidesystemscanbesetup.Itis
importanttonotethatinCreateSystems,only
theairpathandcoilandfanlocationsare
defined.Therefrigerationandheatingsources
arenotdefineduntilCreatePlants.Forthis
reason,thereisnooptionforaDXsystem
typelistedontheSelectiontab.Here,in
CreateSystems,youaredefiningtheair
deliverytypesuchas:constantvolumesingle
zone,multiplezoneVAV,PTAC,orwater
sourceheatpump.
Byselectingaparticularsystem,youarealso
specifyingwherethecoilwillbelocated
whetheritisatthesystem,zone,orroomlevel.
Thiswillbeimportantwhenyouassignyour
roomstoyoursystems.Asystemlevelcoilis
anindividualcoilthatservesallthezonesand
roomsassignedtothatsystem.Anexampleof
thisisthecoolingcoilofaVAVreheatsystem.
Whenthecoilissettothezonelevel,each
zoneonthesystemwillreceiveitsowncoil.An
examplebeingthereheatcoilslocatedinthe
terminalboxesofaVAVreheatsystem.Finally,
whenthecoillevelissettoroom,eachand
everyroomonthesystemwillgetitsowncoil
whichistrueforthewatersourceheatpump
system.

awareofsomeimportantdesignconsiderations
thatTRACEdoesnottakeintoaccount.TRACE
isnotspatiallyawaresoitdoesntknow
whethertheDXsystemyouaremodelingisa
packagedunitorasplitsystem.Thishasan
impactontwokeydesignelements.
First,TRACEdoesnotconsiderthelengthof
refrigerantpipingfortheunit.Thisisespecially
importantforsplitsystemsthathavelonger
refrigerantpipingrunsconnectingtheindoor
evaporatortotheoutdoorcompressorand
condenser.Longerpipelengthscanhavea
negativeimpactonmaintainingrefrigerant
temperatureandphaseasittravelsbetween
components.Therearealsobuildingcode
requirementsthatmustbemetregardingthe
maximumrefrigerantpipelengths.Thisdesign
workwillneedtobeconductedoutsideof
TRACE.
Second,TRACEdoesnotconsiderthelengthof
airductsandhowfartheairmusttravelfrom
thecoolingcoiltotheconditionedspace.This
ismoreimportantwithpackagedsystems
wheretheunitisgenerallylocatedontheroof
andmayserveseveralfloorsusinglong
sectionsofductwork.
Onceyoursystemsareconfigured,youcanset
upyourplantswhichwilldictatethetypeof
energyyourcoilswillusetoconditiontheair.
Letstakealookatcoolingequipmentfirst.
TRACEhasfivedifferentplantcategoriesfor
coolingequipment,threeofwhichcanbeused
tomodelDXequipment.Thesearetheair
cooledunitary,watercooledunitary,andwater
sourceheatpump.Theaircooledchillerand
watercooledchillerarenottobeusedforDX
systems.
Remember,Plantsissomewhatofa
misnomerforDXequipment,soits
configurationmustbeviewedalittledifferently
whenassigningcoilsandequipmenttoaplant.

WhencreatingplantsforDXequipment,we
canessentiallycreateacoolingplantforevery
RTU.Themaximumnumberofcoolingand
heatingplantsallowedinTRACE,however,is
20.Ifyourequiremorethan20plants,youcan
groupairsidesystemsthataresimilarinRTU
performanceandputthemonasinglecooling
plantwithasingle,largerpieceofequipment
withaweightedaverageforefficiency.
Remember,donotputmultiplepiecesofDX
equipmentunderoneplantunlessyouare
planningonsequencingthemwhichisNOT
typical.
Afteryouhavechosentheproperequipment
category,youwillneedtochoosethespecific
pieceofequipmentyouwishtomodelinthe
EquipmentTypedropdown(click).Thisinput
willbesomewhatdependentuponwhatwas
choseninCreateSystems.Forexample,ifyou
aremodelingapackagedterminalair
conditioner,youshouldselectoneofthePTAC
optionsfromthedropdown.Likewise,ifyou
aremodelingasinglezoneVAVrooftopunit,
youshouldselectoneoftherooftopunit
optionsinthedropdown.
Youcanchoosetoenteracoolingcapacity
(click)ifyoualreadyhaveaspecificpieceof
equipmentchosenoryoucanleaveitblankand
TRACEwilldeterminethesizeforyou.Note,
forheatpumps,thecapacityinheatingmodeis
enteredinthe(click)heatrecoveryinput.This
valueistypicallyhigherthanthecooling
capacityaswearenowaccountingforthe
capacityofthecompressorplustheheatof
compression.Next,youshouldbesuretoinput
avalueforthe(click)energyrate.Something
tonote,hereisthatEERisanavailableunitfor
energyratebutIEERandSEER(alsocalled
sear)cannotbeused.
EERistheenergyefficiencyratioatagiven
individual,designoperatingpoint.Thesear
(seasonalenergyefficiencyratio)andIEER
(integratedenergyefficiencyratio)onthe
otherhandaredeterminedusingbothdesign
conditionsandpartloadconditions.Thisisnot

First,youwillneedtoconvertthefanenergy
intoakW/tonvaluebytakingthefankWand

energyisthensubtractedfromthetotal
packagedenergy.Finallythecondenserfan
energyalsoneedstobesubtracted.Here,the

WhatisleftoveristhekW/tonforthe
compressor.
Additionally,ifyouareusingaheatpump,
makesureyouchecktheboxforapplysame

precooling.Evaporativeprecoolingisusedto
increasetheeffectivenessofaircooledpieces
ofequipmentbyprecoolingthecondenserair
beforeitpassesthroughthecondenser.Water
evaporatesfromtheprecoolingmaterial,
decreasingtheenteringoutdoorair
temperaturetothecondenser,whichincreases
thecondensercapacityandefficiency.Thiscan
beturnedonbyclickingthecontrolsbuttonon

Becausethisheatingplantisspecifiedasthe
backupheatsourcefortheairtoaircooling
equipment,TRACEwillprovideheatingtothis
coilfromtheairtoairheatpumpfirstbefore
providingheatwiththisbackupheatingplant.

TherearesomeveryusefulreportsinTRACE
thatcanbeusedtohelpsizeequipment.The
firstofthesearetheChecksumreports.These
reportsprovideinformationon:supply
airflowsandtemperatures,coolingandheating
loads,coilselections,andabreakdownofload
components.Itisimportanttomakesureyou
areviewingthecorrectchecksumsreport
whichisdependentuponthelocationofyour
fansandcoils.Ifyouhaveazonelevelcoil,as
withoursinglezoneVAVsystem,youwillneed
tolookattheZoneChecksumsreportto
determinesizinginformationforcoils.
Youcanseethecoilsizinginformationatthe
bottomofthereportaswellassupply
temperaturesandairflowsoverhere.
Anevenmoreusefulreportforequipment
sizingthanthechecksumsreportistheSystem
ComponentSelectionreportbecauseit
determinesthecoillevelforyouandreports
