Q. 1.

What is e-learning?

Learning

facilitated

and

supported

through

the

use

of

information

and

communications technology, e-learning can cover a spectrum of activities from

supported learning, to blended learning (the combination of traditional and elearning practices), to learning that is entirely online.
Whatever the technology be, learning is the vital element. E-learning
delivered

using

electronic

delivery

methods

such

as

CD-ROMs,

is

video

conferencing, websites, and e-mail.

Often used in distance-learning programmes, this mode of training covers a wide
set of applications and processes such as web-based learning, computer-based
learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaboration. It includes the delivery of
content via Internet, intranet/extranet, audio and videotape, satellite, and CDROM. However, many organizations only consider it as a network-enabled transfer
of skills and knowledge.
E-learning has progressed a long way since the early days of computer.
Technology improvements have been rapid and so have been the changes in
training method. Main changes have been the merging of video with computer
and later merging of communication with these technologies. The first step was
the introduction of interactive video. This make trainer to use the power of
computer based training with the ability of the interactive video disc to produce
moving pictures and sound, thus creating stimulating and effective training.
From the training perspective, e-learning has complemented the trainers with
effective tools and allowed better and increased reach. With the improvements in
e-learning

technologies, today,

trainers are

able

to create

and develop

Demonstrations, Simulations, Scenario based training, and Robust quizzes that

has allowed the normal classroom training made available to many more and
made the classroom activity itself more effective and interactive.
Conclusion
Convenience, flexibility, and accessibility are main advantage of e-learning. It
offers to the trainees a training program that they can learn at their own pace
and at their own place. They can also access the training at any time, only as
much as they need.

E-learning is a very effective and efficient way of training.

As the cost of

accessing the internet is going down and as the personal computers are becoming
more powerful, e-learning will become even more cost effective.
From the social perspective, this form of learning has allowed education and
training for all even at places where there is lack of trained teachers and
educators. One may recall the Idea cellular advertisement to this effect. This has
also made quality training and education made more affordable and available to
the mass. For example: The collaboration that NIIT Imperia has with top B-schools
such as IIMs, IIFT etc. to offer their virtual programs has allowed lots of people to
get the same quality at their own city especially for the working professionals who
now need not worry about quitting employment to further educate themselves.
Yet, it is important to understand that this form is not a complete substitute to a
classroom or personal training but is the most effective training and learning
medium to complement the traditional form of training.

Q3.

What are the advantages of e-learning?

Introduction
E-learning represents convergence in the education, training and information
fields. The term e-learning group together education, training and structure
information delivered by computer / Internet. The recipient of E-learning today is
mostly the adult learners. When we discuss learning design for adults, all our
thinking is based on three more or less universally accepted truths about
learning:

Adults learn differently from children. There is general agreement that this is
true. Andragogy, the science of adult learning, shows that there are valid
approaches, which are specifically valuable when designing learning for adults.
These

include

focus

on

learner-centred

design,

layering

knowledge

development, signposting throughout content, and making strong emotional

connections between learning content and the application of that knowledge.
Individuals learn differently at different times with different content and
different motivations. There has been plenty of interesting work from Piaget to
Honey and Mumford on the way different people learn. This paper doesnt discuss
learning styles, but we believe that all learning should be designed to embrace a
range of content styles wherever possible, to accommodate personal preferences.
Learning can be accelerated and retention improved through the
application of specific techniques and strategies. E-learning design uses
diagnostic tools, information layering, and quick reference tools to accelerate
learning. It uses colour theory, image, text, audio combinations and gaming
theory to improve retention. So, in answer to the question posed E-Learning
design is all about designing the right learning for the right audience, catering
for different learning styles and maximizing the opportunities for effective
learning. E-learning facilities all this and more, offering customization of
programs to suit individual needs.

Following are the advantage of e-learning:

1.

E-Learning makes learning an active experience. No longer a passive

experience. It is learning by doing.

2.

It makes learning exciting, engaging and compelling. Boring subject can

be made easier, more interesting, and appealing.

3.

Advantage of learning through reflection and discussion.

4.

Learning moved from classroom to desktop and now into pocket. By this,
we can make more use of the free time.

5.

E-learning presents an exciting alternative to classroom training that can

save time and money.

6.

No need to spend long periods traveling to a location to attend course

7.

Learning can be assessed day or night whenever we want it at home or

office.

8.

It reduces learning time, and has meant saving on salaries and

opportunity costs to organsiation.

9.

It keeps an organisation agile and competitive in their market.

10.

It empowers learner to manage their own learning and in the most

appropriate way for each learner. Learn in different way i.e. reading,
watching, exploring, researching, doing communication discussing sharing
knowledge and experiences etc.

11.

Advantage of access to a wide range of learning resources both materials

and people.

12.

Encourage students to take responsibility for their learning and

succeeding, builds self-knowledge and self-confidence.

Conclusion:
We should not always looks for the advantage only there are some pitfalls also
to succeed further. There are many advantages of e-learning if we see from the
perceptive of learner, instructors, developers and administrators. Mistakes that
could make e-learning ineffective are likely to happen to any training program.
Through understanding of various models that govern e-learning, one can make
effective use of this method.
