MEDIEVAL MUSICOLOGY RESOURCES

BOOKS
Henry, Derrick. The Listener's Guide to Medieval and Renaissance Music. New
York: Facts on File, 1983.
A chronological overview of medieval and Renaissance music history, covering such
topics as performance practices and well-known schools, movements and composers.
Each chapter ends with an annotated discography.
Kelly, Thomas Forest, The Practice of Medieval Music: Studies in chant and
Performance.
Crooker, Richard, An Introduction to Gregorian Chant. Yale, New Haven.
University Press 2000.
Vogel, Cyrill. Medieval Liturgy: An Introduction to the Sources. 1986
Is an excellent introduction to the study of medieval liturgical sources other than music
books and office books (sizeable lacunae) with its exhaustive bibliographies. It strength
lies in the coverage of early ordines, sacramentaries, lectionaries and pontifical but
ignores chant sources almost completely. Nor does it describe how material in the book
are put together, that is, which piece follows which, how the seasons of the liturgical
year are disposed, in short, what the new comer to medieval manuscript would find
when he or she first encounter the sources themselves.
Hughes, Andrew. Medieval Manuscript for Mass and Office: A Guide to their
Organization and Terminology. 1982.
Useful tool for support and advance studies. It chiefly deals with later medieval missals
and breviaries (the latter are undoubtedly among the most complex of all servicebooks), and is a mine of information about the liturgy.

Phillips, Elizabeth V., and John-Paul Christopher Jackson. Performing Medieval

and Renaissance Music: An Introductory Guide. New York: Schirmer Books;
London: Collier Macmillan Pub., 1986.
An excellent resource. Covers numerous issues for the early music performer including
make-up of an ensemble (e.g. voices, instruments) and performance guidelines such as
rhythm, ornamentation and authenticity. Also provides a suggested repertory with notes
on the original scores used. The appendix lists types of instruments, early music
journals, pronunciation guides and provides a performance checklist

Ultan, Lloyd. Music Theory: Problems and Practices in the Middle Ages and
Renaissance. Minneapolis: U of Minnesota P, 1977.
Intended for undergraduate music students. Very thorough examination and explanation
of the various styles of composition and notation. Includes examples from primary
sources. The chapter on the Renaissance uses works of Josquin, Ockeghem and
Palestrina to illustrate musical forms.
Yudkin, Jeremy, Music in Medieval Europe. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey;1989
Turco, Alberto, Gregorian Chant: Tone and Mode
Berry, Mary, Plaint Chant for Everyone, 1979
Cardine, Eugene, Beginning Studies in Gregorian Chant. (more recommended to
teachers than students)
__________ Semiology 1968 (manual assembled by Cardines students Joppich,
Fischer, Baroffio using the notes of his lectures at the Pontifical Institure. Some
perspectives are now obsolete, but any scholar and conductor should be familiar with
this fundamental text.)
_______ Graduel Neume. (essential for those who wish to study chant seriously. This is
a copy of Cardines private graduate romanum that he used to note his observations in
the margin of the book. For example, he would note that a certain melodic pattern was
used in another piece, that the same word had a similar musical setting, and so on.
Invaluable. And no need of a translation. There are only page numbers and neumes.
_______Beginning studies in Gregorian Chant.
Dom Hourlier, La Notation musicale des chant liturgiques latines. (43 photos of
manuscripts, carefully chosen and commented, can introduce the student into this
suggestive field of investigation.

Rhythmical Significance: A Paleographical and Semiological Study. St. Meinrad,
Indiana: Abbey Press, 1964. 546 pages.
