A: Works Cited
What is it? Why is it important?
YOU MUST document or reference the source of all the ideas which
you have borrowed from another person's work, otherwise you are guilty of
plagiarism or academic dishonesty
To give proper credit to the original source
Think of it as a way of thanking the author for using their work
MLA now considers the website URL to be optional, but at KCSS it is still required.
Identify the type of source (Print. Web. DVD.)
The title Works Cited should the same size font as the list. Do not underline it or type it in bold.
Put the list in alphabetical order according to the authors last name.
Double-space.
If there is no author, alphabetize by the title, using the first word that is not a, an or the.
If there are two authors, the first authors name is inverted, but the second authors name is not. i.e..
Smith, James and Susan Hall
If there are more than two authors, use the first name only, then et al.
If a citation is longer than one line, indent every line after the first line of an entry by 5 spaces. Use
the Hanging indent function. Highlight your entire list. Then under Paragraph, select Line Spacing, then
Line Spacing Options. Under Special, select Hanging, then click OK.
Italicize the title of each source. Put quotation marks around the title of an article or section contained
within a larger work i.e. an encyclopedia article Greece. World Book Encyclopedia.
End each entry with a period. Use brackets around web addresses < >.
