Career Management

7787159

Part 1 Summary:
In this chapter, the author nicely described how to manage career in any organization
when people work in different or new country. The author described cross cultural
career management issues in North American organizations and new North American
perspectives. Career management is little bit difficult. In its people face difficulties,
problems when they dont know rules at work place. Promotion is considered as a form
of recognition and how it is different in mildly and more hierarchical countries on
authors point of views. He also mentioned that what requirements are to do to be
promoted in perspective of power distance, risk tolerance, individualistic and
expressiveness. When new immigrants come to other country, in work place, they
sometimes frustrated because of new work environment. Lateral moves are important in
organization. People also change organizations from time to time. The author also
focused on Pay for performance concept. How it is different in individualisticcollectivistic countries and mildly hierarchical - more hierarchical countries. Reward and
recognition in different perspective also was described very well. In the concept of
aligning with corporate, leadership is very important. Networking, membership with
associations and active participation are also important factors in career management.
Part 2 Reactions:
In multicultural management, people need to take time to accept and adapt new culture
to avoid any misunderstanding. I agree with author that if people are being promoted,
he/she need to be ready to take more responsibilities. According to me, in risk tolerance
countries, people should have to learn that technical knowledge is also important with
interpersonal skills. It is also correct that in individualistic work culture, people become
specialist in their field. People should learn through lateral moves from different
departments in organization and I am with author in this concept. But on the other hand,
if anyone moves on so much from different different organizations, it is not good for
them to getting in any organization easily. It is okay to get more experience from all
different organization but question might arise that why he/she is not staying in one
company for long time period. And it may be drawback for getting new job. I think that
compensation should be based on performance so person who get less, should be
motivated to work hard. My previous work place had followed same scheme for
compensation. I agree that author gave solution for new North American as well as for
organization how to work together to overcome any problems between them.
