Pintor y escultor ecuatoriano nacido en Quito,
1965. Actualmente considerado uno de los
artistas con ms reconocimientos a nivel
nacional e internacional. A expuesto sus obras
en Europa, EE.UU, Asia acaba de recibir la
llave de la ciudad de los ngeles California por
parte del alcalde alcalde Antonio Villaraigosa y
fue declarado visitante ilustre.

Galera de rostros ptreos

Cristbal Ortega ha salido de su pintura de intensa humanidad -ojal no
definitivamente- para hacer hablar la piedra. De bloques rsticos de la
piedra ms humilde, esa que se usa para los cimientos de los edificios,
largamente acariciados con la lija hasta lograr calidades de obscuros
pulimentos, ha evocado rostros. Toda una larga galera de rostros
indoamericanos, de hroes milenarios de estas tierras nuestras. Y as ha
titulado esa galera de rostros ptreos: "Hroes milenarios". Junto a cada
cabeza, a cada rostro, ha inscrito el nombre de esos hroes que han
inspirado esta poderosa empresa de evocacin y creacin.
No es un conjunto de piezas convencionalmente bellas -salvo una: el fino
"Atlacatl", de El Salvador-; ms bien, tienen algo de brbaro. De obscuro.
De obscuro peso de historia soterrada. De ancestralidad recia.
A primera y superficial mirada pudiera parecer coleccin montona de
rostros semejantes. A tal mirada se le habra escapado lo esencial, que es,
exactamente, lo contrario, la diferencia, la peculiaridad.
Por supuesto que hay una constante: de dolor. Dolor recio, recatado, grave.
Pero, en ese mundo tan silencioso y hermtico como el de nuestras gentes
indias, cuntas variaciones no por sutiles menos incitantes!
La expresin del "Rumiahui" es de asombro, casi estupor. Con los ojos muy
abiertos y los labios fruncidos en duro rictus.
El "Abayuba", de Uruguay, tiene gravedad meditabunda.

El "Tpac Amaru", rostro de austero hieratismo, cierra los labios con

dureza, casi crueldad.

En el "Atahualpa" nada heroico. Es el hroe resignado a su suerte, acaso

rendido a la fatalidad de los hados.
"Quilago" es lo femenino en esta galera de reciedumbres.
Y lo es tambin "Dayuma", impresionante en su sugerencia de actitud
yacente, con los ojos cerrados.
Pero, con sus diferencias, ms sugeridas que formuladas, es una galera de
expresiones de dolor. Un dolor asombrado, meditabundo ("Urraca", de
Panam); un dolor que no ha hallado reposo en el sueo ("Tecun Umam", de
Guatemala); dolor colrico ("Carabito" de Costa Rica). Y el "Cuauhtmo" es
visin del estoicismo ante el supremo dolor.
Son hroes. No de una victoria. De una resistencia, vencida pero invencible.
Esa resistencia se ha hecho fuerte en inviolable reducto de

sabiduras

intactas: "Duchicela", el "Abayuba" de Uruguay. Tantos otros!

Y cmo se ha buscado trasmitir el espritu de

cada hroe con solo

rostros?
Y en lajas de piedra que no daban lugar a una expresin volumtrica. Apenas
en alguna pieza sale de lo plano la nariz.
Con los ojos -aun en los casos en que estn cerrados- y con los labios.
Cunto pueden decir de asombro, casi estupefaccin; de meditaciones entre
sombras y obscuramente iluminadas; de angustias domeadas; de clera
invicta, esos ojos de piedra! Y la expresin de los labios, nunca abiertos
para el grito, puede ser de ira, de voluntad resistente indomable, de clera
apenas contenida, de dolor tan hondo e intenso como retenido bajo el gesto
de impasibilidad.

Fue sin duda empresa de pasin y audacia: llegar al espritu de cada hroe
de la resistencia de nuestras nacionalidades indias. Nos confa el artista
que, viajando por Amrica, busc aproximarse a cada una de esas figuras
ancestrales, en las propias tierras patrias en que ellos protagonizaron sus
historias de resistencia.
Y nos confa tambin que le abri caminos hacia esos recnditos interiores
la ayahuasca. Caminos ceremoniales en el trance de la bebida sagrada.
Con todo ello, esta galera de rostros ptreos nos abre las puertas de un
mundo.

Stony faces gallery

Christopher Ortega has left his painting of intense humanity, hopefully not
to speak definitively-stone. From rustic stone blocks humblest, that is used
for building foundations, long-cherished with grades of sandpaper until
dark polishes, faces evoked. Everyone faces a long gallery American
Indians, ancient heroes of this land ours. And so has titled the stony faces
gallery "ancient heroes." Next to each head, each face has entered the
names of these heroes who have inspired this powerful evocation and
creation company.
Not a whole pieces conventionally beautiful-except one: the fine "Atlacatl"
of El Salvador-but rather, have some barbarian. From dark. From dark
weight of history buried. From sturdy ancestry.
At first glance it might seem superficial and monotonous collection of
similar faces. A gaze that would have escaped the essential, which is
exactly the opposite, the difference, the peculiarity.
Of course there is a constant pain. Pain tough, modest, serious. But in that
world so silent and secretive like our Indian people, not by how many subtle
variations less enticing!
The expression "Rumiahui" is amazement, almost stupor. With wide eyes
and pursed lips in hard rictus.
The "Abayub", of Uruguay, has thoughtful gravity.
The "Tupac Amaru", hieratic austere face, lips closed hard, almost cruel.
In the "Atahualpa" anything heroic. The hero is resigned to his fate,
perhaps surrendered to the inevitability of fate.

"Quilago" is feminine in this gallery reciedumbres.

And it is also "Dayuma" breathtaking in its suggestion recumbent attitude,
with his eyes closed.
But, with their differences, they made more suggested, is a gallery of
expressions of pain. A sore amazed, brooding ("Magpie" from Panama), a
pain that has not found rest in sleep ("Tecun Uman", Guatemala); Pain
angrily ("Carabito" of Costa Rica). And "Cuauhtmo" vision of Stoicism is
before the supreme pain.
They are heroes. Not a victory. Of resistance, defeated but invincible.
This resistance has been strong in wisdom inviolable stronghold intact:
"Duchicela", the "Abayub" of Uruguay. So many others!
And how has sought to convey the spirit of each hero with only faces?
And stone slabs that do not give rise to a volumetric expression. Just in one
piece out of the plane's nose.
With eye-even when they are closed, and his lips. How can say with wonder,
almost stupefied; meditations between dimly lit and dark, of anguish tamed;
cholera undefeated, those stone eyes! And the expression of the lips, ever
open to the cry, be angry, indomitable will-resistant, barely contained
anger, sorrow so deep and intense as held under the act of impassivity.
It was definitely passion and daring enterprise: to get the spirit of each
resistance hero of our Indian nationalities. We trust the artist, traveling
across America, sought to approach each of these ancestral figures in their
own homelands where they staged their stories of resistance.
And we are also confident that opened paths to those remote interior
ayahuasca. Ceremonial roads in the throes of the sacred drink.

All in all, this stony faces gallery opens the doors of a world.

Sus dedos crean oro y belleza

Cristbal Ortega es considerado como el nmero uno de la dactilopintura.
A la edad de doce aos, varios adolescentes del colegio Rafael Larrea
decidieron hacer una especie de broma, mientras paseaban por la plaza de la
iglesia de La Merced.
Uno de ellos dijo a Cristbal Ortega que iba a posar como modelo y para que
l pinte su retrato. Eran cerca de las 12h00 y el reto fue aceptado.
Con lpiz en mano y una hoja en blanco, Cristbal Ortega comenz a pintar.
A los pocos minutos, unas 20 personas estaban muy atentas a su alrededor.
A una seora le gust el trabajo que hizo y le dijo si podra retratar a su
hijo. "Me pag 50 sucres y en total realic cinco retratos. Con los 250
sucres que gan, nos fuimos a comer como ricos y tambin compramos
material para hacer ms retratos", recuerda.
La siguiente semana, Ortega lleg muy temprano al mismo sitio donde tuvo
xito. Era jueves y el da estaba precioso. Le fue muy bien pues pint
alrededor de diez cuadros. Igual sucedi 24 horas ms tarde.
As, un nio de apenas 12 aos ya se daba el lujo de ganar 500 sucres
semanales.
Diez aos ms tarde de esa experiencia, su fama ya era tal que la esposa del
entonces presidente de Francia, Francois Mitterrand, lleg a su taller,
ubicado en el volcn del Pululahua y pregunt por l.

especialmente en los crculos de la cultura francesa y, por eso, cuando visit

el Ecuador, dijo

a la gente de protocolo que pusieran en su agenda una visita al taller de este

pintor.

Genes y vocacin
Lo de artista lo tiene en la sangre, pues su abuelo y padre tuvieron que
relacin con el dibujo y la cermica. "Desde nio yo pintaba y en la escuela
gan varios premios", cuenta.
En su afn por conocer ms sobre el arte, por tres aos estudi en el Centro
de Extensin Cultural Universitaria y luego en talleres dictados en la Casa
de la Cultura.
Cuando cumpli 22 aos, tom la decisin de dar un rumbo diferente a su
creacin. Ortega dice que esa decisin no fue una resolucin apurada, sino la
respuesta al llamado de su cuerpo, mente y espritu de crear con sus dedos
y manos, instrumentos que utiliza su cerebro, imgenes que van naciendo.
Fue as como se convirti en el lder de la dactilopintura (pintura con los
dedos).
Confiesa que otro cambio que dio en su vida fue relacionado con el tiempo.
Ya no somete su trabajo a la rapidez, sino que sus obras nacen como
producto de una profunda reflexin y de su imaginacin.

Exterior
Conocido tambin como un hombre de retos, Ortega decidi probar suerte
en el extranjero, a mediados de los aos noventa. En varios pases asombr
por el vigor y energa, por el manejo del color y trazos que realiza con sus
manos y dedos. Sobre su primer viaje, asegur que el mismo se transform

en la llave maestra para una serie de invitaciones. Estuvo en Espaa,

Alemania, Japn, Estados Unidos, por nombrar a algunos pases.
Ortega se califica como un investigador nato y un autodidacta. Los crticos
dicen que de su paleta fluyen colores fuertes, aquellos que se inspiran en la
madre naturaleza y que l los ha tomado en calidad de prstamo para dar
vida a sus gallos, la luna, entre otros elementos naturales.

Luchen por sus sueos

Cristbal Ortega vive en Collacoto, su sitio de inspiracin, pero todos los
das acude a su lugar de trabajo, al Mirador del Pululahua, en donde est su
taller.
Asegura que la Mitad del Mundo tiene algo especial, pues aparte de ser un
sitio espiritual y energtico, envuelve al ser humano en una especie de
armona.
Pide a los jvenes que luchen por sus sueos y que no se dejen vencer por las
adversidades y los comentarios de mala fe. Manifiesta que la crtica sana
siempre es satisfactoria en un artista y por eso hay que estar abierto a los
comentarios.
En una poca de violencia, Ortega invita a los jvenes a creer en un mundo
mejor, en un mundo que sea gobernado por nios, es decir, donde no haya
envidias, violencia y todo sea solidaridad y justicia.
Hace aos, una simple broma lo llev a la fama y no se arrepiente de ello.
Tiene fe en el Ecuador, porque a pesar de los problemas y sinsabores,
todava hay espacio para soar y eso es bueno, porque en los sueos radica
la belleza de la vida.

His fingers create gold and Beauty

Christopher Ortega is considered the number one dactilopintura.
At the age of twelve, several teenagers Rafael Larrea school decided to

on the volcano Pululahua and asked for him.

French first lady had heard much of Ortega, especially in circles of French
culture and, therefore, when visited Ecuador, told people to put protocol in
its agenda a visit to the workshop of the painter.

Genes and vocation

The artist has it in blood, as his grandfather and father had that
relationship with drawing and ceramics. "Since childhood I painted at school
and won several awards," he says. In their quest to learn more about art,
studied for three years at the University Cultural Centre Extension and
then workshops delivered in the House of Culture.
When he was 22, decided to take a different path to its creation. Ortega
said that the decision was not a decision in a hurry, but the response to the
call of your body, mind and spirit to create with your fingers and hands,
instruments using his brain, images are born. That was how he became the
leader of the dactilopintura (finger painting). Confess that another change
that occurred in his life was related to time. You do not submit your work
to the speed, but his works are born as a result of deep thought and
imagination.

Outside
Also known as a man of challenges, Ortega decided to try their luck abroad
in the mid-nineties. In several countries astonished by the force and
energy, by the use of color and strokes you make with your hands and
fingers.
On his first trip, said that it became the master key to a number of
invitations. He was in Spain, Germany, Japan, United States, to name a few

countries..Ortega is described as a born and self-taught researcher. Critics

say his palette of colors flowing strong, those who are inspired by Mother
Nature and that he has taken on loan to give life to their cocks, the moon,
among other elements.

'Fight for your dreams'

Christopher Ortega lives in Collacoto, place of inspiration, but every day go
to their place of work, Pululahua Mirador, where is your shop.
Ensures that the Equator is something special, because apart from being a
spiritual and energetic place, involving human in a kind of harmony.
Ask young people to fight for their dreams and not be overcome by
adversity and comments in bad faith. Is that healthy criticism is always
satisfactory and that an artist must be open to comments. In an era of
violence, Ortega invites young people to believe in a better world, a world
that is ruled by children, ie where there is no jealousy, violence and
everything is solidarity and justice.Years ago, a simple joke led to fame and

and troubles, there is still room to dream and that's good, because in
dreams is the beauty of life.
