PROBLEMS
1. An eye bolt is to be fixed with a machine weighing 9 KN. Find the diameter of the
bolt if the permissible stress on bolt is 20 N/mm[APRIL 2001]
2. A cylinder head of a steam engine is held by 14 bolts the effective diameter of the
cylinder is 350mm, the steam pressure is 0.85 N/mm Find the size of the bolts if
the permissible stress on the bolt is 20N/mm[APRIL 2000]
3. Two shafts are connected by means of a flange coupling to transmit a torque of 30
Nm. The flanges of the coupling are fastened by 4 bolts of the same material at a
radius of 35mm. Find the size of the bolts, If the allowable shear stress for the bolt
material is 30 N/mm[NOV 2000]
4. A cylinder head of steam engine is held by 14 bolts the effective diameter of the
cylinder is 350mm, the steam pressure is 0.85 N/mm Find the size of the bolts if
the permissible stress is 20 N/mm[APRIL 2002] Repeated Q
5. A cylinder head of steam engine is subjected to a steam pressure of 0.7 N/mm it
held in possition by means of 12 bolts. A soft copper gasket whose K = 0.5 is used
to make the joint leak proof. The effective diameter of the cylinder is 300mm. Find
the size of the bolts so that the stress in the bolt is not to exeed to 100
N/mm[NOV 2002]
