PSO Facilitator Guide VISTA History and Legacy

VISTA History and Legacy


7:00–8:00 p.m. (60 minutes)

Session set-up:
• Overhead projector
• LCD panel with sound
• Microphone
• Legacy video
• Tables are to be marked by color/state group. VISTA candidates will sit in their
assigned groupings for both the video and dinner.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:


• Describe the VISTA program and its mission in broad terms
• Identify Corporation staff as program-related resources
• Introduce themselves to other VISTAs and sponsors

CNCS Welcome, Expectations

1. Training Coordinator (CTC) welcomes VISTAs,
introduces state staff, and reviews logistics.

2. TC introduces Regional Training Leader (RTL).

3. RTL introduces facilitators.

One-on-One Introductions
minutes
6 1. RTL introduces session by saying: “People make
minutes lots of choices at different periods of their lives.
You have all chosen to spend the next year of your
life as a VISTA.”
9 2. RTL asks participants to go around the room and
minutes speak with three different people about why they
chose to become a VISTA member at this point in
their lives.

3. RTL allows three minutes for each conversation


and indicates when participants should begin a
new conversation.

VISTA Legacy Video & Activity
minutes
1. Training Coordinator or RTL introduces and
shows video.
2. State office staff read four VISTA impact facts
aloud.
3. RTL asks VISTA participants to discuss the video
at their tables and invites them to talk about what
they see as their mission and role.
4. RTL has the group popcorn out the answers.

5. RTL advises the group that this conversation will


continue in the morning.
Note to Facilitator

No need to chart group’s answers. Facilitators can


leave this session after the introductions.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Ask VISTA candidates if they have their VISTA


Assignment Descriptions (VADs) and ask supervi-
sors if they have their Project Plans with them. If not,
direct them to sign up sheets. CNCS State Office
staff will use the sheets to follow up so participants'
VADs and Project Plans are faxed to the training
immediately.

6. RTL invites VISTA candidates to stay and network


if they'd like to.
