A&B has a chat with Larry:
How did you get started in the industry?

It was by accident actually. Id graduated from
Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Biotechnology.
After serving National Service (NS), I realised I did not
want to be confined in a laboratory doing biotechnology
research work; biotech sales didnt appeal to me either.
I went through the papers and found out that Clinique
was looking for part-timers, so I applied to work there.
It was from there that I discovered I enjoyed painting
faces and bringing my subjects beauty from inside out.
What keeps you going?

The desire to educate and empower people about
makeup; to allow them to embrace their beauty, and
not some synthesised image of a popular look.
Where do you draw inspiration from?

Everything. From my favourite makeup artists like
Kabuki and Alex Box, to what surrounds us, to cultural
uses of colour and makeup. All evoke emotions from
which I draw my inspirations.

The most recent one is from New York Fashion
Week and London Fashion Week during September
2014:
The backstage madness, plus the opportunity to be
educated while working with amazing makeup artists
like Yadim for Maybelline, Sarah Lucero of Stila, Lan
Nguyen-Grealis for The Body Shop UK and the Kevyn
Aucoin NYFW team, gave me a thrill. The manipulation
of products and the explanation of how each look was
created just sent chills down my spine.
The Korean-inspired cat-eye flick trick is actually

nothing new and it might not necessarily suit everyone.
Its really about manipulation of eye liner for your eye
shape. Many blindly follow the trend and create horrors
on their faces instead of enhancing their own looks.
What makeup advice would you offer singlelidded ladies?

Embrace your single eyelids. This obsession with
having double eyelids is ridiculous; the whole eyelid
area can be used for makeup. If you think you need
double eyelids for beautiful eye makeup, do take a
look at some of the work Ive done on mono-lidded
Asian eyes.

Makeup is one of the items in the modern womans toolkit to
look good. However, it can also have the reverse effect!
Angie Soon of Cosmoprof Academy tells you what NOT to do.
ince time immemorial, women had been using makeup to

enhance our faces. Archaeological evidence of cosmetics
were found dating back to ancient Greece and Egypt. We
all know about Nefertiti the ancient Egyptian Queen from
1320 BC whose famous bust showed her eyes to be lined
with black eyeliner.
Conceal and hide, contouring and shading
It is all the rage to use concealer to hide circles under the eyes or to go all out to sculpt
the face with highlighting and shading ala Kim Kardashian. But if used with a heavy hand,
or the wrong shade, the effect might look garish instead of beautiful under natural light.
The best way forward is to use a light touch for concealers and to skip the contouring all
together in your everyday makeup. Spread concealer only in areas that need coverage.
Choose a shade just one shade lighter than your skin tone, and apply evenly at the under
eye area. As most of us have yellow in our skin, chose a yellow based concealer instead of
pink tone.
Start with
the Right
Foundation
Some women apply too much,

and some too little. Just the right
amount of foundation in the best
texture for your skin type will
really bring out the beauty of your
skin. Foundation serves to even
out colour and hide blemishes.
As a general guide if you have dry
skin, do try out fluid foundation.
Some formulas even contain antiageing ingredients. Women with
dry skin should not use two way
cake foundation, as the powder
tend to creep into fine lines around
the eyes and mouth.
The key to looking fresh and
hydrated is to
start makeup on
a clean face. You
need to apply a light moisturiser, prior to putting on makeup.
Moisturiser will ensure that your
foundation will glide on smoothly
and evenly, thus reducing that
cakey look.

Lipstick

Liner
If you use lip liner, the

pencil liner should not
look obvious. Its safest
to choose a lip liner
colour as close to your
natural lip shade as
possible. The lip liner
should be blended
into the lip stick.
Powder
You can skip powder if you have dry skin.

Too much powder on dry skin in an air-conditioned environment will result in a cakey
look. On the other hand if you have oily skin,
a light dusting of loose powder will help to
lessen the shine and make the makeup last
longer.
Applying Blusher in
the Wrong Area
A common mistake is to apply blusher too

high or too low on the cheek, or to apply a
blusher colour that is too bright. The desired look is to look naturally rosy, as if you
have been enjoying lots of fresh air. To add
a warm glow choose a natural blush colour
and apply to the apples of your cheeks.
Blend up towards the hairline then downwards to soften the colour.
Too Much Eye Liner
Another common mistake is to use too

much eye liner. Once you are past a certain
age, too much eye liner looks dated. For
instance black liquid eye liner used only

on the bottom lash line looks too harsh.
A better way would be to use a black/grey
pencil and focus on the corners of the upper and lower lash line. Blend / smudge
it precisely to get the effect of wider looking eyes.
Shimmery
Makeup
Shimmers and glitter makeup look best

on young skin. Best to skip shimmery eyeshadow as they can make eyes look tired.

What are stretch marks and what causes them?

Stretch marks or Striae are actually linear scars presenting as
long, narrow stripes or lines that develop on the surface of the
body with an off-color tone. Stretch marks can appear when there
is rapid stretching of the skin. The top layer of the skin (epidermis)
is thinned and there are collagen breaks in the second layer of the skin
giving rise to its distinctive appearance and texture. Stretch marks are most
commonly located on the breasts, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and
flank.
There are several causes of stretch marks, including:
GENETICS:Women are more likely to get belly stretch marks if their
mother, for instance, had stretch marks after pregnancy.
SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT GAIN AND LOSS:

Your skin stretches as your weight fluctuates,
sometimes resulting in stretch marks.
PUBERTY:Growth spurts during puberty often
result in stretch marks as the skin is unable to
keep up with the bodys rate of growth.
BODYBUILDING:Rapid development of muscle
mass may stretch the skin beyond its limits.
CORTICOSTEROIDS:Heavy or long-term use
of oral or topical corticosteroids, a widely used
pharmaceutical steroid compound, can lead to
stretch mark formation.
ETHNICITY:People with darker skin are less
likely to have stretch marks.
What are the different types of

stretch marks?
A simple way to classify stretch
marks regardless of its origin
or location is by colour. Stretch
marks appear as parallel streaks of red,
thinned, glossy skin that over time become
whitish and scar-like in appearance. The stretch
marks may be slightly depressed and have a
different texture than normal skin.
Red or purple stretch marks are easier to treat,
because the skin is still in the process of trying
to heal. However, older stretch marks may
still be treated and a combination treatment
approach is necessary.
Based on your experience, what

are some of the best treatments
for stretch marks?
Its important to say that there
are no large randomised clinical
studies that evaluate treatments of stretch
marks. Many published studies are limited to
subjective evaluation of a treatment or topical
medication, and many of the treatments
described below are also based on our clinic
experience.
When the stretch marks are still new (red),
intensive moisturisation of the lesions and the
use of vitamin C, fruit acids, retinols, and other
pharmaceuticals have been shown to have some
improvement. Some laser procedures described

below are also helpful in

facilitating the improvement
and healing of the stretch
marks.
As the stretch marks
turn white, we will do a
combination of treatments as
described below:
1.) Laser Genesis, an FDA
approved treatment that
has no downtime which can
gradually build collagen, improves skin texture
as well as the appearance of stretch marks with
repeated treatments. In a study with this laser,
55% of patients reported excellent improvement

2.) Trilipo, which is a form of radiofrequency
treatment with clinical studies demonstrating
collagen building without downtime. In a study
evaluating the effectiveness of this system
on stretch marks, up to 75% improvement in
stretch marks were described.
3.) Dermapen, which is a microneedling device
that creates new collagen and elastin. The
skin needling breaks the fibrous and uneven
scar tissue and stimulates growth of new tissue.
We typically combine this procedure with Laser
Genesis as our experience suggests collagen
building with multiple approaches provides
better results.

Are these treatments suitable for

everyone?
These treatments are all US FDAcleared safe and effective for all
skin types. However, like other
treatments, there are several contraindications/
precautions necessary particularly for pregnant
patients.
How many treatments are
recommended for good results?
The number of recommended
treatments will vary on the
extent, age and depth of the
stretch marks. We will generally start with two
to five sessions of the Dermapen, combined
with a similar number of sessions for the Laser
Genesis. For Trilipo, clinical studies suggest six
or more weekly sessions. The good thing is that
these treatments have minimal or no downtime,
and are generally comfortable procedures.

I guess you can call it serendipity.
It started with the frustration of
not being able to find the brands
that I love in Singapore, followed
by a curiosity that got me
hunting down multi-label stores
here. Then a chance encounter
happened when I was in New
York and everything started
falling into place!
What is it really like to shop

for a living and do you always
get first pickings at your
collection?
Almost everyone I know thinks
that its a dream job to do what
I love, which is shopping. But to
shop for a store, means you no
longer shop for yourself; instead
you shop for the customers and
thats a whole new experience.
Im definitely still learning along
the way via customers feedback,
and being always out sourcing.
Ive also been disappointed when
I brought in the wrong brand
for the Singapore market, but I
guess thats all part and parcel
of learning.

I dont think there is an ideal et-i-kit
girl. We always believe that dressing

cne is a common skin condition that is characterised by

whiteheads, blackheads, greasiness and red pimples on the
face, neck, back and upper chest. These areas have the greatest
population of oil glands. In people affected by acne, their oil
glands are overactive and this leads to the clogging of pores and
oil glands with oil and dead skin cells, bacterial overgrowth and inflammation of the oil glands.
I am in my thirties and I noticed recently that I have pimples on my face. Isnt acne a
condition that only teenagers get?
While it is true that acne occurs mostly during the teenage years (affecting over 90% of
teenagers), acne during the adult years is becoming more and more prevalent these days.
Adult acne affects women more often than men, occurring in 1 out of 4 men and as high as 1
out of 2 women. Furthermore, one does not need to have teenage acne to experience adult
acne.
Why does acne occur in adults?

The exact cause of adult is not fully understood. However here are some of the factors
triggering and aggravating adult acne:
Hormonal fluctuation, especially in women
Lifestyle changes and stress
Usage of certain make-up formulations causing clogging of the pores
Medication like anti-epilepsy drugs, mood stabiliser drugs and steroids. Examples of steroids are
birth control pills, anabolic steroids for muscle building; steroids for managing long term inflammatory conditions.
Medical conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Genetic tendency individuals with a family history of acne are at a higher risk of developing acne.
Do diet and lifestyle play a role in the occurrence of acne?

There is some evidence that suggests that consuming a lot of high glycemic index food
(i.e. refined carbohydrate, sugar and starch) may aggravate acne. As mentioned earlier,
lifestyle and work stress can aggravate acne. Using heavy makeup and leaving them on
overnight can increase clogging of the pores and in turn aggravate acne.

Is it necessary to see a doctor for acne problems?

Arent over-the-counter solutions effective
enough?
Acne is a very complex condition that varies greatly in
severity and appearance. It can be as mild as a minor
crop of white heads with no inflammation or it can be very
severe with multiple eruptions of inflamed nodules, pus
filled cysts and scars covering the whole face.
In view of the fact that acne can be severe, over-thecounter solutions are far from adequate in dealing with
anything more than an occasional zit or two. I think its
alright to use over-the-counter products like cleansers
and pimple spot applications initially when the person is
experiencing very mild acne.
scarring from acne is to treat and control the acne as early

as possible.
If scars are already present, the best way to treat them is
through laser resurfacing therapy and needle subcision,
which is a needling technique that cuts and frees up scar
fibres that are pulling the skin downwards causing pits
and depressions.
What sort of skin cleansing/maintenance regime is

best suited for acne skin?
Its a common misconception that just keeping the skin
clean is enough to control acne. Acne per se is not just
related to poor hygiene. Acne is related to excessive oil
produced by the skins oil glands, the development of
whiteheads/blackheads and subsequent inflammation of
these whiteheads/blackheads due to bacterial overgrowth.
He or she should consider seeing a doctor if the acne

starts to get worse and the earlier, the better. The doctor
can assess the status of the acne and determine the
level of treatment that is needed. The key to managing
acne is early detection and aggressive intervention where
appropriate in order to prevent serious effects of acne
such as pigmentation changes, scarring, disfigurement
and psychological disturbance.
With this in mind, I would recommend a good cleanser

that would effectively clean the skin and clear away
surface oil but not dry the skin. Secondly, use skin
products and medication to control the formation of
whiteheads and inflammation. Your doctor can advise you
on this.
What is the best way to prevent scarring from

acne? What if I already have scars?
Scarring develops when the skin is so damaged by the
acne inflammation that the affected skin cannot regenerate
normally and is replaced by fibrous scar tissue.
In more severe cases, oral antibiotics like doxycycline or

retinoids like isotretinoin are prescribed by the doctor.
Treatment procedures like Theraclear light and vacuum
suction therapy and salicylic acid skin peels are useful in
expediting the clearance of acne.
Curbing the acne inflammation as quickly as possible to

prevent or minimise irreversible damage to the skin and
preventing new inflamed acne lesions from erupting is
the key to preventing scarring. So the best way to prevent

Our emphasis is on double non-silicone. For other
non-silicone brands, usually just the shampoo is non-silicone

using silicone in our treatment products as well, to preserve
the natural beauty of hair and minimise damage. We use
nourishing ingredients like organic oil to substitute silicone.
In particular, Ben Premium Bluria has various kinds of clays
from Morocco which help absorb and remove dirt and grease
thoroughly. For Ben Premium Rougeria, organic oils with
high moisturising and damage repair power are used. Both
products have vegetable enzymes which are good for cleansing

nickname from your patients?
Dr Needle was a nickname given to me by a patient.
She had a fear of needles and even wore a t-shirt with
the words, Dont Make Me Cry when she came to see
me. I promised her that I will inject her with no trauma
and bruising, and delivered my promise. My aim is to
minimise pain for all my patients, even make them enjoy
needles threads being inserted into their faces without
sedation!

What is your secret to performing such skillful

The quality of the threads and needle are very important
because they determine the outcome and the end result
of skin rejuvenation with collagen stimulation as the
threads dissolve over time underneath the skin.
Next, the technique of needle insertion is very important
to minimise pain and I treat patients skin like beancurd
giving them a soft gentle touch to reduce their fear of
injection.
WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?

We offer different treatments for anyone between 20 to 70 years

The process of transformation takes about six weeks to six months

WHAT IS DOUBLO AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

DOUBLO (pronounced dub low) is a breakthrough
Korean aesthetic treatment for non-invasive facial contouring,
skin tightening and skin rejuvenation. DOUBLO utilises HIFU
energy which is a highly precise medical procedure originally
developed to treat prostate cancer rapidly and non-invasively.
HIFU uses ultrasound energy - which many are familiar with
when having a scan of their liver or gall bladder, or baby inside a
womb! As we all know, this ultrasound energy is completely safe
and harmless. However by increasing the power and focusing
it like we used to do as children, using a magnifying glass to
create a small fire on a piece of paper, the ultrasound can be
delivered accurately to a specific area.
After HIFU is generated by the DOUBLO device, it is then
delivered via the DOUBLO transducer to a pre-set depth. This
HIFU energy then induces a vibration in the molecules of the
targeted area which leads to thermal (heat) energy being
produced and thus creating a thermal coagulation zone.

HOW CAN HIFU PRODUCE THE RESULTS THAT ARE

AESTHETICALLY SOUGHT BY PATIENTS?
First of all, for tightening and lifting of the lower face and neck,
the HIFU is delivered accurately to what is known as the SMAS
layer (fibrous layer just above the muscle layer). This SMAS
layer is very tough giving it more tightening potential and thus
traditionally used in more invasive facelift procedures to lift
and tighten the face or neck. By creating the above mentioned
thermal coagulation zones on this SMAS layer, wound healing
and subsequent constriction of the SMAS leads to a tighter and
firmer treatment area.
Secondly, for skin tightening and rejuvenation, when the HIFU is
delivered to the deep dermis (lower skin) layer, where collagen
and other structures in charge of elasticity are located, the
thermal coagulation zones lead to remodeling of collagen and
subsequent firming and rejuvenation of the treatment area.
WHAT AREAS CAN I TREAT?

DOUBLO can be used almost anywhere on the face and
neck but by treating strategic key areas using certain vectors for
lifting; we can achieve more satisfactory results. For example,
treating areas around the eyes and above the eyebrow can
produce tighter skin and less droopy eyebrows giving a more

alert and youthful appearance. Other treatments include: mild
double chin reduction, V-line contouring for ill-defined jawlines,
lifting of sagging cheeks/jowls, eyebrow lifting and of course
general skin rejuvenation.
In the near future we are expecting a new transducer, which will be
able to treat at deeper depths allowing lifting and tightening of areas
other than the face and neck.
CAN DOUBLO REPLACE A FACE LIFT?

When it comes to non-invasive or minimally invasive
procedures in general, it is vital that patients understand the pros
and cons involved. Yes, the advantages are less no pain, bleeding,
downtime, and/or complications. However it is very difficult to
produce results as dramatic or obvious as a normal surgery. In
other words, expectations must be realistic before going through
with any non- or minimally invasive procedure.
HOW DOES A DOUBLO PROCEDURE COMPARE TO

OTHER LIFTING TREATMENT DEVICES LIKE ULTHERA OR
THERMAGE?
Compared to Ulthera (which also uses HIFU technology), the spot
sizes of the HIFU produced by DOUBLO are larger which provides
a larger treatment area with the same number of shots. Also, by
utilising this larger spot size and consistent power production, the
pain felt by the patient per shot is minimised.
Also, as already stated, DOUBLO targets the SMAS layer, which
is just above the muscle layer. So far, no laser or radiofrequency
device (including Thermage) is able to reach this deeper SMAS
layer, which is more fibrous than the skin layer and produces
greater pulling or tightening potential. Therefore the contraction
and constriction power produced by DOUBLO can be said to give
more lasting and effective results than other devices, which only
target the skin layer.
To reduce pain, numbing cream is usually applied for 30-60

minutes before the procedure but there is no need for timeconsuming immediate-post treatment care.
WHAT KIND OF RESULTS DO YOU GET AND HOW LONG

WILL IT LAST?
You should be able to see tighter and firmer skin immediately
after the procedure, but the results will continue to improve
over the next 4-6 weeks as the wound healing process on the
SMAS produces more contraction/tightening and remodeling of
collagen in the dermis produces more elasticity and rejuvenation
of the skin.
The result should last for about one year, however it is dependent
on the patients severity of condition and tolerance to discomfort
during the procedure.
WHAT DOES THE DOUBLO TREATMENT FEEL LIKE AND IS

THERE ANY DOWNTIME?
Patients may feel a slight prickling, poking, and/or heat
sensation during the procedure. After application of numbing
cream, the discomfort is usually very tolerable. If not, there
are different settings and methods, which can be utilised and
adjusted to minimise discomfort without compromising efficacy.
There is usually no downtime and patients can resume their
activities immediately after treatment.
Some patients may have mild redness (pinkish) for 1-2 hours
but this will subside on its own. There also may be some mild
dull pain in the treated areas for 1-2 days after
the treatment in the SMAS treated areas.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR DOUBLO?

The great thing about DOUBLO is that it can be done on
almost any skin type. Just as the sunlight passing through the
magnifying glass will not cause injury except at the focusing point,
the HIFU energy of DOUBLO does not cause injury to the skin
surface it passes through. Therefore the conventional limitations
for other laser treatments such as sensitive skin, frequent sun
exposure and active outdoor activities become almost obsolete.
I would say any male or female in their mid-30s to late-50s can
consider doing this treatment. Of course the severity (or nonseverity) of your condition must be assessed regardless of your age
before it is possible to decide if you are suitable for the treatment.
Other causes may be the root of the problem, which may not be
addressed with DOUBLO.
HOW LONG DOES THE DOUBLO TREATMENT TAKE?

It depends greatly on the severity of the condition and area to be
treated. A full face and neck treatment can take 45-60 minutes.

The responsibilities of modern women can take their toll, even on the best of us.
Lava Yoga, a women-only hot yoga studio from Japan shows five asanas or yoga
poses that can help us towards a better well-being.
Malasana
Pose 1: Garland Pose

Malasana derives its name from the Sanskrit word mala
which means garland. This asana is known to invoke a sense of
calmness and because it is done in a squatting position, it also
improves strength particularly to the lower back and core.
How-to: Start by bending the knees and sitting in a squat
position. Position your arms with elbows touching on the inside
of your knees or thighs. Bring your palms together in front of
your chest while keeping your spine straight and shoulders
relaxed. Remember to focus on your breathing.
Benefits: The Garland Pose is known to tone the abdominals
and stretches the groin, ankles and back. It also strengthens
the pelvic floor, which in turn may reduce the problem of
incontinence for mature practitioners. With regular practice,
this asana alleviates fatigue and tiredness while improving your
metabolism.

Navasana
Pose 2: Boat Pose

The term Navasana is derived from the Sanskrit words nava which
means, boat. This asana may look challenging but with focus and
steady breathing, it is relatively easy to perform.
How-to: Start in a sitting position with your legs outstretched and
knees together. Bend and hold the back of your knees or thighs. Now
lean back slightly and gently so that you rest on the back edge of your
sit bones. Keep your shoulders away from your ears and your back
as straight as possible. Maintain a focal point with your gaze, inhale
and slowly lift your feet a few inches off the ground. Adopt a steady
breathing pattern as you find your balance. Slowly raise your feet to the
height of your knees and once youre comfortable, gently extend your
legs fully. Continue with the steady breathing and slowly let go of your
hold on the back of the knees or thighs. Keep your arms straight.
Benefits: The Boat Pose strengthens the abdominal muscles, hips
and thighs. These in turn will increase your core strength significantly.
Apart from improving balance co-ordination and focus, this asana also
encourages better digestion. It is also known to stimulate the kidneys
and thyroids for better health.
Pose 3: Childs Pose

The name Balasana is derived from the Sanskrit words bala and
asana, which means child and pose respectively. This asana is
widely regarded as the most calming and therapeutic of yoga poses.
How-to: Start in a kneeling position on the yoga mat with your knees
together. Gently sit back so your buttocks go towards or touch your
heels. Inhale deeply and as you exhale, slowly stretch your arms
and body forward so your stomach rests on the thighs and your
forehead touches the mat. Ideally, you will feel a mild stretch in your
shoulders, buttocks and down the length of your spine and arms. It is
important to keep your shoulders and neck relaxed so ease into this
asana as comfortably as you can get.
Benefits: The Childs Pose helps to release tensions in the back,
shoulders and chest. Its an effective remedy for dizziness, fatigue
and can relieve neck and lower back pain. When performed correctly,
it can alleviate stress and anxiety as well as it calms the mind,
encouraging strong and steady breathing.
Pose 4: Downward-Facing Dog

The Downward-Facing Dog or Adho Mukha Svanasana is one of
the poses in the traditional Sun Salutation sequence. The name is
derived from the Sanksrit words adho meaning down, mukha
meaning face and svana which means dog.
How-to: Start in a kneeling position on the yoga mat with your hands
beneath the shoulders and knees beneath the hips. Curl your toes
so that the balls of your feet are pressing against the mat. Lift your
hips slowly towards the ceiling until your body forms an inverted
V. Gently press your chest towards your knees; keeping your eyes
focused on your toes and slowly place your heels on the mat. If your
heels dont touch the mat, bend your knees slightly but keep the
hips lifted and pressed back while pressing your hands forward. You
can slowly work on pressing your heels to touch the floor by slowly
straightening your legs. You should feel a stretch on your calves,
hamstrings and spine. Remember to breathe comfortably.
Benefits: The slight compression involved in the Downward-Facing
Dog encourages the digestive function of the spleen, liver and
kidneys. Also, as it is a mild inversion - where the heart is higher
than the head - this asana provides relief from headaches, fatigue,
insomnia and even mild depression. Regular practice also promotes
better mental clarity, alleviates back pain and can even prevent
osteoporosis.
Adho Mukha Svanasana
Pose 5: Side-Twist
The Side-Twist asana is a sitting side-twist. The name is derived
from the Sanskrit words parivtta meaning to turn or revolve and
trikona which means triangle. Its usually performed standing up
but can also be done seated.
How-to: Begin by being seated with your legs out stretched. Raise and
hold your arms out so that they are perpendicular to your legs. Hold the
outside of the right foot with your left hand and slowly lift your right leg
up to chest level. Place your right hand behind your buttocks with your
arm straight so you can prop yourself up and keep your back straight.
Inhale and lengthen your spine. As you exhale, turn your torso to the
right until your shoulders are in-line with your legs. If you feel steady,
you can stretch your right arm out as well. Stay here for up to five full
breaths and switch.
Benefits: The Side-Twist pose stretches the spinal muscle, increasing
the spinal range of motion. It also expands the chest and shoulders
as well as hips musculature. This asana can also relieve upper back
tension and is also thought to stimulate abdominal organs.

The Paleo diet is purported to reduce inflammation and reduce our chances of
developing lifestyle diseases. Fact or fad? Naturopath Eugene He tells us more.
o what is Paleo?
The Paleo Diet, or Paleolithic diet, also called the Caveman diet, is based on the
principle that our body is designed for the same foods that our hunter gatherer
ancestors used to eat. Due to modernisation and the rise of agriculture and
processed foods, there is a hypothesis that the digestive system of humans have
yet to evolve to consume certain foods effectively, thus resulting in diseases such as obesity, heart
disease, diabetes and cancer. The belief is that by switching to the original caveman diet, we can then
reduce inflammation and ultimately reduce the chances of developing lifestyle diseases.
As this theory is relatively new, there are no long-term studies of people on the Paleo diet to
substantiate any claims. As with all trending diets, the Paleo diet has its fair share of controversy
and criticism. However, a well-executed Paleo diet can be nutritionally sound, low in carbohydrate
calories and devoid of any processed foods.

do here, paleo cafes are springing
up all over Australia and USA as
we speak. I first came across this
diet eight years ago when I was
researching on the different types
of cultural and ancestral diets of
modern man. In 2013, I started
experimenting with this diet and have
since adapted it to our local context.
Paleo in a nutshell
WHAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED:

1 All grains and grain products
(rice, wheat, corn, quinoa, barley,
corn) contains anti-nutrients and
promotes inflammation and bowel
irritation
2 Legumes (beans, peas, peanuts,
soy) same as grains
3 Refined and artificial sweeteners
(sugar, corn syrup, aspartame,
sucralose) linked to lifestyle
diseases
4 Most vegetable oils (corn, soy,
sunflower, peanut, canola)
comes from legumes or are
heavily processed
5 Dairy milk promotes inflammation

WHAT IS ALLOWED:
1 Unrestricted amounts of vegetables
but limit starchy vegetables like
sweet potatoes and taro.
2 Whole fruits and moderate amount
of juice from low sugar containing
fruits.
3 Lean cuts of meat from grass fed
animals.
4 Seafood and shellfish.
5 Nuts and seeds.
6 Cold-pressed oils (olive, coconut,
walnut, sesame, macadamia,
hazelnut, avocado).
7 Butter from grass fed cows is
allowed.
8 Natural whole sweeteners
in moderation (raw honey,
unprocessed maple syrup, coconut
sugar, stevia).
Like our early ancestors, you are
recommended to rotate and consume
through a wide range of different
foods rather than sticking to staples.

Paleo pad thai

(Serves 2-3)
INGREDIENTS:
4 cups zucchini noodles*
2 whole eggs (beaten)
2 whole eggs (hard boiled)
3 cooked soft shell crabs or 1 cup
prawns (boiled and shelled)
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 minced shallot
4 cloves minced garlic
1 teaspoon shrimp paste (optional)
1 tablespoon tamarind paste
2 tablespoons coconut sugar (or
honey)
2 tablespoons fish sauce
1 cup bean sprouts
1 large lime
3 tablespoons crushed cashew
nuts
Few stalks of spring onions
Chili powder
METHOD:
1) Cut hard boiled eggs into cubes
and set aside.
2) Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil
in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add beaten eggs in
and swirl around to create an
omelette. Cook for 2 minutes
on one side and then flip over.
Continue cooking for another 2
minutes and remove from heat.
3) Allow omelette to cool before
cutting into 1 inch thick strips.
4) Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil
in a wok over medium heat. Add
shallot, garlic and shrimp paste.
Stir fry until fragrant.
5) Add tamarind paste, coconut
sugar and fish sauce. Mix well
and then add zucchini noodles,
hard boiled eggs, omelette, bean
sprouts and boiled prawns. If
using soft shell crab, serve crab
by the side in final step.
6) Stir fry until ingredients are
well combined and immediately
transfer to serving plates.
7) Garnish each serving with lime,
cashew nuts, spring onion and
chilli powder.
* To make zucchini noodles, use
a spiralizer, julienne slicer or
simply cut to thin slivers with
a knife.

Chia Jelly
(Serves 4)
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups coconut water
1 tablespoon maple syrup
cup chia seeds
4 large strawberries, hulled and
chopped
cup coconut milk
METHOD:
1. In a bowl or glass jar,
combine coconut water,
maple syrup, chia seeds and
strawberries. Stir, cover,
and refrigerate for at least 2
hours or preferably overnight.
2. To serve, transfer to
individual serving bowls
or glasses and drizzle with
coconut milk.
Stuffed
Squid with
Mango Sauce
(Serves 3-4)
INGREDIENTS:
4 whole squid (head removed and washed)
150 g minced pork
1 cup cauliflower, chopped
2 tablespoons chopped spring onion
1 teaspoon lime juice
Half teaspoon grated ginger
Half teaspoon sea salt
Half teaspoon pepper
Olive oil
Half mango, peeled
2 teaspoon chopped cilantro
METHOD:
1) In a medium bowl, combine pork, cauliflower, spring onion, lime juice, ginger,
salt and pepper. Mix well.
2) Stuff mixture into squid and secure
opening with a toothpick.
3) Add olive oil to a hot skillet or grill pan
over medium heat. Carefully place
squid onto skillet and sear for 2 minutes on each side. Bring heat down to
medium and allow squid to cook for another 5 minutes or until center is firm.
4) Remove from heat and allow to cool
slightly before cutting to thick slices.
5) Serve with mango sauce.
6) Mango sauce: Puree mango with food
processor or with a fork. Add cilantro
and mix well.

Service is stellar too. When my husband felt peckish before making a trip down to Seminyak which is an hour
away, the staff actually packed a goodie bag filled with crackers and nuts for him to munch on in the car! There
are also thoughtful touches like refreshing face mist, cool cucumber body milk and insect repellent on every table
in the restaurants. They also acceded to my request for a late checkout on my last day as my flight was only in the
evening, allowing me to enjoy my wonderful room just a little more.
When we were there, we witnessed a couple exchanging their wedding vows in their Cliff-edge Sunset Cabana,
an overhanging cliffside platform with a dramatic view over the Indian Ocean, making for a truly spectacular
experience, not to mention photos! In fact, every corner in this resort is Instagram-worthy, and I soon joined the
many snap-happy guests, and flooded my social media feeds with stunning photos, inciting major travel lust in
my friends. Although it rained during most of our time in Bali, I was more than happy to stay in my villa, curled

This is not a diet but a lifestyle

Being a vegan, eating mostly raw is a long process
and does not happen overnight. Some people take
longer to transit to a raw vegan lifestyle, you have
to listen to how your body feels and eat accordingly.I would
not call this a diet, as you want to focus on your energy
level and health. Feeling good is more important than
looking good. Once you feel good and are bursting with
energy, you will naturally be in great shape.
Health is your foundation
Everything we do in life is dependent on our
health. Time, family, friendship, love, or even
money we cannot enjoy any of these without
our health. We need to be sure we take our health seriously
before it is too late. Prevention is always better than cure.
Healthy does not mean expensive
Apart from juicing or blending organic baby
spinach and all types of berries, not everything
has to be organic. Please do not let the word
organic stop you from wanting to be healthy even with
a tight budget. You are worth every penny spent for your
health and well-being. Treat this as an investment for your
body in the long run and avoid expensive medical bills.
Add variety to your daily foods
Eat the colours of the rainbow, try out new exotic
fruits or introduce yourself to other greens,
besides spinach. It is essentialto always make
your meals interesting and fun. The more you enjoy what
you eat, the more you will stick to it in the long run.
Raw food transition plan
Start off your day with my beginners guide to
raw foods. Try to incorporate more fruits and
vegetables into your diet daily and gradually
increase the amount being consumed. Here are my
recommendations:
Breakfast: Green smoothie (recipe on the left)
Tea break: An assorted plate of fruits you love
Before dinner: Green juice in the late evening
Dinner: as per normal but do try to avoid fried foods and
desserts at the very least.

1 cup of kale or baby spinach
