PRESSURE FILTERS
SF SERIES

TECHNICAL DATA
STAUFF high pressure filters are designed for in-line hydraulic applications,
with a maximum operating pressure of
6000 psi (420 bar). Used together with
STAUFF filter elements, a high efficiency
of contaminant removal is assured. The
high dirt holding capacity of the
elements ensures long service life and, as
a result, reduced maintenance.

VALVE OPTIONS
The optional valves are fitted as an insert in the filter head and incorporate the spigot on which the element seals.
The valve is selected to suit the filter application.
HV - O

Non-bypass standard insert with no valve

function. High collapse elements 3000 psi (210
bar p) are normally used with this valve.

HV - B

Bypass valve which allows oil to bypass the

element when the differential pressure across the
element reaches 87 psi +7 psi (6+0.5 bar). (Other
pressure settings available on request). The
opening pressure should be higher than the p
setting of an optional contamination indicator.
Low collapse 430 psi (30 bar p) elements are
normally used with this valve.

HV - R

HV - N

Non-return valve This valve prevents the oil

in the delivery line from draining out while
the filter is being serviced. High collapse
elements 3000 psi (210 bar p) are normally
used with this valve.

HV - M

Multi-function valve This valve combines

the by-pass, the reverse flow, and the nonreturn functions in one unit. The by-pass
opening pressure is 87 psi +7psi (6+0.5 bar)
p with other opening pressures available on
request. The opening pressure should be
higher than the p setting of an optional
contamination indicator.

Reverse flow valve is used in systems where there

is flow in reverse through the filter. It allows
reverse flow without back-flushing the element
but does not filter in the reverse direction. High
collapse elements 3000 psi (210 bar p) are
normally used with this valve.

CONTAMINATION INDICATORS
STAUFF pressure filters have a range of contamination indicators available as an option. If no indicator is specified, the port is sealed
by a plug (HI - O). The contamination indicators are actuated by the differential pressure (p) across the element and the special
piston design minimizes the effects of peak pressures in the system. An optional thermostatic lockout (thermo-stop) is available to
prevent false indication under cold start conditions. Fluid temperature must be at least 68F (20C) for the indicator to function.

Visual contamination indicators are available in the

following configurations:
Manual reset

The indicator continues to display contamination even through the p may

have fallen. Pressing the plastic cover
down will reset the indicator.

Automatic reset

The contamination signal will disappear

when the p drops below the setting for
the indicator.

RETURN LINE FILTERS

RF SERIES

TECHNICAL DATA
STAUFF RF return line filters are designed as tank top filters. They are mounted directly on the tank top and
if 100 % of the system oil is filtered, they provide the optimum removal of contaminant from the system.
This provides the pump with clean oil thus reducing contaminant generated wear. The filter bowl is designed
to return oil beneath the tank oil surface thus preventing the entrainment of air by the returning oil.

Visual contamination indicator

1. Visual contamination indicator

The gauge displays the degree of contamination of the element. The colored
segments allow quick visual checking.
green
0 -36 psi (0.0-2.5 bar)
Element has service life left
yellow
36-43 psi (2.5-3.0 bar)
Element is contaminated and
should be changed
red
> 43 psi (> 3.0 bar)
Bypass valve open, unfiltered oil
passing to tank
The contamination indicator can be mounted on the top or on the side of
the filter head (see drawing on page 96).
2. Electrical contamination switch

Electrical contamination switch

The switch is used where an electrical signal is needed to indicate

when the element needs changing. The switch can turn on a light,
or shut the machine down, or any other function controlled by an
electric signal. The switching pressure is 36 psi (2.5 bar) and this
allows the element to be changed before the bypass setting of 43 psi
(3.0 bar) is reached.

3. Leakage oil connection

Leakage oil connection

Seal or case drain lines can be connected to the filter through

either of the contamination indicator ports providing that the
leakage oil can accept a pressure of 43 psi (3.0 bar.) It ensures
that no un-filtered oil returns to the reservoir.

4. Filter bowl with threaded connection

Threaded outlet

3/00

Under some circumstances such as a tall reservoir or one with

oil levels which vary greatly during operation, it is necessary to
extend the filter bowl so that the returning oil returns beneath the
surface and no air enters during the process. The optional bowl
with a female thread allows an extension to be fitted quite simply.

Multi Pass Testing (Beta Ratio)

The Beta Ratio (x) is considered one of the most important criteria in assessing the capability of a filter to remove
contaminant particles. This value is determined by means of the multi-pass test, according to ISO/DIN 4572.

Definition :

The Beta Ratio is the ratio of the number of particles, greater than a given size, upstream of the
filter to the number of particles, greater than the same size, downstream of the filter in the same size
fluid sample.
x = Number of particles > xm upstream
(x = particle size)
Number of particles > xm downstream

The Beta Ratio can be used to calculate the Filter Efficiency Rating by the following formula.
Ex = x - 1 x 100
x

Ratio vs Efficiency

Ex = % efficiency

Example for a given particle size of 10 m

CHOICE OF FILTERS
Choice of a suitable micron rating
Generally, the type of components incorporated in
the hydraulic system will determine the micron
rating required. It has been clearly demonstrated
that system components will operate reliably for
years if a specific minimum oil cleanliness
grade is maintained. Frequently the choice will be
determined by the most sensitive component
in the system.

Choice of the optimum filter

In selecting the filter, the following information
must be considered:
maximum flow volume (Qmax) through the filter
including surge flows
kinematic viscosity () of the fluid in SSU
at cold start temperature and operating
temperature
micron rating (m): see table

a) Operating filter

filter material
The aim is to choose a filter whose total
differential pressure (p) is no greater than
pmax = 14.5 psi (1.0 bar) for pressure filters or
pmax = 7.5 psi (0.5 bar) for return line filters, in a
clean state at the normal operating temperature.
These values have been proven in practice to give
the optimum service life for the element.
The nominal flow volume of the filter is the
obvious reference value for pre-selection and this
should be larger than the flow to be filtered.

Calculations based on the filter data will verify

whether the pre-selected filter meets the
requirements, at operating temperatures:
pmax < 14.5 psi (1.0 bar) (for pressure filter)
pmax < 7 psi (0.5 bar) (for return line filter)
The total differential pressure is the sum of the
differential pressure values of the empty housing
and the filter element. They are calculated from
the flow characteristics tables.
ptotal = phous + pelem

b) Protective filter
Occasionally, protective filters are fitted
downstream of major components, eg., the pump,
to collect the debris in case of a catastrophic
failure. This avoids total stripping and flushing of
the system. For economic reasons, protective filters
are normally one grade coarser than the operating
filters since they do not significantly contribute to
the cleaning of the system and this extends filter
service intervals.

The flow characteristic tables are based on a

kinematic viscosity of 30 centistokes (141 SSU).
For different viscosities, a correction factor (K)
based on the following formula must be applied
to the figure calculated at 30 centistokes (141 SSU).

K=

141

141

The operating differential pressure is then

calculated by the following formula:
poperating = pnom + K x pelem
The filter size is suitable if the poperating < pmax.
If the calculated poperating is greater than pmax,
select the next larger filter size and re-calculate
until a satisfactory solution is found.
The following two examples explain the procedure.

116

3/00

FILTRATION

The following chart is a general guide but the final

result should be checked by oil analysis. Apart from
the specific flow rate (gpm/in2 of filter area), other
factors such as operating environment and
condition of seals and breathers can have an effect
on the cleanliness grade which can actually be
achieved.

Example 2: Selection of a return line filter

System Information. A return line filter with a paper element is required to clean the oil.
No contamination indicator is required.
N. B.
If the system incorporates either accumulators or cylinders, the return flow can
dramatically exceed pump flow and the maximum surge flow should be the flow
used to calculate the pressure drop through the filter.
Data given:

operating = 150 SSU (32 cSt)
Micron rating 20 m (see table page 14)
First Step
Pre-selection:

In a clean state, this filter fulfills the requirements and is suitable for the application. No further
calculation is necessary.

Example 1: Selection of a pressure filter

System Information. A pressure filter with an inorganic glass fiber element is required immediately after
the pump. The system has standard components and is operating at pressures up to 3000 PSI (200 bar).
The filter shall be fitted with a bypass valve and a visual contamination indicator.
Data given:
Qmax = 45 gpm (170 lpm)
operating = 213 SSU (46 cSt)
Micron rating 10 m (see table on page 8&9)
First Step
Pre-selection:
Size SF 070, Qnominal = 70 gpm > Qmax
Pressure drop values at viscosity of 141 SSU (30 cSt) from the flow characteristics:
phous
= 3.6 psi (0.25 bar)
(SF 070 , see page 7)

Determination of the actual pressure drop:
pactual = phous + K pelem = 0.25 bar + 1.39 x 0.80 bar = 1.36 bar > pmax = 1.0 bar
3.62 psi + 1.39 x 11.6 psi = 19.7 psi > pmax = 14.5 psi
Since the actual pressure drop is larger than the allowed pressure drop, a larger filter has to be chosen.
Second Step
Selection of the next larger filter size; SF 090, Qnominal = 90 gpm > Qmax
phous
= 2.1 psi (0.15 bar)
(SF 090 , see page 7)
pelem

(SE 090 G 10 B, see page 9)
Actual pressure drop pact = phous + K pelem = 0.15 bar + 1.39 x 0.6 bar = 0.99 bar pmax = 1.0 bar
