Fruit salad
When did fruit salad originate? The answer depends upon how define the dish. Fruit salads (ie
combinations of various fresh, dried, candied [with sugar], stewed and/or fruits with vegetables)
since ancient times. The ingredients and recipes depended upon what was available (country,
seasons) and socio-cultural attitudes toward the ingredients (was raw fruit considered healthy or
not?).
Fruit salad, as we know it today [a variety of fresh, often tropical, fruits], surfaces in the mid-19th
century. Ambrosia is popular variation featuring coconut. Culinary evidence confirms sometimes
fruit salad was mixed with sugar and alcohol, thus the term "fruit cocktail." Non-alcoholic
versions of this recipe were concocted during Prohibition. Also popular in the 1920s were jellied
fruit salads. Think: Jell-O molds. During World War II fruit salads were promoted to ensure proper
amount of vitamin C were included in the American diet. Both canned and fresh fruits were
recommended. Fruit salads in northern Europe (Germany, for example) evolved differently. These
recipes used mayonnaise.
Rasha & Allen: Simulan na natin.
Ann: Narito na ang mga sangkap. [Sabihin na yung mga sangkap.]
TRIVIAS: Habang sinasabi yung mga sangkap, nagbibigay ng trivia tungkol ditto.
Wendell: FRUIT COCKTAIL. (Paikliin at tagalugin na lang) Fruit cocktail is often sold canned and is a
staple of cafeterias, but can also be made fresh. The use of the word "cocktail" in the name does not mean that it
contains alcohol, but refers to the secondary definition "An appetizer made by combining pieces of food, such as
fruit or seafood".

Klyde: CONDENSED MILK. (Tagalugin) Condensed milk is milk reduced by evaporation, with
sugar added. 1 can (14oz) = 1 quart whole milk plus 7oz of sugar.
It takes about 2.3 pounds of whole milk to make 1 pound of condensed milk.

Rema: BUKO. (Tagalugin.) Falling coconuts kill 150 people every year - 10 times the number of
people killed by sharks. Coconut oil was the world's leading vegetable oil until soybean oil took
over in the 1960s. There are more than 20 billion coconuts produced each year.

Ann: KESO. (Tagalugin) What appears to be the remains of cheese have been found in Egyptian
tombs over 4,000 years old. Turophilia is a love of or obsession with cheese.
