PREFACE

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the integration by enterprises on a voluntary

basis of the social and ecological concerns in their business transactions and their
relations with the involved parties. CSR is a dimension that should be part of the strategic
orientation at the basis of enterprise and should therefore interact with all spheres of
company management with the financial aspects with production with marketing with
human resource and more generally with corporate strategies and policies. Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR)is now moving towards Responsible Competitiveness, a
precept that implies that there is a role for business in influencing policy for business
success. The global CSR movement has passed through varied phases in time and in
concept with regard to the implementation of CSR. Initially grounded in corporate
philanthropy, it moved on to solidarity movements or environmental activism with citizen
sector movements taking on business. At the same time governments and courts have laid
down more stringent parameters of corporate behavior, compelling business towards
legal compliance, damage control for civil society and consumer reactions, and then on to
efficiency gains and differentiation for competitive advantage.
Over the last ten years there has been a shift from antagonistic activism to positive
engagement between companies and their stakeholders. In Europe business organizations
and their stakeholders are taking collaborative actions for debating and creating CSR
policies and strategies to achieve a competitive advantage at a national stage and to move
towards the next wave of responsible competitiveness which is innovation, sustainability
and future focus. In the Asia Pacific most of the countries are riding the so-called second
wave of CSR, which is efficiency-centre and market focused. They have reached
conceptual clarity and are looking at the impediments to CSR implementation. In India,
however, we have just started our journey and are struggling with the first wave i.e. of
philanthropy and legal compliance which is society and government focused. CSR is the
integration by enterprises on a voluntary basis of the social and ecological concerns in
their business transactions and their relations with the involved parties.
CSR is a dimension that should be part of the strategic orientation at the basis of
enterprise and should therefore interact with all spheres of company management with
the financial aspects with production with marketing with human resource and more
generally with corporate strategies and policies.

There are newer demands for a movement from using CSR as a brand building exercise
to socially oriented actions which are influenced by
 The shrinking role of government,
 Demands for greater disclosure,
 Increased customer interest,
 Growing investor pressures,
 Competitive labour market and
 Supplier’s relations
Corporate brand should reflect the underlying values of business and companies should
develop brand equity programme around these values. When we link CSR with corporate
governance we need to emphasize that the company will need to manage better
enforcement of various contracts and they can do so by relating operating aspects of
business to brand building exercises.
Expected outcomes of social responsibility are
 Improved financial performance,
 Increases customer loyalty,
 Higher ability to attract and retain employees,
 Reduced regulatory oversight and workforce diversity,
 Product safety and decreased liability,
 Employee volunteer programmes and
 Greater use of renewable resources
The purpose of researcher to carry out the study on employees with respect to Corporate
Social Responsibility which helps to understand knowledge, attitude and practices of
employees towards it and the awareness and suggestion for the betterment of CSR
activities carried out by the organization.
