INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background
In 1974 the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) of the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) acknowledged the value and expressed the desire of having
recorders on ships similar to the black box flight recorders for aircraft.
In 1996, VDR requirements, which had been debated for a long time, began to form
in the navigation and electronics subgroup (NAV) of the IMO
The IMO passed resolution A.861 (20) in Nov. 1997 and the IEC standard 61996 was
completed
The IEC 61996-2 Shipborne Voyage Data Recorder Performance Requirements
describes data acquisition and storage functions
1.2
System Architecture
Architecture for complying with this standard has emerged that has two major
components:
In the first, the ships interfaces, data acquisition, and soft recording functions are
encompassed in the Data Management system consisting of the Main Electronic Unit
(MEU) which includes the Radar Acquisition unit (Epiphan), Audio Microphones and
Remote Alarm.
These units are intended for installation in a protected environment
The second component is the Fixed Capsule or the Float Free Capsule.
The Fixed Capsule encompasses the final storage medium in a protected environment
from any extreme events. The Fixed Capsule is intended for external installation in a
clear area on top of the superstructure.
The Float Free Capsule encompasses the final storage medium in an EPIRB type unit.
This Capsule is intended for external installation in a clear area on the superstructure
which will enable the Capsule to be released clear of the vessel.
In the event of an incident the Capsule may be recovered and the data downloaded
and used during accident investigation.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The AMI Marine VR2272B conforms to all the current IMO / IEC / SOLAS standards.
The system is designed such that it can be installed on new ships and retrofits alike.
The VR2272B captures the ships radar, audio and proprietary signal data and stores it
in an approved final recording media the capsule.
Data capture is fully automated and requires no further action from the ships crew,
except for the data save override which prevents data loss, and the download
operation when required.
A minimum of 12 hours historic playback data can be recovered by downloading the
information from the Capsule onto a portable laptop computer.
Up to a further 2 days of ships data information can also be accessed from the system
memory.
The system records data without interruption during the download process.

Step 1.
From the AMI CD locate and run the following exe installation program, accepting all
the defaults.
M3Setup.exe
This will create the following sub directories in the install path:
C:\Program Files\ESL\M3 with a sub directory \Data, with sub dirs, \NMEA, \Sound
and \Video. These sub directories are initially empty and will hold the temporary data
files.
From the AMI CD locate the NO VIDEO.bmp and NO VIDEO.zip files and replace the
installed versions in C:\Program Files\ESL\M3\
VGA2USBSetup.exe
This will initially give you an option, select just your self continue the installation. The
setup will create the following folder:
C:\Program Files\ Epiphan Systems VGA2USB\
Now close down the M3 program and start up again to make sure everything starts up
and capturing OK
3.2.1 M3 Programme
The M3 software is based on the Full Monty software suite. It combines all the
features into a single program, eliminating the need for NMEApro with DDE interprogram communication and having to launch the external DOS compression
program, PKZIP. In addition, all slow operations, like save incident, writing to the
capsule and partition clearing, have been written as separate program threads so they
do not hold up any of the main operations. The result of all this is improved reliability
and efficiency. M3 receives the combined NMEA data on COM1 and AIS data or data
from an additional AMI external data combiner on COM2.

The default setting, PCM 22.050 KHz 8 bit stereo, is the closest to the previous sound
format used in Full Monty.
The sound recording component allows the use of other formats with different
frequency responses which cause larger and smaller data files. The formats are
selected using the pull down list. At present this has been set to the optimum and
should not be changed.

The video tab of the config dialogue now has an edit box for the parameter string and
3 buttons as follows:
"Defaults" - Sets the string to "v2u.exe -a phase=0:pll=0:hs=0:vs=0:offset=0:gain=127"
"Test Now" - Sends the current string to the Epiphan card.
"Apply"
- marks the current string for saving in the M3 config file.
(Note the Apply button is only active if the parameter string has changed)
On starting M3 the string from the config file is used to configure the Epiphan card.
Initially this will be the default settings as shown above. Make any changes carefully
to ONLY the numbers in this parameter string. These could be those noted down from
use of the v2ugui.exe program or you can change a setting and click the Test Now

button to watch the effect within M3. To do this select the video page and maximise
M3 by double clicking on the M3 window's blue top bar before launching the config
dialog. You will have to wait 15 - 30 seconds after clicking Test Now before the effect
of each change is visible.
When you are happy with the settings, click "Apply" and "OK" the config dialogue.
This will write the current parameter string to the config file. The Apply button marks
the current string for inclusion in the config file, so even if you "Cancel" the config
dialogue the parameter string will still be written to the config file the next time the
M3 program quits.
Note: The command line parameter string MUST start "v2u.exe -a ". Do not change
anything except the numbers when modifying it. There is a floating hint associated
with the edit box which is an aide-memoir to the permitted ranges of the parameters.
Hover the mouse pointer on the edit box to make it appear.

L3 HVR
You can control where the data is recovered to. The Default is .\HVR\ i.e. the HVR
directory in the install directory.
If you connect a USB HDD you can now unload the whole HVR and easily remove, but
be warned this will take 45 to 60 minutes per 500MB.
To avoid unloading the entire HVR to look at the most recent data there is now an
option to step back a number of Mbytes from the current write pointer position and
start recovery from there with average file sizes 150Mb is about 1 Hr of data.
This can be calculated by adding 4 x radar captures files (RFG), 1 x audio (SND) and 1
x data (VDR) which will give you the number of MB per minute.
If you use this step back option enter a figure greater than e.g. 1800 and then in the
Mbytes to recover box type in 75 which should download approximately 30 minutes
worth of data, the start button sets the recovery process.
Note - That using the default settings on starting the HVR Recovery program, (apart
from changing the recovery destination path), pressing start and answering NO to Do
you want to reset the HVR first? is how you recover the entire contents of the HVR.

start time of the data, the actual order in the directory of the 1 min audio and data
files with respect to the 4 RFG files, may be different.

The KW932 Status input card is used to interface any Status or Alarms signal which
can be seen or heard on the bridge. Status data is entered into the system by up to
32 KW932 cards, each with 32 input channels. The serial data output for each channel
is a digital 1 or 0. Information in the shipdata.txt file enables the playback software to
convert these values into a plain English display. Each card has a unique block title
enclosed in square brackets, and these take the form of [KW932A] through [KW932Z]
for the first 26 and [KW9321] through [KW9326] for 27 to 32.
[KW932A]
Block Title, one required per card. The cards are assigned an incremental letter, thus
the next header will be [KW932B] then [KW932C] and so on up to [KW9326].
Code=A
Each card must be set to a unique ID code using the DIP switches on the card itself.
The range of these codes is A to Z and 1 to 6.
Name=Code
To help identify each card is achieved by adding a Name field into the card data block.
Any text can be used which help identify the specific card inputs.
Following the Block Title, ID and Name code there are eight groups of four digital
inputs with the status descriptions. The content of each input is the text name
identifying the source of the signal e.g.
Bit21="FIRE ALARM"
The status text fields determine what the digital 1 or 0 will represent on the Replay
Program e.g.
Status20="NORMAL"
Status21="ALARM"
Note that the state of any group of 4 inputs can be either one of a pair e.g.
OPEN / CLOSED
NORMAL / FAIL
GOOD / BAD
NORMAL / ALARM

The KW935 analogue input card is used to interface any voltage and current sensors.
Analogue data is entered into the system by up to 16 KW932 cards, each with 4 input
channels. The serial data output for each channel is always in the range -100% to
+100%. Information in the shipdata.txt file enables the playback software to convert
these values to real world units, and generate alarm signals on over range values.
Section header and Unit ID code.
Then for each analogue input we have:The Input Name
The Real (or Plant) value of the input
The voltage (or current) at the KW935 producing the plant output
Each analogue input has its own section in the ShipData.txt file. This must be
completed correctly for the data to be properly displayed.
[KW935A]
Section header, one required per card. The cards are assigned an incremental letter,
thus the next header will be [KW935B] then KW935C and so on up to KW935H.
Code=00
This is the ID code set on the card; each card must have a unique ID. Make sure this
code is zero, 0A not letter O A. The range of these codes is 00 to 0F
Following the header and code there are four sections, one for each of the card
inputs. The contents of each section consist of a variable and a number, the variable
is the same in each case the number is the channel number e.g.
Name Field
This is the Parameter Name that will be shown in the first column of the display.
Units Field
This is displayed after the calculated plant value in the second column. Typical values
are RPM, Deg, %, Knts
Pos Field / Neg Field
These are used where positive and negative plant values have distinct meaning.
Typical values
PosX = Stb , Ahead, Right
NegX = Port, Astern, Left
Where negative values are not expected, or where a parameter can actually go
negative, these fields are left empty.
48
Page 48 of 104
VR2272B Installation Manual Iss11
AMI VR2272B
MaxRaw / MinRaw
This is the maximum and minimum values output by the card WHEN CONNECTED TO
THE SENSOR.
The KW935 has an output range of -100% to +100%. However when connected to
the sensor this full range may not be utilized. The on card adjustment can be used to
make sure the full range of the A to D is utilized without overflow. For example from 0
shaft RPM to maximum shaft RPM may be presented as a voltage. 0v input should
give zero % output, and then the on card potentiometer is used to make the
maximum shaft rpm out produce a card out put near to 100%, without actually
reaching 100% e.g. 99%
In example 1 the max value is set to 100 and the min value set to 0.
In example 2 the max value is set to 95 and the min value to 5. These values will
never be outside the -100% to +100% range.
MaxVA / MinVA
These are the maximum and minimum voltage or current measured at the 935 input
for a full excursion of plant parameter.
In example 1 its a perfect 0 to 10 V, in example 2 its 0.3 to 9.1 V.
Example 2 is rudder angle and assumed to be linear thus rudder is amidships with an
input of (9.1 0.3) /2 = 4.4V
MaxPlant / MinPlant
This is the maximum and minimum real world values represented by the MaxVA and
MinVA inputs.
In example 1 the RPM goes from 0 to 300. In example 2 we go from 35 degrees port
rudder to 35 deg starboard rudder.
AlarmH / AlarmHH
These are two alarm settings. They are used to generate Alarm outputs ON
PLAYBACK. THE DO NOT INDICATE AN ALARM WAS SOUNDED ON THE VESSEL.
They have different meaning depending on the range of the plant parameter.
If the plant parameter is always positive, for example wind speed then in this case
AlarmH is set to a warning level, and AlarmHH is set to a critical level.
If the plant parameter is able to swing between positive and negative, for example
rudder angle then in this case AlarmH is for the positive value, and AlarmHH is for
the negative value.

Important Notes
1. Inputs to the KW935 card are assumed to be linear over their range.
2. Where plant values have a fore / aft, ahead / astern starboard / port value the
convention is that Aft, Astern, and Port are negative e.g.
Rudder angle -35 to + 35 = 35 to port 35 to starboard
Reversible Shaft RPM -50 to + 300 = 50 astern to 300 ahead
Example 1
Name3="PORT SHAFT RPM"
Units3=RPM
Pos3=
Neg3=
MaxRaw3=100
MinRaw3=0
MaxVA3=10
MinVA3=0
MaxPlant3=300
MinPlant3=0
AlarmH3=280
AlarmHH3=290
This is a shaft RPM sensor where the shaft actual minimum speed is 0 and the
maximum RPM is 300. This is represented at the input of the KW935 as a voltage
between 0 and 10V.
Example 2
Name4=RUDDER ANGLE
Units4=Deg
Pos4=Stb
Neg4=Port
MaxRaw4=95
MinRaw4=5
MaxVA4=9.1
MinVA4=0.3
MaxPlant4=35
MinPlant4=-35
AlarmH4=30
AlarmHH4=-30
This is a rudder angle indicator. The maximum starboard rudder angle is 35; the
maximum port rudder angle is also 35 (this is entered as a negative value.)
This is supposed to be a 0 to 10V signal, but when measured the values were 0.3 V
for -35 deg and 9.1 V for +35 deg. The corresponding range of KW935 output was 5
to 95.
