1. Explain the input and output characteristics of a transducer. [16]


2. Derive the expressions for a frequency response of second order systems subjected
to a sinusoidal input and find the expressions for [16]
(a) Resonant frequency
(b) Resonant peak
(c) Band width
3. (a) What do you mean by a true zero of a potentiometer. [6]
(b) A Basic slide wire potentiometer has a working battery voltage of 3.0 V with
negligible internal resistance. The resistance of slidwire is 400 Ω and its length
is 200 cm. A 200 cm scale is placed along the slide wire. The slide wire
has 1 mm scale divisions and it is possible to read upto 1/5 a division. The
Instrument is standardized with 1.018v. Standard cell with the sliding contact
at the 101.8 cm mark on scale. Calculate
i. working current
ii. The Resistance of series rheostat,
iii. The measurement rnage and
iv. the Resolution of Instrument. [10]
4. (a) Explain the mutual Inductance method for testing of a potential transformer.

(b) Two current transformers of the same nominal ratio 500/5A are tested by
Silsbee method. With current in the secondary of the standard transfer-
mer adjusted at its rated value. The current in the middle conducter ∆I =
0.05e−J/26.90 expressed with repected to current in the secondary of standard
transformer as the reference. It is known that the standard transformer has
a ratio currection factor of 1.005 and phase error +8. Find RCF and phase
angle error of transformer under test.

5. Explain how a capacitive transducer can be used as a microphone and show what
are the additional considerations applied while designing the same. [16]

2. (a) How can you justify the system is said to be zero-order first-order, second
order type, give an example each. [8]
(b) A balloon is equipped with temperature and altitude measuring instruments
and has radio equipment which can transmit the o/p reading of these instru-
ments back to ground. The balloon is initially anchored to the ground with the
instrument output readings in steady state. The altitude measuring instru-
ment is approximately zero order and the temperature tranducer first order
with a time constant of 20 sec. The temperature on the ground T0 is 100 C
and the temperature Tx at an altitude of X meters is given by the relation
Tx = T0 − 0.01 x what temperature does the balloon report at an altitude of
5000 meters? Assume at 5000 m t = 1000 sec. [8]
