Senator Reed Visits MHRI

Senator Jack Reed visited the Family Care Center at Memorial
Hospital on October 15. In early October, Senator Reed announced
his plan to team up with Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri to introduce
the Building a Health Care Workforce for the Future Act. This legislation would help address the looming health care workforce shortage
by making it easier for students to pursue careers in health care, with
an emphasis on primary care, and encouraging providers to work in
medically under-served communities and practice areas of highest
need.

Five Year HRSA Grant

The Department of Family Medicine received a five year
HRSA grant Transforming Family Centered Primary
Care for Children and Adolescents in Underserved Areas. This award is for five years and totals $1,250,000
($250,000 each year). The Principal Investigator is Melissa Nothnagle,
MD, MSc, the Residency Director for the Family Medicine Residency.
The purpose of the grant is to enhance the training of 1) medical students, family medicine (FM) residents, and family medicine faculty at
MHRI, and 2) community faculty in the underserved communities of
Pawtucket and Central Falls. Our intent is to cultivate a workforce of primary care providers who are: well prepared to deliver patient and familycentered care for children and adolescents; will elect to practice in underserved communities; and will become our future leaders in transforming
primary care delivery systems. Congratulations!
