What You Don’t Know About Your Drinking Water May Be Dangerous
A study released by Ralph Nader’s Center for Study of Responsive Law in Washingt
on, DC, shows that much of the nation’s drinking water is unsafe: Tests conducte
d in 38 states found over 2,000 toxic chemicals in the drinking water. About 10%
of these chemicals are associated with causing cancer, cell growths, neurologic
al damage, and birth defects. Thousands of chemicals found in our water supplies
have never even been tested for safety.
A joint study by the EPA and the National Academy of Sciences has attributed 200
–1,000 US deaths each year to the inhalation of chloroform from water while bath
ing.
So what’s in the water Americans are drinking? Here is a partial list of the unw
elcome additions that have been found in drinking water.
• arsenic is a known carcinogen and poison
• asbestos is a known carcinogen
• cadmium causes arteriosclerosis, kidney damage, and cancer
• lead causes learning disabilities in children
• mercury causes nervous system and kidney damage
• nitrites are a possible carcinogen that also interferes with body’s oxygen met
abolism
• viruses and bacteria
• toxic chemicals
• 1,1,1-trichloroethane causes liver damage and depression
• 1,1-dichlorethylene causes depressed central nervous system and cancer
• benzene causes chromosomal damage in humans, anemia, blood disorders, and leuk
emia
• chloroform causes cancer
• dioxin is an extremely toxic carcinogen
• ethylene dibromide causes male sterility and cancer
• polychlorinated biphyls [PCB] causes liver damage, skin disorders, and GI prob
lems and is highly suspected of causing cancer
A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood
stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of
at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.
To be sure, the concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are tiny, measured in qu
antities of parts per billion or trillion, far below the levels of a medical dos
e. Also, utilities insist their water is safe.
But the presence of so many prescription drugs — and over-the-counter medicines
like acetaminophen and ibuprofen — in so much of our drinking water is heighteni
ng worries among scientists of long-term consequences to human health.
In the course of a five-month inquiry, the AP discovered that drugs have been de
tected in the drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas — from Sout
hern California to Northern New Jersey, from Detroit to Louisville, KY.
Officials in Philadelphia said testing there discovered 56 pharmaceuticals or by
products in treated drinking water, including medicines for infection, pain, hig
h cholesterol, asthma, epilepsy, mental illness and heart problems. Sixty-three
pharmaceuticals or byproducts were found in the city s watersheds.
Anti-epileptic and anti-anxiety medications were detected in a portion of the tr
eated drinking water for 18.5 million people in Southern California.
Researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey analyzed a Passaic Valley Water Commis
sion drinking water treatment plant, which serves 850,000 people in Northern New
Jersey, and found a metabolized angina medicine and the mood-stabilizing carbam
azepine in drinking water.
_A sex hormone was detected in San Francisco s drinking water.
_The drinking water for Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas tested positive
for six pharmaceuticals.
Do I really need to continue? I think you get the message. Our drinking water is
not safe! A hot shower or bath can increase your exposure to toxic chemicals by
400 percent.

Consumers typically buy bottled water under the misconception that it is safer,
purer or healthier than tap water. Bottled water companies have spent billions t
