DICTATORSHIP OR DEMOCRACY? ARE WE REALLY A DEMOCRACY?

Imagine the next time you step into a voting booth your ballot only lists one candidate to choose
from. On the other hand, perhaps your ballot lists four candidates but they are all from the liberal
party!
As you, all know democracy is a government by you people, is for you people and of you people.
Democracy for us was a whiff of fresh air after we got independence.
Let us go the history or origin of democracy, the time when empowering people by giving them a
say in their political entities realized and that traces back to Athens to its re-emergence and rise
from the 17th century to the present day.
I am a very strong supporter of democracy and know how in todays era nobody can even think
of living under a Hitler or Mussolini. Even though a democracy is weak there is always a chance
to improve the government because it is in the hands of the people or the masses whereas though
the strongest dictator is ruling the nation one has no option of putting forward his views
pertaining to anything. If by any chance one expresses he will either be strangled or will be
poisoned. Do you really think you can live in such a condition when you cannot even speak for
own self?
Dictatorship is like putting a lid on a persons ideas and people have to do or think what their
ruler thinks for them. Moreover, any nation is too big and too diverse for a single man to rule or
one mindset and we definitely need independence to think, act and to practice religion what one
wishes to.
Now taking some examples, you already know from our Indian history we see that at the time of
Akbar who supported his people and their ideology the nation progressed. We cannot say it was a
very strong democracy because in a democracy you have the right to change the government you
do not like and there are no hereditary rights but still taking the masses view is the most
important and influential factor. Now comparing Akbar to Aurangzeb, ruler of the same dynasty
who ruled like a dictator people were unhappy, unsatisfied and very little or no progress made.
We also remember Chanakaya, Kautilya , Birbal as scholars who were allowed to speak and
express whatever they felt like and if you the audience realized no such scholars are known or
remembered today from the rule of Aurangzeb or any other dictator because the ideas of the
masses remain suppressed and only one religion was respected and preached.
Millions died when Hitler and Mussolini were ruling. Anybody who did not support their
policies were killed. Times are witness to the fact that though the dictators might have helped in
turning the fortunes of nations like Germany under the rule of Hitler, Indonesia under the
dictatorship of Suharto. A very recent example: the Chinese progress but the way dictatorship
crushed in the first two countries and much other giving way to open systems of governance,
which lead to further progress of the nations. Structure of progress we saw in these nations was

built on the foundation of the flesh and blood of the masses, to say that people were forced
beyond the levels of humanity to follow the ideologies of their dictator.
Democracy and dictatorship are both forms of government and the government if for the masses
and the state is for the masses and not the masses for the government or the state. Freedom of
speech and expression today gives us a very strong platform to stand and speak against a
government, which is not working in favor of the national interest or support the government that
can bring a revolution of progress, and the country will reach new heights. If only dictatorship
can bring progress in the nation then how AMERICA a democracy from the very beginning the
most powerful and the most developed nation in the world and the other countries look up on
their system of governance and how come India again being a democracy is predicted to be the
largest economy in the coming years.
To conclude I would like to state that any act done against the nature gives us very bad results at
the end. Taking the most basic example of a childbirth I would like to put forward the reality that
a child born by a normal delivery is healthier than a child born through surgery did. Simple
reason being force of the doctor on the child spoils the childs health and if a newborn infant can
react to unnecessary force then we all are very mature people of a nation to decide whether we
can live under a dictator or make a government who work for the benefit of all.
