Part I:

Choose A, B, C, D, or E for the correct answer!

The following text is for number 1-2.

There was once a poor woman who wished very much to
have a little child. She went to a fairy godmother that lived
near the green meadow in the valley. The woman received a
barleycorn seed from the fairy. She went home and planted it
in the planted pot. Several days later, the seed grew up into a
large beautiful flower. Surprisingly, the woman saw a little girl
inside the flower. The sweet girl was as long as a thumb. The
woman gave the name Thumbelina because she was so
small.

Five firefighters were busy at the scene. Lieut John Carey of

the Yonkers Arson Squad said the cause of the fire was under
investigation.

Most people visiting America from Europe arrive by ship in
New York. Some of the visitors and immigrants never go
beyond New York. They never see such places as Chicago,
Oklahoma, and San Francisco. So the city of New York has
people of many different races. It has a large number of
foreigners and one can hear foreign languages being spoken
on all sides.
The early settlers chose for their own island which they
could easily defend. New York has grown far beyond the
boundaries of this island (Manhattan), and cost of land of the
island is very expensive. For this reason, there are many very
tall buildings called skyscrapers.
New York, which has a population of 8 million, is not only the
largest but also the most important city in the United States. It is
the centre of business and financial activity. It is not, however,
the capital of the USA. The capital is Washington, in the district
of Columbia, and the seat of government is there. The United
States is one of the few countries in the world whose largest city
is not its capital.
