Not Forgotten
Not Forgotten is an organization that is compelled by the love of Christ to
provide for the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of impoverished,
abandoned, and oppressed people of the world so that they may improve their
quality of life, find salvation through Jesus Christ, and be empowered to affect
change in their communities. For more information, please see our website at

Street Children
Street children are a social phenomenon throughout central and South
America. Because of extreme poverty, lack of commitment in marriage, broken
ideas of family, and social acceptance, it is not uncommon to find a single mother
with eight children struggling to get by on a dollar a day. Inevitably, it becomes
impossible for the mother to provide for the entire family and somebody has to go
or the whole family will die. This usually ends up being the oldest son, typically
between the ages of eight and twelve. He is kicked out of the house and forced
to live and survive on the streets. Once on the streets there are really only two
ways for a street boy to survive: one, he can steal for food or two, he can
prostitute himself. The first option comes with the high risk of being brutally
beaten by police, and the second comes with incredible loss of dignity and
emotional damage. Often called piranhas and considered more worthless than a
dog, it is said “a street boy is abandoned by God and his own mother, there can
be no good in him.”
At Not Forgotten, we believe that street children are Godʼs own children
and that they hold a very special place in his heart. We seek to help these
children in their plight against the struggles and injustices that they face by
helping to provide a caring home, a quality education, and knowledge of the love
and grace of God.
Puerto Alegria
Puerto Alegria is a home for street children operated by Scripture Union of
Peru. It is located about an hour up the Itaya River from the major jungle city of
Iquitos. Puerto Alegria was created to provide a permanent place where street
children from Iquitos could live and go to school away from the distractions and
temptations of life in the city.
The Home
Puerto Alegria is currently home to 40 street children and orphans from
Iquitos and the surrounding areas of the jungle. The home is currently run by
Gene and Patty Idlett (both Peruvians) with the help of an educator, cook, and
gardener. Facilities include 2 dormitories for 20 boys each, a kitchen and dining
room, the directorʼs home, a gazebo, and a soccer field. Construction is currently
underway for 12 bungalows and a central meeting room to provide a place to
stay for work teams and local church retreats.
Trips
Puerto Alegria is the place where the idea for Not Forgotten, Inc. was
born. Not Forgotten now organizes several trips a year to Puerto Alegria, bringing
work teams from the states. The purpose of these work teams is primarily to
share the love of Christ with the children in Puerto Alegria and all others we
encounter along the way. We do this by helping with the ongoing construction,
providing activities and Bible lessons, and spending quality time playing and
talking with the children. The maximum number of people that we can take is
25, so sign up quickly before all spots are taken!

Not Forgotten
Team Covenant
(Please sign and return with your application)
I realize that the following principles are crucial to the effectiveness, quality, and safety of our mission
together.
As a member of the short-term mission team, I promise and covenant, by God’s abounding grace, to:
1. Remember that I am a representative of Not Forgotten and Jesus Christ, and as such I will seek to
represent the spiritual values, moral conduct and likeness to Christ that are embraced and embodied in
that assembly.
2. Remember that I am a guest working at the invitation of the personnel in the host country. I agree to
respect and support their leadership.
3. Remember that I have come not only to help, but also to learn. I may be exposed to procedures and
practices that I feel are ineffective or insufficient. I may also be confronted by attitudes that I feel are
narrow or close-minded. As this occurs I will resist the temptation to “correct” my hosts and inform them
about “how things are done back in the United States.” I will rather be open to the opportunity of
learning other culture’s methods and ideas.
4. Respect my host’s culture and distinctive practices of Christianity. I recognize that the Christian faith has
many different faces throughout the world, and that one of the purposes of my trip is to witness and
experience faith lived out in a different culture.
5. Develop and consistently maintain a servant’s attitude toward all nationals and my teammates.
6. Respect our team leader(s) and their decisions.
7. Refrain from gossip and keep my promise of giving only good reports. If there are policies and decisions
made by the leaders with which I disagree or do not understand, I will go to the team leaders in private
and make my concerns known to them rather than to other team members. In so doing I will avoid the
possibility of sowing seeds of dissension and division.
8. Be patient, forbearing, and forgiving toward the failings of the other members on the team.
9. Refrain from complaining. I realize that travel can present numerous unexpected and undesirable
circumstances, but the rewards of conquering such circumstances are desirable. I will resolve to be
flexible, supportive, and adaptive on such occasions rather than grumbling when circumstances are
difficult.
10. Respect the work that is going on in the host country with its pastors and leaders. I realize that our team
will be there for just a short time, but the local church is there long term. I will respect their knowledge,
insights, and instructions.
11. Refrain from negative comments or hostile discussions concerning the host country’s politics and
culture.
12. Remember not to be exclusive in my relationships with the team. If my sweetheart or spouse is on the
team we will make every effort to interact regularly with all team members of the team.
13. Refrain from activity or undue interest that could be construed as a romantic interest toward a national. I
realize that certain actions that seem innocent in my own culture may be inappropriate in another culture.
14. Refrain from any consumption of alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, and liquors. While this is
not an attempt to bind the conscience, I understand that such indulgence may cause another to stumble. I
realize and accept that failure to adhere to this mandate will result in my exclusion from further short-
term trips.
15. Refrain from use of any tobacco or tobacco related products.
16. Seek to live and exemplary life of holiness and obedience to God’s commands.

In Peru you will be noticeable. Therefore people´s eyes will be on you and how
you conduct yourself. It is vital therefore that you reflect characteristics and
actions that would glorify God.
Loyalty
is your main support network; therefore all members should respect one another
and be completely supportive and loyal, wanting the best for, and thinking the
best of each other.
Smoking
If you are a smoker we ask that you refrain during your brief stay in Peru, where it
could have a damaging effect on the reputation of Scripture Union.
Alcohol
Drugs
Respecting Leadership
While in Peru, you are under the responsibility of your team leaders for issues
that concern internal group discipline and the overall authority of your Scripture
Union hosts for guidance. Therefore you must agree to respect their leadership
and share any grievances you may have.
Scripture Union Liabilities
SUPeru excludes liability for personal injury or death suffered by a work team
member as a result of:
a) events outside its control or the control of the officially appointed leadership;
b) actions by the work team member which are at variance with the Guidelines;
c) actions taken by work team members that are deemed illegal according to
Peruvian law;
If the Guidelines are not complied with, disciplinary action may well be take
and the offending participant will be asked to leave the work team and return
home.
There are four procedures inviolved in this process, however I would like to
highlight that it is only in extreme cases where the situation would come to this.
When a warning is given the work team member is informed that her/his
performance remain below the level satisfactory to the movement, within a stated
period, she/he will be subject to further disciplinary action.
May I bring my CD player to listen to music? Yes, but bear in mind that any item of
this sort is a temptation to the people you will meet.
What construction work will we do? In Iquitos brick laying and masonry will continue
on the older boys home. Work in Puerto Alegría, now full steam ahead, will include
carpentry and painting detail on another dormitory for the boys.
Where will we stay? The first night will be on mattresses on the floor of the S.U. center
in Lima or in the Lima airport. Then, in the boyʼs dormitory in Puerto Alegría, which
includes running COLD water, bunk beds and screened rooms. Two people per room.
How do we travel from Lima? A 90 minute flight from Lima to Iquitos (Amazon) in a
very nice jet, followed by a 90 minute boat trip to Puerto Alegría.
What kind of clothing should we wear on the work site? Clothing that is comfortable
to work in, but girls should avoid wearing mid drift shirts.
Do we need a dress or skirt for Sunday? No. This is not necessary, but the clothing
should be clean. Wearing mid drifts and torn jeans would be offensive and confusing to
the Peruvians you will be worshipping with.
What will we do aside from construction work? Share a well deserved plunge in the
cool Itaya with the boys from our center and the piranhas from their river. Your day off
will include an eye opening walk through the Belén market and lunch at the center in
Iquitos, followed by a leisurely afternoon at Lake Quistococha and shopping at the
handicraft market. Upon returning to Lima, you will eat with the boys in the S.U. center,
see a choreography presentation, and plenty of shopping at the local handicraft market!
What is the temperature like in Iquitos? Can be extremely hot and humid! Be
prepared!
What address should we put on the customs form? Avda. Bolivia 180, Lima
Do we need to bring tools for our work? No, unless indicated on the Wish List which
you will receive. However, you should bring work boots or tennis shoes, gloves and a
personal water bottle.
How can we call home? You can buy a telephone card for about $6 which can be used
when you are in Iquitos.
GIFT AND GIVING POLICY
UNIÓN BÍBLICA DEL PERÚ
We have been singularly blessed these last few years with a growing
number of very generous friends coming to us on Work Teams. In order to avoid
a generous act of giving to end up causing a problem (This has only happened a
couple of times in the past), we have written out the following Guidelines.
ABOUT GIFTS:
1. We shall send out to all Teams a wish List, items that would be of great value
to us here in Peru. From that list, items may be selected and brought.
3. If you have been before and/or have something very specific in mind, we can
e-mail back and forth about bringing it.
ABOUT GIVING:
The real danger and ultimately very negative results of ʻspoilingʼ are great,
particularly so in the case of our dear street boys. So we have to work together
on this one. Unfortunately you will basically have to forego the pleasure of
ʻseeing them open the packageʼ in exchange for the greater good of doing it to
their advantage. Therefore:
1. All gifts (clothing, sheets, shoes, etc.) will be given to the person in Peru
responsible for your Work Team or to the person he/she designates.
2. Marty Clark and Bertha Lavado have the overall task of receiving, sorting
and distributing items according to the requests they receive from our staff
in charge of the various ministries. This has to do with teams going to Kimo,
Kawai, Ica, and Kusi. Those teams going to Iquitos will take all donations
there and give them to Kely Villacis who is in charge of sorting and
distributing there. In the case that a team brings a large item from the list,
previous consultation will advise you whether to take it to Iquitos or leave it
in Lima, but clothing, toys, games, etc., go with you to Iquitos/Puerto
Alegría.
3. Clothes, etc. used by Work Team members and left behind are washed,
then processed as in #2.
4. Sometimes it is appropriate for the gifts to be given to the boys or workmen
by Work Team members, having made satisfactory arrangements
previously with the Scripture Union person in charge of your team.
Whenever this is advisable, obviously it is the ideal situation.
5. We try to discourage boys and workers from asking for things (but they still
do), and we do well until someone slips up and gives in! So, please be
strict on yourself.
6. When gifts are given we always tell them who it is from (not necessarily the
specific name of the giver) and encourage them to thank God, from whom
all good things come.
Please feel free to write for clarification on any of this. We want to get the
ultimate mileage out of your generosity.
Pray:
“Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
Proverbs 16:3
One of the most important parts in raising support is the follow up:
• Plan on sending your supporters a follow up letter to share with them
about the trip. As a supporter, this simple letter can mean so much…to
hear about all the Lord did and to know that they were a vital part in the
ministry overseas.
As you may have already heard, we are going back to Peru! Last year during
Spring Break our team of 8 Samford students discovered the joy of serving God in the
jungles of Peru. This year God has blessed us tremendously and we are heading back to
the same place March 19-28 with 23 students! While we are there we will be
constructing homes for street boys, leading Vacation Bible Schools, and sharing the love
of Christ. We are all very excited to see how God is going to work. We have been busy
planning for our trip, gathering supplies, organizing Vacation Bible School, and raising
support both individually and through a bake sale. There is still much preparation needed
before we go and we need all of the help we can get. After having been to Peru several
times and having experienced delayed planes, lost luggage, and physical illness, it has
become evident that Satan will do anything to discourage and impair those who are doing
God’s work. For that reason I beseech you to be a part of our prayer army. Spiritual
warfare is very real and we need as many warriors as we can have praying for our team.
Prayer needs include:
• God would unite our team in spirit and in purpose
• God would make us humble servants
• God’s love would be revealed through us
• God would prepare us spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically
• God would move in the hearts of those that we meet
• God would keep our team healthy and safe
• That we would trust in God to provide our every need
We are also still in need of financial support. This trip will cost our team a total
of over $27,000, and despite our efforts in fundraising we are still in need of
approximately $4,000. This includes all of our airfare, lodging, transportation, food, and
ministry materials. I do not wish to make anybody feel like they must support us
financially. In actuality, we desire your prayers much more than your money, because
God promises us that he will provide. But if you feel led, we would greatly appreciate
any financial support you could provide. We must raise all of our funds by March 11. If
you decide to support us through prayer or financially, please fill out the form below and
return it in the self-addressed envelope. Thank you so much for considering this
investment in the lives of others. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me
at 256-509-8575 or via email at jtfuqua@samford.edu. I look forward to see what God
has in store, and to see the impact we can have when we are obedient to him.
In Christ,
Tyler Fuqua
