TheSchillingprofileisdesignedtoimprovetheeffectiveliftgeneratedbytherudderandhenceimprove
themaneuverabilityofthecraft,especiallyatslowspeeds.Therudderiseffectiveinbothforwardand
reverse.

Likeallrudders,themaineffectofaSchillingrudderistodeflecttheflowofwatergeneratedbythe
propeller.Schillingruddersaremostcommonlyusedonshipsthataredifficulttomaneuver,suchaslarge
ships(example:containershipsandoiltankers),slowmovingshipsandboats,longerandnarrowerships,
orboatswithslowmovingpropellers.
Additionally,atwinrudderconfigurationand/orabowthrustercansignificantlycontributetothe
maneuverabilityofeventhelargestships.Whentheruddersareatanglesof90degreesormoretothe
directionofthepropellergeneratedthrust,theycandirectthethrustforwardandprovideasignificant
brakingeffectontheship.
