SeENS Welcome message

Dear colleagues and friends,
The Southeast Europe Neurosurgical Society (www.seens.eu) as an affiliate member of European Association of
Neurosurgical Societies - EANS is the unique professional association based on individual membership of
neurosurgeons from all neurosurgical societies all over Southeast Europe geographically and demographically.
Southeast Europe Neurosurgical Society - SeENS is a proffesional, bona fide, non profit neurosurgical organization with
mission to improve neurosurgical care, training and research in Southeast Europe by developing and improving
cooperation and experience exchange amongst neurosurgeons in the region. We are committed to providing the
development of the highest quality of neurosurgical care to benefit the public welfare of the Southeast Europe.
SeENS primary activity is to promote educational neurosurgical activities through regular meetings and practical
trainings, thus providing an excellent opportunity for all fellow neurosurgeons to share their expertise and to develop
personal acquaintance.
e

SeENS is young but strong society with perspective established in 2012. The First S ENS Congress in Belgrade 2013 was
successful scientific and social event. Following our tradition the invited speakers at the Second Congress in Sarajevo
will include the world's leading neurosurgeons and neuroscientists, who will contribute to the exchange of new
knowledge and skills.
This Congress will be supported by relevant Institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
You are welcome to Sarajevo. We are convinced that each of you will have memorable scientific and social
moments in Sarajevo.
On behalf of the SeENS Presidency,

Welcome message - Mayor of Sarajevo

Dear guests, esteemed physicians, ladies and gentlemen,
It is my honour and pleasure to greet the participants of the Second Congress of Neurosurgeons from Southeast Europe
on behalf of the City of Sarajevo and my own behalf!
The hosting of this high level event with the focus on the newest scientific and medical research in the field of
neurosurgery is a recognition to the City of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
We hope that this gathering, which includes both local and internationally acclaimed experts in neurosurgery, will be a
significant contribution to the exchange of experiences and knowledge in this field. Without the exchange of scientific
knowledge, there is no true progress in any field, and that is why this and similar scientific gatherings are more than
necessary.
Let this Congress be a blend of knowledge, experience and new discoveries in the art called helping fellow human
beings.
As Mayor of Sarajevo, I wish the guests to feel welcome in our city, and to feel the spirit and soul of Sarajevo, for which
we are famous in the world, and to take pleasant memories with them.
I would like to sincerely thank all those who enabled the hosting of this prestigious scientific event in our city.
Let me greet you all once more and wish every success to the participants of this eminent assembly.

Mayor of Sarajevo

Congress Host City - Sarajevo

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and

Herzegovina, with an estimated population in the metropolitan
area of 608,354 inhabitants. Nestled within the greater
Sarajevo valley of Bosnia, it is surrounded by the Dinaric Alps
and situated along the Miljacka River in the heart of
Southeastern Europe and the Balkans.
Sarajevo is the leading political, social and cultural center of
Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The city used to be famous for its traditional cultural and
religious diversity, with adherents of Orthodoxy, Islam, Judaism
and Catholicism and coexisting there for centuries. Due to this
long and rich history of religious and cultural variety, Sarajevo
was sometimes called the "Jerusalem of Europe" or "Jerusalem
of the Balkans". It was, until recently in the 20th century, the
only major European city to have a mosque, Catholic church,
Orthodox church and synagogue within the same
neighborhood.

36

A regional center in education, the city is also home to the

Balkans' first institution of tertiary education in the form of an
Islamic polytechnic called the Saraybosna Osmanl Medrese,
today part of the University of Sarajevo.
The settlement in the area stretches back to prehistoric times,
the modern city arose in the 15th century. Sarajevo has
attracted international attention several times throughout its
history. In 1885, Sarajevo was the first city in Europe and the
second city in the world to have a full-time electric tram
network running through the city, following San Francisco. In
1914, it was the site of the assassination of the Archduke of
Austria that sparked World War I. Seventy years later, it hosted
the 1984 Winter Olympics. In the end of the twentieth century,
the city suffered the longest siege of a city in the history of
modern warfare (1.425 days long).
Today, Sarajevo is modern, fast developing European city with
big buildings, oriented to business but still with warm soul.
