The word humanities can

have many different

meanings, the definition of
humanities has changed
over time.
In the middle ages,
humanities as used to
distinguish between areas
of study that pertained to
humans,vis a vis those that
pertained to God.

Areas that belonged to the

human realm: mathematics,

philosophy and science,
were considered part of
humanities.

Today, however, the term is

used to distinguish between

the hardor objective
sciences (e.g.,Math and
Chemistry) and the more
soft or subjective areas of
study (e.g., Art and
Philosophy)

Language and literature

are considered to be
the central topics in
humanities, so the
impact of electronic
communication is of
great concern to those
in the field.

The immediacy of modern

technology and internet

speeds up communication,
but may threaten
deferred forms of
communication such as
literature and dumb
down language.

The library is also changing rapidly as bookshelves are

replaced by computer terminals

Despite the fact that

humanities will have

to adapt rapidly to
these changes, it is
unlikely that the
tradition forms of arts
will be completely
abandoned.

The words HUMANUS and HUMANITIES came from Latin stem

HOMIN referring to MAN.

Unlike biological and physical sciences, emphasizing on the physical

aspects of man and of nature., and are concerned with observable

facts and discovery of universal truth, the humanities deals with the
branches of study pertaining to cultural achievements of man.

Humanities is a field of science that is concerned with human

relations.

Thus, humanities may be defined as the study of mans nature, his

culture, the evolution of his culture, the evolution of his thinking and
ideas, his aspirations and ideals, acquired through the examination of
his works by historical analysis.

Protagoras, a Greek Philosopher, stated

that man is the measure of all things

Implying that the humanities course

where appreciation of the arts can be

strengthened because the artist convey
their thoughts, beliefs, values, and
feelings through the visual arts, literary
arts, dance and music.

Thus, we could define humanities as the

study of how humans have expressed

themselves through the arts throughout
history.

1. It provides man a thorough knowledge of his history and

his cultural tradition.

2. It also helps man to acquire the values and wisdom that

are essential for human survival and progress.

3. It helps man develop critical thinking, which is important

in is everyday life by exposing him to varied concepts,

ideas and forms that man has created.

4. It can help promote mans intellectual, social, moral and

aesthetic development.
