Green Building Material in India

Wienerberger Accredited by Green Building Council

Wienerberger India has always believed in the concepts of sustainability through all its
endeavors, right from procuring raw materials, to the production methodology and the products
that we offer, are all bound by principles of sustainability. Some of the initiatives in this respect
includes:

1) Disilting of Clay Tanks

2) Use of locally available products
3) Use of waste products from other industries
4) Efficient use of Biomass & other environmentally friendly fuels in manufacturing

Apart from these, we continuously recycle heat & energy in the production process and
systematically adopt various conservation projects in our plant on a regular basis.

Wienerberger products (Porotherm HP, THERMOBRICK) has been rated by the Indian Green
Building Council (IGBC) & GRIHA (Green Rating For Integrated Habitat Assessment)
developed by TERI (The Energy and Resource Institute) two of the premium organizations
dealing with green building in India.

What are Green Buildings?

Buildings (Commercial or Residential) are one of the main dominant consumers of natural
resources, having a major environmental impact during ones lifetime. As we understand and
accept the impact of the constructed buildings on environment, we need to ensure appropriate
usage and functioning of the resources used in a building.
This process of mindfully using resources in a building is seen as an effort towards creating a
green environment. The buildings constructed using this approach are green buildings

They are low on demand for non-renewable resources,

Maximizes efficiency of the rsources put in use
Provides comfortable and natural environment inside the building

Thus the need of the hour is to construct as many Green Buldings as possible to minimize the
load and demand from natural resources.

What is a Green Building Rating System?

Rating System is an evaluation tool measuring environmental performance of the building

through its life cycle Things that are measured can also be controled. It usually comprises of
criterias established to measure performance of a building on various parameters Eg. Design,
Construction and Operations of the Building. Each criteria is measurable against an
predetermined bench mark performance based on which rating points are been awarded to the
building against each criteria. All points achieved are been added up to arrive at the project rating
.

Globally, Green Building rating systems are largely voluntary in nature but gaining increased
importance as more spaces are been developed with GREEN considerations.

Indian Green Building Council

The IGBC-LEED rating system has been developed based on guidelines of USGBC and
promoted by CII Confederation Of Indian Industries.

We are happy to inform that POROTHERM HP Clay bricks are rated by IGBC under following
criterias:

Energy Efficiency : Lower U values assure better thermal insulation thus providing
comfortable indoor climate reduce energy demand for air conditioning
o U Value : 1.0 W/mK
Material with Recycled Content :
o Raw Material used are industrial waste or recycled materials thus save on
natural resources Eg. coal ash, rice husk, granite slurry etc.
Regional Material : Factory to site distance < 400km
In addition we use De-silted Clay from dead water tanks

What is GRIHA Rating?

GRIHA Green Rating For Integrated Habitat Assessement is a rating system developed
considering Indian Climate Zones and inhabitants requirements indigenously. It is developed to
rate commercial, Institutional and Residential buildings in India, emphasizing national
environmental concerns, regional climatic conditions and locally available solutions.

GRIHA stresses passive solar techniques for optimizing visual and thermal comfort indoors. It
integrates all relevant Indian codes and standards for buildings and acts as a tool to facilitate
implementation of the same.
TERI The Energy Resource Institute was established in 1974 with an aim to focus its activities
and research in fields of energy, environment, sustainable development, mindful use of natural
resources, large scale adaptation of renewable energy resources and technologies and reduction
in all forms of waste and its management.

TERI has also introduced GRIHA, a rating system to adjudge the greenness of buildings, which
has now been adopted by the Ministry of New and Renewable energy, Government of India as a
national rating system.
