Legion Poppy Campaign
Every year, the Legion conducts the Poppy Campaign to

honour those who serve, and to raise funds in support of
veterans and their families. From the last Friday in October
to Remembrance Day, all Canadians can be a part of the
campaign. Wear a poppy, attend a ceremony and show your
recognition for those who gave their lives for our freedom.
Canadians are fiercely proud of our veterans and during
the period leading up to Remembrance Day, millions of
Canadians wear a poppy as a symbol of national pride and
respect, a visual pledge to never forget.
During the Poppy Campaign, thousands of Legion
members from coast to coast to coast volunteer their time
to distribute poppies and raise millions that will support

Canada Post
Community Mailbox Program
Canada Post is temporarily suspending future deployment of the program to convert door-to-door mail
delivery to community mailboxes. We will work collaboratively with the Government of Canada to determine
the best path forward given the ongoing challenges faced
by the Canadian postal system.
Efforts are now underway to place the comprehensive
program on hold in an orderly fashion. This involves
roughly 460,000 addresses across the country which are
currently in the process to be converted to community
mailboxes.
As a result, all conversions planned for November and
December 2015 and those announced for 2016 will be
placed on hold. Customers impacted by this decision will
receive a letter within the next few weeks advising them of
the status of their mail delivery service.
In neighbourhoods where the 10 month internal and
community conversion process is complete, customers
will collect mail and parcels at their community mailbox.
This includes customers set to begin receiving their mail
and parcels in their boxes in October. We remain focused
on maintaining reliable postal service to all Canadians
without disruption.

When we think of birthing babies, often the word labour

brings to mind work, endure, struggle and pain. Yet many
women are now dancing during their labours, leading to shorter births, less pain medication and increased
satisfaction.
Stephanie Larson, a mother of four, started offering
Dancing For Birth classes for pregnant women in 2000,
when she realized that her lifelong love of dance had
helped her give birth naturally.
We are mammals after all. Can you imagine trying to
coax an elephant to give birth on her back with her legs up
in the air? Our maternal instincts tell us to move during
labor and plant our feet on the floor when its time to push.
One way to improve womens birth experiences is to shift
the paradigm from horizontal to vertical birth. says Larson.
By dancing and moving instinctively, using gravity and
positioning to their advantage, women can temporarily
enlarge the dimensions of their pelvis for the babys passage, help their babies rotate and descend, help reduce
unnecessary interventions and enjoy natural pain relief.
Studies confirm that this shortens labor, reduces epidural
requests and reduces c-sections, and dancing in birth
makes it much more fun for moms, dads and caregivers!

In loving memory of Margaret John (1921-2015)
Salmo resident, Helen Margaret John (Dawson) passed away peacefully

on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, three days before her 94th birthday.
She and her husband, Edward, settled in Salmo more than 70 years
ago where they raised their three children, Tom John (Robin) from
Toronto, Merilyn Hicks (Robin) from North Vancouver, and Jennifer
Mobbs (John) from Salmo. Margaret and Ed were blessed with eight
grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Margaret was born in England and moved
to Canada when she was eight years old.
She and her parents settled in Alberta,
started a farm, and then, when she was
fourteen, moved to South Slocan, BC.
She met Ed while playing badminton
and married him in 1941 during the 2nd
World War. They celebrated their 74th
wedding anniversary in April.
In 1945, after the war, the couple moved
to Salmo and opened the Salmo Clothing Store where she and Ed worked for
21 years. Later, Margaret worked as a
journalist for a Trail newspaper and as a
teller with the Salmo Credit Union.
Margaret was very active in the Salmo community. She was a founding member of the Salmo Community Memorial Church and for many
years was a board member on the Church Committee. For the past
forty years, Margaret was a Lay Reader in the Anglican Church. She
started the Girl Guides and Brownies in Salmo and was a Guide leader
and later the Commissioner of Guides for the Salmo Emerald District.
Margaret belonged to the Salmo Pythian Sisters and eventually became
the Grand Chief. For many years, she represented the Mothers of Canada by placing the Silver Cross Mothers Wreath at the Salmo Remembrance Day Ceremonies.
Margaret was very physically active in school, achieving many trophies,

and spent many hours prospecting in the mountains around Salmo. One
of her many pastimes was playing bridge enjoying a social time with
family and friends as well as playing the more serious duplicate game.
Her love of travelling took her across Canada, Europe, South America,
and the Caribbean.
She loved spending time with her family and had a very special relationship with her many great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all.
Her funeral will be held at the Salmo Community Memorial Church on
Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow.

RDCK Reduces Wildfire Risks
The RDCK will undertake six new fuel management

projects this which aim to reduce the risk of wildfires.
A total of 31 hectares will be treated around the Blewett
fire hall, Morning Mountain Recreation Area, Brent
Kennedy School, Chatham Road, Goose Creek and Pass
Creek Park. The work is expected to be completed by
April 30, 2016.
Crews from Debri Resources Ltd. and West Arm Silviculture will cut small understory trees, prune taller trees,
and clean up woody debris from the forest floor. This
will help reduce the amount of available forest fuel and
limit the possibility of forest fires reaching residences,
infrastructure and other assets. The pruning will also
help stop ground fire from getting into the tree canopy.
Small woody debris will be piled and burned or chipped
on site. To do this work safely, access to the areas will be
restricted at times. Closure signs will be in place.
Fuel treatments have shown to mitigate the hazards of
fast spreading wildfire and improve forest health. Property owners can also reduce the risk of fire on their own

Kiesza Joins The Party At Selkirk

College Gala 2015
This years annual showcase of Selkirk College talent on

Nelsons Tenth Street Campus will feature an alumna who
started to piece together a blossoming international pop
star career while studying in the West Kootenay.
The Selkirk College Gala 2015 will take place on November 28 at Mary Hall and feature a delicious three course
meal prepared by the Professional Cook Program students
and served by the Resort & Hotel Management Program
students. The black tie event features entertainment by students in the Contemporary Music & Technology Program
and this years class will be joined on stage by Selkirk College alumna Kiesza. Were thrilled to have Kiesza coming
back to join us on this special evening, says music program
instructor Gilles Parenteau. It wasnt too long ago that she
was a student in our classrooms and performance spaces.
Its going to bring a special touch to what is always a great
evening of fine food, community building and music.
Kiesza arrived to Selkirk College from Calgary as an
18 year old bursting with talent. Honing her craft in the
studios at Nelsons Tenth Street Campus, she graduated in
2009 and continued her music studies at Berklee College
of Music in Boston. In 2014, Kiesza arrived on the international stage with her hit song Hideway which featured
an incredible video that has more than 250 million views
on YouTube. Over the last two years, Kiesza has released
a full-length album, captured three Juno Awards, toured
the world and collaborated with some of the worlds biggest stars like Rhianna. She recently took part in a concert
for the David Foster Foundation in Toronto where she

performed alongside Stevie Wonder.
Kiesza is taking time out to stop into Nelson to reconnect with her former instructors and will be giving a
workshop for current students. She will perform a set at
Gala 2015 on Saturday evening and take part in a Sunday
afternoon meet-and-greet with fans of all ages. This is a
great opportunity to have a former student come back to
a program which helped her achieve her musical goals,
says Parenteau, who corresponds with his former student
on a regular basis and this past summer performed with
her live in New York City on Good Morning America. Its

Money raised at the Sunday meet-and-greet will go
towards a special bursary being established in Kieszas
name. It will be a way to recognize the former student
and her accomplishments in the music industry. We are
proud of every one of our graduates, says Selkirk College
Donor & Alumni Coordinator Joleen Kinakin. A bursary
like this will help future students achieve their goals and
perhaps provide a little inspiration along the way.
The theme of Gala 2015 is Created By Community
which is a nod to all the people who have helped make
Selkirk College a vital part of post-secondary education in
the West Kootenay-Boundary for almost 50 years. Guests
at the gala will enjoy hors doeuvres, the three course meal,

On Saturday, November 7, dancers in the Slocan Valley
and beyond can stick together and dance like winters never
gonna come. The Vallican Whole Community Centre, arguably the Kootenays best dance hall, invites everyone to cut
loose and prepare for the short days and long nights ahead.
Starting at 7 pm, Mental Health Club and friends will
rock the building, inspiring the crowd to shake their booties and other body parts in the kind of high energy, funfilled evening the Whole has been hosting for decades.
This is a licensed event, and refreshments will be served.
Admission is $12. This dance is the first in a series of eclectic cultural event hosted by the Wholes Special Events
Committee, and is a fundraiser for the Rural Alternatives
Research and Training Society. The Whole is at 3762 Little
