Information for Parents

Healthy eating habits start from young, and it is important
to teach your child about the consequences of putting
unhealthy foods into their bodies as well as being
educated

Children aged 7 to 10 should be limited to only 24

grams of sugar a day. That is approximately 6
teaspoons of sugar. [According to Scientific
Advisory Committee on nutrition]

However, studies have shown that kids aged 4-10

consume on average 61 grams A DAY! That is more than
twice the recommended amount for your child.
Most of the childs intake of sugar comes from
consumption of sweetened-drinks [Retrieved from SACN]
Therefore, it is important to understand the effects of
sweetened drinks on your child and the measures that
could be done to resolve it.

How does sugar affect your child?

" Increases the risk of gaining weight and developing type 2
diabetes when older
" Higher chance of dental cavities
" Bad habit formed from addiction to sugar, which lead into
adulthood and paves the way for more diseases. [Information
retrieved from Boston Public Health Commission website]
