QUESTION 1 (25 marks)


a) Define a vector quantity.

b) At t = 0 a particle of mass 5 kg moving in the xy plane with a velocity of V1 = (6.00i +3.00j) m/s
and is at the point r0 = (2.00i 3.00j). At t = 5.0 s the particles velocity is
V2 = ( 18.00i + 14.00j) m/s. Find the:
i.
ii.

acceleration of the particle.

d) State the law of conservation of linear momentum.

e) A spherical object travelling with a velocity V = (78 i - 9.0 j) m/s makes a glancing collision
with a second object at rest. One of the objects is observed after the collision to be moving with
a velocity V1 = 54 m/s at a 30 angle to the original incoming objects direction as shown in
figure 1 below. Calculate the:
