Lesson Objective:
Students will apply the TWA reading strategy before, during, and after a
reading of the opening story in chapter 7 of Ecce Romani.
Rationale:
In their research, Hedin, Mason and Gaffney (2011) showed that the TWA
strategy improves comprehension for students with attention-related
disabilities. This strategy will help all students, and particularly those with
attention deficit disorders, to better focus their thinking in specific directions
and to get the most out of their reading and translating. The strategy consists of
the following steps:

Context:
This will be an introductory lesson to the topic of plural direct object endings.
Students are familiar with singular direct object endings, so what they are
learning is building directly on what they have already learned.
Time:

Activity:
Instruction re: strategy and handout. Students
will fill out the handout as they progress
through reading the story. We will complete
steps 1 and 2 as a whole class at the beginning.
I will model examples of the kind of
information I am looking for, for steps 1 and 2.

Materials:
10 copies of TWA handout
and textbooks.

As a whole class, we will translate chapter 7.


Comm. This will involve rereading parts as I draw

attention to plural direct object endings.
(os/as/es) and link to previous knowledge of
singular direct object endings (um/am/em). I
will provide guided practice for step 3
(Linking Knowledge) by writing a table on
the board containing the different endings as a
way to link singulars and plurals.

Independent practice - Students will summarize
the story and state what they learned. As a
wrap-up, students will share items with the
whole class. I will check for understanding of
the new concept.
Differentiated Instruction / Adaptations:
TWA is an academic strategy intended to assist students with attention deficit difficulties when reading.
This strategy is specifically targeted at Emma the student I observed but the majority of her small
class suffer from mild attention issues.
Ongoing Informal Assessments:
Questions will act as comprehension
checks during translation. Asking students
to share what they filled in for Linking
Knowledge and What I learned will
serve to check for understanding.

Formal Assessments/Evaluation of the lesson:


I can collect in the handouts to read over, but not grade, after
class. This assignment is not appropriate for grading,
however the information written in steps 2, 3, 6 will provide
a great deal of information for me as a teacher that I can use
to shape future lessons.
