Importance of Calibration Base vs. Solve

Creating the baseline model (Base button) enables the
dependent proposed hardware models to be calibrated
Mandatory for System z and System i models
Not mandatory for open systems modeling
Highly recommended if you have measured cache hit
statistics

Create Base ONCE, then use Solve for subsequent

what-if scenarios
If you learn nothing else in this class learn this:
Create Base ONCE, then use Solve for subsequent scenarios

Skew
A value that expresses the amount of IO that occurs on a subset of data.
Used by Disk Magic to model and predict performance of a given configuration
Can be estimated or in some cases calculated by Disk Magic - from data sourced by
DSCLI commands and TPC reports from some DS8000 systems.

Below are the predefined skew levels in Disk Magic

Very Low Skew (2)

Extremely conservative level

High percent of IO across high percent of data / capacity

Low Skew (3.5)

Intermediate Skew (7)
High Skew (14)

Due to some positive field experience this value was promoted to the default and often
recommended value
High percent of IO across relatively small portion of data capacity

Very High Skew (24)

Aggressive approach, you should have a reason to anticipate this value, or model it among
several possibilities.

42
Copyright IBM Corporation 2014

42

Skew - Graph

In this chart the intermediate skew curve (the middle one) indicates that for a fast tier capacity of 20% Easy Tier
would move 79% of the Workload (I/Os) to the fast tier.
43
Copyright IBM Corporation 2014

43

Easy Tier Disk Magic Capabilities

Supports input of the anticipated skew level

Disk Magic predefined skew value to explore possible impacts Or

Calibrated / measured value from data collected in some environments

Example 1: TPC reports plus DSCLI command output from existing DS8000 systems
Example 2: Calculated from some Zseries data collections

The skew tells Disk Magic how much IO to assign to each tier.

44
Copyright IBM Corporation 2014

44

Easy Tier Disk Magic Capabilities (continued)

Automatically explore impact of skew variation by modeling & charting

multiple skew rates in one command.

45

46

Copyright IBM Corporation 2014

46

Easy Tier Disk Magic Capabilities (continued)

Report function quantifies the configured tiers and the resultant amount of
IO assigned to each tier for the chosen/solved skew.
This example used a high
skew (14)
7% of the capacity is SSD
72% of the IO routed to SSD

Note: All standard charting functions utilization of other disks, response

time, etc., reflect any improvement achieved based on the configuration i.e. the disks you populated in the tiers, the chosen skew rate, etc.
