Phosphinosuccinic Oligomer (PSO)

Chemical Identity and Synonyms

Phosphinosuccinic Oligomer
PSO
The chemical identity of this material is considered proprietary
information

Physical Chemical Properties

Clear, light yellow liquid

Slight acidic odor
Miscible in water
pH 3.1
Vapor pressure 15.6 mm Hg @ 100o F/20o C

Nalco Products

3D TRASAR 3DT177, 3DT179, 3DT180, (This list only represents the

products with the high sales volumes that contain this specific material)
Products supplied in non-returnable containers and PORTA-FEEDS
(automates application of the product).

Product Uses

Provides cathodic (pitting) corrosion inhibition by forming a protective

film. Replaces pyrophosphate, inorganic polyphosphate, zinc, molybdate
in conventional applications. Offers superior performance over
alternatives and is more environmentally friendly by replacing zinc and
molybdate and by reducing the level of total phosphate in the system.
Inhibits calcium carbonate scale formation
Used in a variety of cooling water applications in a variety of industries
and institutions

Chemical Related Health Information

Based on animal studies, PSO is not expected to be harmful if swallowed

or absorbed through the skin.
Repeated ingestion of the substance by animals showed low toxicity.
The substance is not irritating to the eyes or skin.
The substance does not cause an allergic reaction in the skin.
PSO is not expected to cause damage to genetic material (DNA or
chromosomes).

Based on models used by the EPA, the substance is not expected to be

carcinogenic.

Chemical Related Environmental Information

Based on environmental toxicity studies, PSO is not harmful to fish,

aquatic invertebrates or water plants.
The substance is not expected to bioaccumulate.
Although this material will degrade in the environment, the rate of
degradation is not expected to be rapid.

Chemical Exposure Potential

Engineering controls are in place at Nalco facilities to reduce exposures of

this material to employees, stakeholders, and the environment.
The material is not released to the air.
The packaged products are warehoused and any spills in the warehouse
that are not immediately contained, naturally drain to our process water
waste treatment. The spilled material is then segregated to different tanks
for disposal or treatment, depending on the severity of the spill. All
treated wastewater is monitored and analyzed continually for compliance
with state and local regulation.
Nalco uses this material in products intended for industrial applications.
Potential exposure to Nalco products is limited to those individuals
working at the customers facility or site.
Although the hazards of this substance are low, it is good industrial
practice to minimize exposure to any chemical. Use of gloves and eye
protection (safety glasses) is recommended.
Nalco recommends feeding the product into the cooling water system with
an automatic closed feed. This optimizes product performance and
reduces potential exposure to workers at these facilities.
This substance is not used in consumer applications and exposure to the
general public is not expected during anticipated industrial use of this
substance.

Chemical Risk Mitigation

Risk is measured as a function of hazard and exposure. This material has

low hazards for humans and the environmental.
Under normal conditions of anticipated use and when used with
appropriate handling procedures and PPE, the overall potential risk of this
material to human health and the environment is low.
As with all chemicals, care must be taken to prevent its release to the
environment. In the event of a chemical release or spill Nalco has
procedures in place that will reduce the potential human and/or
environmental exposure through containment and remediation efforts.
