The 100
Summary
The world is destroyed. It is now known as the ground and the last survivors of the human race
orbit a radioactive earth in a craft called the Arch. Survival is the theme featured in the CW series
The 100. Upon discovering that the Archs oxygen supply could not sustain the lives of the
thousands for three more months the leaders of the Arch release 100 juvenile delinquents to fall
to the ground thus creating a community with the same domain,survival, but very different
literacy practices. The main actors are The 100 youths sent to see if earth is habitable. The
Ground youths speak with fists, knives, and blood. Violence is commonplace although some
actors try to preserve the sense of civility brought with them from the arch. Others accept the
new method of communicating through violence. It would be commonplace to threaten
someones life pull a nice of physically attack a stranger. Anything goes. The main actors include
Clark a daughter or a doctor plays as a leader and a physician. Finn plays as a leader along with
Bellamy and his minions. They are a community of leaders. They use verbal communication
draw maps and sketches as well as audio and video transmission to their mother ship. They all
simply want to survive and often butt heads trying to do it their own ways. Their domain is the
interest and survival of the people. Ultimately they each have individual skill sets that they
utilize as a group to help the entire camp survive.
*Please note that the show is very fast paced. The scenes switch settings several times within a
couple minutes. It is critical to associate certain characters with certain settings in order to best
understand the observations. The observations are recorded in real time of the episode i.e. 1:02
being one minute and 2 seconds in real time.*

Questions and Definitions of Importance

Figured World- a large community with a society that has expected rules and regulations for
acceptable behavior
Describe the setting or figured world on your topic.
The 100 takes place in the future both on earth and on the Arch, a spaceship orbiting Earth with
the remaining human population on it. The earth has been destroyed by nuclear war and this
series takes place just as radiation reaches a habitable level. The Archs objective is to have
humans survive in space until they can return to the ground otherwise known as earth. The
earth is not as it was animals and vegetation have evolved to survive in a totally knew ecosystem.
Overall the earth is a dangerous new environment for those from the Arch.
Domain- A common principle or belief that binds a group of people is a domain. The function of
a domain is basically a universal interest of a group. It can be broad or extremely specific. Most
importantly it requires a form of group learning and sharing. Simply liking the same thing as
someone else does not define it as a domain because they are not bonding over it until they
participate in activities together related to their common interest.
The domain of the series is simply survival. No matter the people group, grounders and 100
alike, are all trying to survive. This unites the groups separately but also creates the extreme
hostility between the groups as each is a perceived threat to the others survival. Everyone may
have different jobs or functions in their respective societies but all are trying to survive.
Actors- a person that has particular job in their society
What roles are people playing?
Clark: She is the daughter of the number one medic on the Arch. She is arrested
for a public scandal with her father that would reveal critical and damaging information
to the Arch.plays the role of a doctor and number one leader. She has the propensity to
care for others and keep a level head and steady hand. Throughout the series she falls in
love with Finn.
Finn: Finn is a social rebel who was arrested for walking in space outside the
aircraft. This is illegal for regular civilians. At first he was perceived as the wanna-be
badass but actually develops into a voice of reason. His critical thinking skills sense of
justice and compassion for others keeps the camp alive numerous times.
Bellamy: He is the violent leader. He resolves conflict with conflict but serves as
a great protector and is the muscle of the leaders.
Octavia:She is Bellamys younger sister. She was born illegally as the Arch had
population laws to maintain life on the Arch for longer. She is the wild child and the most
impulsive. She is not necessarily a leader but more of a connection between the grounder
world and the 100 through her relationship with Lincoln.

 Lincoln: At first he was held hostage and tortured for capturing Octavia. But it
turned out that he took Octavia out of the forest to his cave because she was in immediate
danger of other grounders. He has been watching her for weeks and has fallen in love
with her. He understands the 100 unlike the rest of his people and only wants peace
between the grounders and the 100.
Raven : She is a mechanic who appears on a single craft from the arch a couple
weeks after there dropship lands. She is Finns ex-lover and saves the 100 by inventing
weapons.

What artifacts are important?
The Arch is where all the humans from the 100 originate from. It is a large
spacecraft caught in Earths orbit.

Communities of Practice- The relationships built from having a common domain forms a
community of practice. It requires interaction between all members. For example people who

wear Jordan basketball shoes are not a community of practice unless they meet discuss and
maybe even design basketball shoes together. It requires all participants to be active. In the 100 it
is the hunters in the 100 form an elite group along with gatherers and the leaders.
Practices of the Community- The action that is required to create a proper community of practice
is called practice. Therefore the group of Jordan shoe fans become a community of practice
when they engage in a discussion and even design shoes together. Most people engage in
numerous practices together such as classroom learning sports and clubs. This is the primary way
humans learn and live in.

23:50-27:50 Clark ate nuts too. she starts bad tripping about the arch and her old jail cell and
father whom her own mother murdered. They speak about forgiveness

28:10 Dax Finds the shelter after tracking them and then knocks Clark out so he can kill
Bellamy. He takes a gun.

eye contact and then Lincoln vanishes

murderer he literally fights his demons. The Chancellor and Bellamys conversation is themed
with peace of death and who deserves death as a reward.
32:08 Bellamy's trip about the Chancellor ends and Dax is over him with a gun but Clark appears
with her gum aimed at Dax creating a draw

33:02 Bellamy attacks Dax but he's weak from tripping but wins by stabbing him in neck with
bullet shell (note guns have only killed humans from Arch so far)

The 100 S01 E10
What you missed in (E09): Finn found Lincoln and arranged a peace meeting with the princess
of grounders and Clark the "princess" of the 100. (That is her in affectionate nickname) The rule
was no weapons. Clark asked Bellamy to follow her Finn and Lincoln with guns for back up
without Finn or Lincoln knowing. Chaos occurred and the war between 100 and grounder
began.
The Exodus ship from the Arch attempted to land on Earth. It was commandeered by an angry
workers revolt before launching and proceeded to take-off crash landed and left no known
survivors.
The 100 youths are now visiting the crash site the morning after it collided with earth.

..The camp has woken up and each member is taking turns going into the tent with the
radio to speak with their loved ones back on the Arch
(0:49)Raven says Clark's mom was in the ship. and wants to know why ship crashed
Bellamy warns all to be careful because the grounders might attack.
(00:51)Finn accuses Bellamy of starting the war because he brought guns as back up.
(2:12)Clark finds Hydrazine (an explosive substance) Raven explains its properties and coats
pebble in liquid, throws it and it explodes when it lands.
(4:38)Tripwire was hit back at camp. Murphy has returned from being banished previously for
the attempted murder of a small girl. He has been beat to hell
(4:50)Clark Bellamy Finn and Raven return and question Murphy.
(5:04)He has been tortured by grounder and ran back to their camp.

(5:20)Finn objects to him being killed because he could know inside info about grounders. Clark
agrees and moves to care for Murphy's wounds.
(6:11)Apparently tortured Bellamy demands to know what Murphy told the grounders.
"Everything." Clark agree to heal him and get information but banish him once again after he has
been used.or else Murphy will be killed.
(8:33)Arch radio isn't working. Raven apologizes about Clark's mom. Clark CRIES BLOOD.
(9:07)Half a dozen people are experiencing uncontrollable bleeding due to internal hemorrhagic
fever.
(10:02)A disease strikes camp through Murphy.Its biological warfare.
(11:01)Finn rushes in to check on Clark
(11:38)man convulses and dies in camp due to fever.
(11:59)Clark instructs Finn to quarantine the sick in the camp.
(12:30)Octavia is in her tent looking at Lincoln's sketches
(13:03)Bellamy finds Octavia to make sure she doesn't have the virus
(14:00)Clark is leading the quarantine and Checks Octavia. Octavia isn't infected but Clark wants
her to stay in quarantine. she then asks her to sneak out to find Lincoln to ask him for a cure.
(15:06)Octavia enters Lincoln's cave. He checks to see if she is infected. He knew what was
coming. He says there is no cure. the sickness passes quickly. it is used to weaken the battle field
for an easier victory for the grounders who are attacking the 100 camp at first light.
(16:16)Lincoln says he is leaving before his people attack and wants Octavia to go with him she
agrees but says she has to warn her people first. They kiss.
(17:30) Clark tells Bellamy she sent Octavia to find Lincoln for the cure.
(18:00)Another person among the healthy drops dead and chaos follows when people pull guns
on each other.
(18:30)Clark fires a gun in the air to stop the madness
(18:38) She then faints from being weak and Finn catches her
(19:32)Octavia tells everyone the grounders plan and that there is no cure and follows Finn
carrying Clark into the dropship
(20:33)Clark tells Finn to save himself and run from camp to avoid the grounders attack.he
refuses.
(20:55) Finn has idea to slow grounders down

(21:42)Finn enters ammunition tent and pitches his idea to blow up the bridge connecting the
grounders side of the river to where their camp is.

The 100 S01E13
What you missed in (E11 and E12):
Clarke and Finn hunt together with one other 100 member but wind up getting captured by
grounders. Clark is forced to try and heal a grounder because their medicine man has just died. In
the end the grounder dies and Finn is taken to be executed along with Clark. Lincoln was masked
and actually helped them escape grounder camp and the three try to get back to 100 camp
unscathed. They must leave to tell the 100 that the grounders are attacking at daybreak.
Meanwhile on the Arch the oxygen is only enough for 51 days and the ship is a wreck because
the Exodus ship force launched and damaged the Arch. The Arch people are facing the fact that
their lives are over when Jaha suggests launching the entire Arch into Earths orbit in hopes of
landing on Earth.

..The battle between grounder and 100 is yet to begin. The camp has just gotten over a struggle
with the outcast Murphy who tried to exact revenge on those who banished him and shot up the
drop ship. He has been defeated and now the camp is worried over a possible attack from the
grounders...
(1:57) Murphy has shot Raven. Clark cauterize do her would in the drop ship and now they need
to run from the grounders because they attack at first light
(2:24) Finn tells Bellamy to stay and try to fight if that's what he wants
(3:14) the camp is officially mobile and fleeing to the sea

(3:57) Bellamy decides to leave

(5:14) A ninja star slices into a boys head. Jasper yells Grounders.
(6:22) they have fleas back to base camp and now are deciding if it is just a scout and whether or
not they can continue to travel to the sea
(6:59) Clark decides to stay and fight
(7:40) Octavia leaves to fight with gunman
(7:59) the leaders go over their weapons
(8:02) they have built grenades and landmines
(9:07) Clark proposes to start engines and BBQ the grounders with the rockets
(10:38) Back on the Arch the people are reviewing options to land the arch on earth because they
have 51 hours of oxygen left in space.
(11:34) Raven and Clark and Finn are working on drop ship to prepare it to fire the rockets.
Raven says she can't feel her legs
(12:11) the bullet is in Ravens spine, she has internal bleeding and probably won't survive
according to Clark
(13:08) Finn suggests using a coagulant to slow the bleeding but the only one is in Lincoln's old
cave. He must slow the bleeding to save Raven because she is the only one with the knowledge
to fire the rockets.
(13:40) Finn leaves to fetch coagulant he and Clark share a moment in which Clark says she can't
lose him again.
(13:50) The Arch is preparing to ground. They officially leave orbit to ground!
it fails
(15:18) Someone has to launch the Arch Manually meaning they have to die for the good of the
people.
(16:07) the jerk from lost volunteers
(16:44) It actually works they are out of orbit
(17:19) it was actually Senator Jaha that launched the ship. He did it so Abby can see Clark and
He can see his son.
(17:54) The grounders war drums begin
(19:03) Paranoia sets in they fire at anything
(19:15) Clark is still looking for engine Finn is still gone and they can hear all the battle updates
through the walkie talkie
(19:47) Raven enter nostalgia because she is dying Clark says she would pick her first
(22:10) The grounders are waiting bullets by playing with the 100's. They have the walky Talky
from when Monty fell and Murphy to torture for information. They officially decide to attack.
(23:29)!The war begins Bellamy gets into a 1/1 scuffle and Octavia appears and kills the
grounder on top of him but gets hit by an arrow in the process.
(24:18) Finn gets to Lincoln's old cave to get medicine and discovers Lincoln is there. He gets
medicine and then Lincoln agrees to come with him to protect him.

(24:39) Finn has an idea to get the reapers to chase them back to camp and kill the grounders.
(reapers are cannibal mine dwellers and are rejects of the grounders and results of radioactive
mutations basically the most animalistic version of a human)
(25:13) Raven is now unconscious but not dead.
(25:42) The grounders have breached the lines and are headed for the wall around the camp.
(26:09) just at the peak of the battle the Arch appears in the sky.
(27:04) The grounders proceed to attack but Lincoln and Finn have officially lead the reapers
back to the camp and the battle transitions into a fight between reapers and grounders
(27:58) Finn returns to the inside of Camp. Clark updates him on Ravens status.
(29:13) Lincoln finds Octavia and Bellamy and offers to help her because she is hit.
(29:44) Bellamy tells Octavia to go with Lincoln they hug goodbye and he tells Lincoln to keep
her safe.
(30:37) The grounders breach the wall.
(31:49) Bellamy gets attacked by the lead grounder. Finn rushes in with a gun to save him.
(32:36) Clark leaves Finn on the battlefield enters the ship and closes the door to save her people.
(33:39) The grounder princess slides through gate before it is closed.
(34:00) Clark tells her she can't win someone knock Princess Anya out and they proceed to kick
her Clark tells them to stop. Jasper successfully starts rockets and the grounders are fried.
(35:09) some of the Arch adults have landed safely including Abby. she proceeds to describe
earth to Jaha over radio and he tells her to find their people and Clark.
(39:17) Clark and the camp emerge from the drop ship.
The grounders were eliminated.
bones and ash cover the ground like a site from
Hiroshima.
(40:15) The camp
is suddenly engulfed in red mist by smoke grenades from the alleged Mountains men's. Anya and
the 100 fall to the ground upon inhaling the smoke. Men with gas masks and Laser pointers and
machine guns appear.
(40:41) Clark awakens in a white sterile room. like a hospital. The sign across the halls say
it's a quarantine ward...

Allusions and literary/historic parallels:

Clark- she is curious and the first to lead the way and discover something new. Just like Clark
from Lewis and Clark expeditions.

Mt. Meriweather- The mountain Clark was at first trying to reach. Meriweather is the first name
of Lewis from the duo Lewis and Clark.
Octavia- sister to leader Bellamy but in history a sister to Caesar both brothers were very violent
Lincoln- A grounder who wants peace between peoples like President Lincoln in the Civil War
era.
Finn- his name is an allusion to Huckleberry Finn because he helps Lincoln (the hostage) escape
and eventually runs away with him for a bit.
Murphy- the character in the show is just like the common epigram everything bad that can
happen, happens to or because of him like Murphys Law.

Interview

Tell me about what you would do if you were part of the 100.

"I would work towards survival. I would definitely be worried about the emerging society and be
worried about food. I would use the night to hunt and focus on building during the day.

Tell me what you like about the 100 society?

I like the primitive nature the environment brings out. The fight for survival is what everybody
connects with and it brings out the honesty in people.

Tell me what concerns you about the way the 100 leaders make decisions?

"I actually like the leadership. The two leaders play good cop bad cop. They balance each other.
One makes the hard decisions while the other shows mercy. This balance is good."

Tell me what stands out to you about the 100s approach to problem

solving.
"They don't reflect a lot. They make their decisions based on feelings and what they feel is right."

What would "Finn" have done differently if he was in charge of keeping

the grounder
hostage.
"Finn is very close to Clark. He would do anything for her and i think that includes
torture. the hostage would have still been beaten just maybe not so hard because Clark
would tell Finn to.

Describe how the sketches Lincoln leaves for the 100 could help them

later on.
"No. They were just a gift for Octavia."

Describe why Bellamy has such a violent approach to almost anything.

"He is angry because of his old life on the Arch having to hide his sister and submit to the Arch
authority. He wants to finally be in control so much that he is desperate."

What different approaches could have been used to communicate with the

grounders.
"They did the best they could. They had trouble with grounders even when they landed because a
piece of the ship landed on their village. They are too primitive to reason well. It is like old
times. Before the 100 even landed the grounders already had an army. This shows that they
always need to fight with somebody so there was no way around violence.
