turned their attention away for a moment allowed the pilot to flee
the concert hall, running several blocks to safety with only one
thought on his mind his family.
He was quite overcome at the time and said they were just
shooting people, his father said. He had considered just playing dead like everyone else, but that wasnt stopping them. They
were just indiscriminately shooting at people and he said as he
was running to the door, he was expecting to feel a bullet in his
back. He said, he truly thought in his mind, this was it, that that
was the end.
The Bataclan Concert Hall was one of several locations, including the Stade de France football stadium and a number of cafes
and bars, in Paris that fell victim to the frightening attacks. While
the Strathmore survivor was among those fortunate enough to
escape unscathed, 89 concertgoers at the hall perished that night.
Since then numerous locations in France have been dedicated to
mourn the losses of loved ones totalling 129 deaths and 349 injured as a result of the attacks.
You never think those types of things touch us here in little old
Strathmore, the father said. I dont want to ever, ever, come this
close to losing a child again. It was a little too close.

Friends of East Wheatland have a vision for the new school that includes
competing with the top schools in the
province for rural education and providing a multi-purpose facility beyond
classroom hours.
Wed like to make sure there is an
academic component for our students
but also a benefit to the community
at the same time, said Greg Lendvay,
Friends of East Wheatland Society
member. Thats just a wave of the future. There are such high expenses and
buildings sit empty outside of 9 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. academic programming. Its
community and tax-based supporting
schools. Theres a huge advantage of
having a community and in particular
seniors involved in your school.
Lendvay added that all the kids are
going to be bused to the school, and
in effort to accommodate the student
upon arrival at the school there needs
to be a set regime of fitness and gymnasium components to keep kids busy
at lunch hours.
Wheatland County Chief Administrative Officer, Alan Parkin, said staff will
have to evaluate everything.
We will take a close look at the budget, said Parkin. We will evaluate any
possible funding scenarios and provide council with recommendations so
they can make the decision. There is
no decision at this time.
Parkin expects the issue to be
brought back before council in December.

We hear much about bowel cancer in the media
lately. Those in the under 50 age group often dont
pay too much attention to this information because
somehow bowel cancer is thought of as an old
persons disease. Bowel cancer can affect about
20% of people under 50. So if you have abdominal
pain, blood in your stools or notice a change in your
bowel habits, see your doctor.
As of January 2016, Health Canada is introducing
changes in the labeling of ho-meopathic nosodes.
These are being sold as an alternative to vaccinations.
There is no evidence they work to protect against
diseases and in fact will make children more
susceptible to disease if they are not being vaccinated.
Speaking of vaccinations, measles is starting to rear
its head again. Stats Canada reported that 89% of
2-year olds had received the recommended number of
immu-nizations agains measles, mumps and rubella
in 2013. For best protection of Ca-nadians, this
number should be 95% to prevent any outbreaks from
occurring.
Ensure your children received all the recommended
vaccinations.
The words herd immunity describes the ideal
number of individuals in a given population who
have immunity, through vaccination or previous
exposure, to con-fer protection to those who arent
immunized. This herd immunity will prevent a
contagious bacteria or virus from setting up a chain
of infection.
If you have any questions about immunization,
check with our pharmacists. We have the reliable
information to keep you well-informed.

This summer, the Canadian Rockies International Rodeo
and Music festival introduced Son of Ray who, as a newly
formed band, performed together for the first time.
On Saturday, the band will return to Strathmore, and strip
their music to showcase a folk sound rather than a rock feel.
When Calgary-based singer-songwriter Rob Lagace started
out as a one-man show, with a kick-drum, guitar, and harmonica, he attracted the attention of the Strathmore Musical
Arts Society during his performance at Rosebuds 15 Minutes
WHEN WE CAN
TAKE THE
WORRY OUT
OF WINTER
of Fame. Since then, the one-man show grew into a fourpiece band by adding guitar player Mike Fournier, bass player Bob Richardson, and drummer Jeff Towers. Yet when the
band returns to Strathmore, they will strip their sound back
to a kick-drum, harmonica, and brushes on a snare drum.
Were stripping it down to a little bit more of an acoustic
sounding set and thats just based on the venue were playing and what the Strathmore music group is looking for,
said Lagace.
We have a full band and having the ability to play different venues with a different sound is really a great thing,
because it allows us a lot more selection and availability for
these different kind of shows.
Lagace grew up surrounded by a musical family in Port
Colborne, Ont. With uncles, parents, and cousins always
singing and playing music, the transition into high school
band was an easy one for Lagace. Although he put music
on the backburner when he became a teacher, which he
continues to be, he quickly realized he wasnt pursuing his
passion. As a result, Lagace became a substitute teacher for
elementary schools and uses his free time to perform with
the band.
Music has just been a big part of my life for a long time,
Lagace added. I call it roots music. Roots music to me is
bringing music back to its roots and the traditional roots
music is folk and country and blues, and I feel like our music
really blends those three together. In my opinion its kind of
what early rock and roll was. Its bringing rock back to its
roots and having that traditional blend of country, blues, and
a little bit of funk and boogie to it.
Son of Ray will be performing at the Strathmore Golf
Course on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. For more information and to
hear some of their music, visit www.sonofraymusic.com.

The province will not fund a corporation, said Harwood. Thats why it
has to go through a municipality. The
province is funding it, but we want the
municipal shares to be paid through the
county. Hussar and Standard could not
afford that portion. Gleichen is obviously a hamlet the county controls, we
would have to pay that regardless.
Harwood said one plant in Gleichen
is roughly between $5-6 million and
the county could get all of their water
with their municipal shares for the same
price range.
Wheatland County Reeve Glenn
Koester put a motion on the floor that
the county will forfeit $750,000 to the
Wheatland Regional Water to facilitate
the costs of the Standard water treatment plant. The motion was passed.
Construction is expected to finish on
time next spring.

On Nov. 7, a sport called Barn
Hunt made its first appearance in
Alberta, in Strathmore, as it was
in the plans for eight months
prior to the event. The poochonly sport gives the dogs the
opportunity to use their hunting
senses to track down rodents in
hay bales.
The Strathmore Ag Society
was great to work with, so thats
why we came here, said Mary

volunteers had been wonderful, people just stepping up to
the plate, doing what needs to
be done. Id say about 90 per
cent of the people here have not
done this before. Some of them
have never seen it live.

Its been eight years in the making for Crowther
Memorial Junior High School senior boys volleyball
team, but they finally became champions after knocking off the Okotoks Ocelots in a thrilling three-set
finals match in the year-end zone tournament.
After finishing second place numerous times, including to the same Ocelots team a season ago, senior
boys volleyball coach Brad Huntley was excited for
the team to finally win the banner.
I was really excited for the boys, they earned it this
year, said Huntley. They deserved to win the banner
and for the game to end up that close makes it sweet,
but it also makes it stressful.
Huntley gave his squad credit for being mentally
engaged in the games, and combining that with every
aspect of the teams game, became the deciding factor
in winning gold.
Even though our serving game struggled, they
picked up their mental game, said Huntley. And
that way they just didnt fall out of the game. They
couldve but they stuck in there but beyond that, our
passing and setting was extremely good this weekend. Our offence was solid with some extremely hot
points where they were heating up and hitting like
high school hitters.
For the senior girls, being hosts on their side of the
tournament was more about team building and showing strides in improving their overall game.
It all came together of what weve been working on all season, said coach Lindsay Hall. They all
played strong in every game and we dont have a lot
of girls either. We had some injuries, girls away at
other sports. People stepped up, they did really good.

The Wheatland Warriors are starting
to find their rhythm after picking up a
pair of wins in their two games over
the weekend, as they continued to battle for top spot in an ultra-tight South
Division.
The guys are starting to come together and building a little bit of chemistry,
said head coach Cody Brown. I think
were taking a step in the right direction here. Everybodys kind of starting
to know where each other is out there
and were seeing a big difference.
In the 4-3 win over Okotoks, Brown
felt as though the team was able to capitalize at opportune times.
Our scoring right now is fairly spread
out, everybodys contributing and its
definitely paying off for us, he said.
Ben Kruse scored three goals to lead
the charge, while Kyle Bray added one
goal to round out the offense.
Brown added in the 8-2 win against
Lethbridge on Sunday was a prime example of what his team can do when
they play a full 60 minutes.
