Asian Medical Student Conference; The World of

Geriatrics.
The 36th edition of the Asian Medical
Students conference was held in
Singapore from 5th to 12th of July in
association with Asian Medical
Students Association (AMSA)
Singapore and support of the Yong Loo
Lin School of Medicine with the
conference theme Geriatric MedicineEmbracing the Silver Tsunami. The
field of Geriatrics focuses with the
health of elderly population. Around
450 medical students from 25
different countries like India, Nepal,
Malaysia, China, etc. congregated in
the heart of Singapore, making an
amazing atmosphere for learning,
sharing experiences and debating over
a subject. Tajdit Rahman Tanim from
Sir Salimullah Medical College, Sazzad
Shahriar Siam from Delta Medical
College and me, Adnan Abdullah from
Chittagong Medical College
participated in the conference and
represented Bangladesh.
Well-furnished and state of the art
rooms of UTown located within the
National University Singapore, one of
the worlds top universities, were
served for our accommodation. All the
delegates were housed in their
respective groups and the Welcome
Dinner undergone with music and
games to break the ice. The Honorable
Health Minister of Singapore rang the
bell to inaugurate the conference the
following day. The conference theme
of Geriatric Medicine was explored in
greater depth through lectures given
by eminent researches on the field of

Geriatrics who shared with us the

latest development in the field.
Research paper from Bangladesh was
selected among top ten papers and
was presented in front of the Keynote
Speakers. There were also Poster and
Photography Competition as part of
the academic session.
Singapore is a country of rich diversity
of people with their unique culture.
During our sightseeing in Little India
and Chinatown we get to blend in with
the locals and experience their culture
and taste local exotic foods. At night,
we get to adventure in the Night Safari
and experience the wild Singapore.
The key attraction for me is
undoubtedly the Marina Bay Sands
itself. It is an architectural landmark
and I was left completely mesmerized
by the unbelievable view.
We also engaged in community
services where we spent a day playing
games, sharing our experiences and
bonding with the old population from a
nursing home. As a part of geriatrics,
it is pivotal to understand the
psychology of the elders and this was
a fun way of interacting with them and
to experience what they are feeling.
We had tours to local community clinic
to see the advancement in their health
care sector and how they manage
their patients. We have been
introduced to their cutting edge
technologies for the treatment and
caring of their older population.
Bangladesh, being a developing

country, is still lacking in palliative

caring and pain management related
to old population. Therefore we
acquired valuable insights in the
management of elderly population and
to tackle future problems that our
country is going to face.
To top it all off for an amazing
conference experience, the Gala
Cultural Night and Ending Ceremony
was held in the Flower Field Hall of the
Garden by the Bay. Representatives

from all the countries expressed their

diverse culture through their dancing
and singing which captivated the
entire audience. At the end of the
conference, we not only left with an
amazing experience but also with
lifelong friends and memories which
we will cherish throughout our life. So
if I am asked whether I want to
participate in the upcoming
conference, the answer will be
undoubtedly a Yes.
