GREAT TEACHER INSPIRES

Many believes that a teacher is someone who makes their students excel academically
and do ace their examinations. But I believe that is half-right, and a little off. A great teacher
doesnt have only one dimension but two. They not only make you excel in the academe, but also
they make you want to go to school and make your learning experience worthwhile. They care
about the students insecurities and problems, and most importantly they are always there to
support them.
A Science teacher in Ternate National High School for almost four years; earned her
bachelors degree in Physics at Philippine Normal University - Manila and cross enrolled added
Education units at De La Salle University Manila; Mrs. Jerica Oledan-Rellorta is one of those
teachers who believed that teaching is not just confined in the idea of imparting information theres more to teaching than that.
Its really true that as a teacher you should not teach by book, but rather teach by heart.
Mas natatandaan kasi ng mga bata ang mga bagay na may kinalaman sa buhay, karanasan at
pagkatao nila. she said as she agrees that learning is meaningful when it is connected to
students everyday life. Abstract concepts are made understandable for students when a teacher
provides sufficient examples relating to the students interest and experiences. Based on my
observation, my students easily recall practical examples and applications more than words and
definitions. she added.
Teachers maybe efficient or effective according to her. Efficient teachers are those who
are fountain of knowledge, great in teaching methods and planning, and those who mastered the
subject matter very well, but they failed to
capture the interest of the students. The result
is that students are not engaged with the
learning process. The other one is the
efficient teacher, they use simple strategies,
they teach essential topics but they are
successful in captivating learners interest.
This would result to positive learning
outcome.
She always starts her class with a
game or activity to gain the attention of her

students as she emphasizes the

importance of motivation as a good
teaching strategy. She explained that, A
teacher must first tap the interest of the
students to gain their attention, it will
motivate them to listen and grasp the
topic. As well, it will kill boredom
especially for some topics that students
find mind-numbing. She uses multiple
representation of knowledge in problem
solving, it includes pictorial, verbal,
graphical and diagram representation.
Students are highly visual, they can
easily understand concepts that is represented by visual aids. Teachers should be effective in
making instructional materials she said. She also highlighted the significance of assessment in
the process. According to her assessment should be regularly done before and after instruction to
see if you fell short or you just hit your objectives. Assessments should not be a form of
punishment because it will instil negative perception about assessments in students mind. Hindi
dahil maingay sila or magulo, magpapa-quiz ka na. Teachers must always know the right time
and situation to give an assessment. If you will give it as punishment, it will be a negative
experience for the students. she added. (Other parts of the process are Analysis, Abstraction
and Agreement). There is no such thing as best or ultimate teaching strategy or method according
to her. The best method is on that works, the one that yields the positive results. Each learner is
unique thats why there is no such thing as prototype teaching. As a good teacher you should
address individual differences using variety of teaching strategies that is always student-oriented.
Problems inside the classroom are inevitable, the way a teacher manages a classroom is
very crucial. First day of classes, I will set my rules. I always remind them with it. And then I
will let my students voice-out their objections if there are rules that they wanted to change. I let
them make some of the rules to be fair. she verbalized. She is not the nagger type of teacher that
screams and shouts when angry. She said that when her students are noisy and unsettled, she just
stop talking and make a serious face, then students will notice that shes not happy with their
behavior so they will behave well in class. When it comes to a point that shes already mad or
pushed to her limits, she just go to her desk and breathe for 3 minutes and then go back to
teaching. It my responsibility to set aside my emotions from my work, I cant leave my students
even if Im angry, I should always go with my lesson plan and discuss the topics my student
needed to learn. she explained. She also added that its very important to incorporate the value
of discipline to the teaching method. She explained that students who are disciplined are easily to
manage and self-motivated. Teachers would never find hard time in dealing with disciplined
students.

If I have a student who looks problematic or uneasy with my class, I talk to him after the
period one on one. Most of the students share their problems and all I have to do is to make him
feel that he is not alone and give him the best advice I can give. Hanggang payo lang talaga.
Especially when dealing with students family problem, mahirap makialam sa ganon. she
exclaimed. Teachers are counsellors, they deal with the problems of their students. It is their
responsibility to listen to their issues and hardships, and provide them an appropriate advice. If
his problem is about a conflict with his classmate, I will be the mediator to let them talk about it
and reconcile their issues. she added. As well, she do home visit when a student is consistently
and consecutively having absences in her class. She is eager to find the reason of her students
absence and try to provide the best solution or help she can give.
Teachers also deals with personal and professional problems and challenges throughout
their practice. Most common issues are being disgraced or not married although having a child;
and being involved to molestation or harassment issues. In line with this having an ethical and
moral standards is very much needed in teaching profession. Teachers are just human, we also
commit mistakes. My stand on that emerging issues is that teachers must always reflect and look
back to our oath. We should always walk and talk the moral and ethical standards made by the
people and by the law. We are role models not only for our students but for the whole society, so
being well-mannered and decent is essential and must be always practiced. she explained. I
myself experienced being pregnant at early age, I was a neophyte then in the profession, even
though my boyfriend and I still have no plan for marriage, we decided to marry each other for
the sake of following the ethical standards of being a teacher. We did it because we need to. And
I have no regrets. Lyra (her daughter) is two years old now. she added.

The most challenging experience I have encounter in my practice is that when I started
to teach here (Ternate National High School). It took me so long to adjust with the whole school,
my co-teachers, my students, and the environment. I tried to adapt to them that I copy the
strategies and techniques of my co teachers. It worked for a while, yes. But in the long run, Im
the one who got tired if imitating what
other teachers are doing. So I tried doing it
my way. I learned that I have to be myself
because youll be meeting them every day
and its very hard to be somebody else. I
learned to hone and polish my own
teaching skills and develop my own
strategy. she exclaimed. Being a teacher
is a personal challenge, you will be
imparting not only your knowledge to
your students but also your whole
personality and humanhood. It is very
important that instead of just copying the techniques of others, one must develop his own.
Students will learn from a teacher that is being himself, than a teacher that is trying to be
someone he is not.
The best part of being a teacher is the privilege to inspire your students and change their
lives. She religiously believe that the mediocre teacher tells, the good teacher explains, the
superior teacher demonstrate, the great teacher inspires. Mrs. Rellorta is a former DOST scholar,
shes the only DOST scholar from ternate before. When she started to teach in TNHS, everyone
has no idea about it. With regards to this, she dreamed to produce DOST scholars every year and
to achieve it, she offers free review classes for potential students who wanted to enter the
program (DOST Scholarship). I handle 15 to 20 potential fourth year students and prepare them
for the admission test for DOST Scholarship. Its my way to pay forward for all the good things
happened to my life. Gladly, I have one student each year who successfully entered the program,
and for me that is the most rewarding experience I can ever ha as a teacher. Im hoping that every
year, that one will be two, then three, then as many as possible. As a teacher I wanted to inspire
them and change their lives forever. she verbalized.
With all this narration, it is very apparent that Mrs. Rellorta is the repertoire of a good
teacher. She keeps her class in order and gave importance to the value of discipline, yet manages
to make it fun and motivating at the same time. Shes always there for her students to provide
academic as well as personal help. She is an efficient teacher, she engages her students to the
learning process. She opted to follow the ethical and moral standards of teaching profession.
What made her great is her advocacy of inspiring young minds, hone them, and change
their lives. It is her dream to pay forward and give back to her hometown by producing (DOST)

scholars like her that will eventually be somebody, may be a doctor, nurse, engineer or a teacher,
someday. It is her passion and advocacy that made her a living example of why being a teacher is
a noble profession.
